Everybody here said the same thing last offseason, after Abraham made the same comments a year ago, the guy just wants a long term deal. It amazes me how fans still live in this world as if these guys play primarily for the love of the game, there's no such thing as loyalty with these young guys. Money will solve all his problems, and his play of the field will make you forget em.
If I remeber correctly - Abraham didn't even have the class to make any direct comments. All I've heard is through the grapevine, junior high rumors about how he doesn't want to be here. Let the bidding begin - get me another 1st rounder Tannenbaum!
He got offered a FAT long term deal and turned it down. He's just plain old greedy. I hope he enjoys busting some teams cap so that they can't afford to put together a winner.
I really hope we can hang on to him, but if we cant I'd take the Lions 9th pick, but not if it means giving up our 3rd rounder. Keep the guy here, we have the money!
Money fixes bridges. If we don't keep him we have to replace him, how long will that take and how much will it cost? I say sign him. PS--Go Devils!
From JA perspective, he has ONE shot at a long term deal after his initial contract runs out. If he signs a shitty 3 or 4 year deal now, he will be in his 30's the next time he hits the open market. Look at what Mawai is facing because his age starts with the number 3. It's now or never. Question: I remember when we drafted JA there was some other team that had him as their "marked player" and we totatlly distroyed the other teams draft by taking him. What was the "other team"? I can't remember. They drafted right after us and they were shocked when we took both Ellis first and then JA.
Ive had it w/ all the headaches he has caused. No player is worth all the crap he has put this team through w/ disruptions, injuries and inconsistency. He is a great player 50% of the time, and when he is, he's an asset. But if ever there was a time to move on, now is it. We are starting completely over. Let's get what we can for him and move on.
I also think we should keep him but I'm also pretty sure that he will be gone by Monday at the latest. FA starts on Saturday and by the end of the weekend, he will be traded away to the highest bidder. Just adds another whole to our needs. I have the team needing(if Abe Goes) a DE, DT, CB, FS, C, OT, OG, RB, TE, and possibly a WR/QB. Too many needs to fill in one FA/Draft class, keeping Abe takes off one of those needs!
Same goes for the negative words around here concerning Mawae. Lets get the story straight guys...he was cut by the Jets. As far as Abe goes, there hasnt been a happy franchised guy since Ronald McDonald. If it were the case of loyalty and not money...you would see 3 or 4 guys filing for free agency every year. If we want to talk football...and that Abe wouldnt fit well with a 3-4...that sounds right on to me. Blasting Abe for being selfish? If memory serves me correctly, he was the best Jet on the field last year...including Vilma. Abe will go to the next team...be one of the leaders with sacks...a guy teams have to actually design a gameplan around. Which other current Jets do teams have to actually gamplan around on todays roster.
Yes, thats true...it was the same "FAT long term deal" that Ellis signed...correct? Remember...all the threads and posts around here how Ellis was the loyal Jet for signing that contract? Wonder if we all had our choice, who would you want to hold onto now? Who will probably get us a first round pick...and who wouldnt. If Ellis had the same demand as Abe...Ellis would be a goner.
I agree he is a "proven" pass rusher and they are hard to find. He is not a complete player like Ellis. Thats why he wont get the money Ellis did. ABE is to Burgess as Ellis is to Strahan. We can find another passrusher, either through sceem or through FA or the Draft. We have so many options, why would we want to pay a guy HUGE $$. a guy that doesnt want to be hear, a guy that cant stay healthy, and a guy that cant stop the run? Think of the ABE situation as running a business. As the business owner would you want a sales rep who puts up big numbers every year, but is a cancer in the office and a guy the accounts cant stand. He will never be a leader and is one demensional. Now dnt get me wrong, that one demesion is veru important but knowbody is bigger than the whole, especcialy a ME firt guy that is one demesional!
There aren't too many people talking sense in this thread, and sadly, one of them is a Fin's fan. In case no one took the time to notice, which I can tell by the contents of these posts, JAbe said he felt disrespected by the Jets, TO HIS FRIENDS, who turned around and leaked it to the media. The reason for his comments? Let's see. Roll the clock back to a year ago. The Jets made a decent, not great, but decent, offer to JAbe. As is usual in a negotiations process, he turned it down, knowing he deserved more. Instead of the Jets returning with something of susbstance, they offered Ellis a contract he never truly earned. Strike one Jets. So the Jets, realizing that it was still in their best interests to keep Abe, slapped him with the franchise tag. If you have ever seen a player get up on t.v. and say "Hey, I feel lucky to be so valued that I am the franchise player this year." you aren't watching the NFL. Strike two Jets. So the Jets tell Abe, "Look, we appreciate you wanting a fair contract for your talent, but you have to prove to us you can play a full season injury-free. Then, and only then, will we offer you the large long-term deal you so desire." So instead of bitching, Abe went and got himself a personal trainer who specializes in conditioning. He worked all off-season to prepare his body. He came into camp in the best shape of his career. He started the first game of the season, with no pre-season work. He played every game after that, and started each and every one. He pulled a hammy in (if I remember correctly) week 3. Did he sit? Nope. Did he even complain? Nope. Fast forward to January. The Jets are on their way home after a miserable season where the two brightest stars over the season were Vilma and Abe. Abraham cleans out his locker figuring he is about to make a shitload for his play on this miserable wreck of a team. A few weeks later, Abe learns he is once again the franchise player for the Jets, and he will not be recieving the contract he was ASSURED he would get, IF he met a series of conditions, which he FULFILLED. Strike three Jets. Now I know a lot of guys are sour on Abe for their perception of his desire to play the game. I have posted before how off-base people are with the playoff games he missed from the flu and the knee injury. He was physically unable to play, and would have only hurt the team had he actually tried. Then people would be up his ass for that. This is no excuse to deny Abe has his place here, that he EARNED. We shouldn't even be going to the 3-4 to begin with, since it means we need to figure out where we are getting another LB from, plus figuring out here DRob fits in (he is not a 3-4 NT.) So we lose Abe, one of the best pass-rushing ends in the league, we either lose, or convert Robertson to end, and we spend money on another LB and NT. Sounds like a typical divorce to me, it's cheaper to keep her. If you were Abe, don't you think, given the circumstances, you would bitch to your friends also? If you say no, you are either lying, or you are extremely happy with your job in porn.
Was this even a serious post? Ellis is being compared to MICHEAL STRAHAN??? I don't think so. Actually, no, I KNOW he isn't near the same level. Where was Ellis last year while we were getting spanked? Was he rushing the passer? Was he stopping the run? Complete player? The only thing he was last year was completely invisible. And your sales rep analogy is just plain silly. I have worked with MANY sales reps in my time, and almost every single one of them was an ass. Those are EXACTLY the kinds of guys you want as salespeople, because they know how to blow smoke up people's ass. Just like Abe is the kind of DE you want on your team.
It probably got silent in here because it would be stupid to think the Jets would re-sign Abraham, no matter how much cap room they have.
Why would it be stupid? He hasn't even said he wouldn't play for the Jets. As a matter of fact, the public statements have come from his agents, and they said they didn't feel John would ever play for the Jets again. If they offered him a fair contract, he would be a killer end for us for years to come.
Great post, this is exactly what I've been thinking. He has every right to be unhappy with the Jets. Whether or not I feel we should trade him....well, that's the front office's decision. If he fits into our system, then by all means keep him and rebuild those bridges that were burned. If the feel he can't, then whatever....get that 9th pick or whatever for him and a 3rd rounder.
Some of you are nothing but jokes. All we been hearing this off season is how Abe has to go now you guys want to keep him.
Coming from the Jokemaster himself, maybe that is a back-handed compliment. JWWS has long held a desire to keep Abe on the team. He actually had quite a bit of support, but over the last couple of years it has eroded. I loved the guy when we got him, but he has to stay healthy consistently, and there is a big rift it appears between him and the organization. Pretty sure his days are numbered.
