Jerry Jones has done his best to ruin that franchise single-handedly. I wouldn't use his opinion as a point of validation.
I don't think it's as audacious an idea as some people are making it out to be, but I'd have to say that most defensive formations are called on the fly, after the offensive huddle is set. Therefore, you want the defensive captain to be in constant unison with the defensive coordinator, and by DC I mean the guy running the practices and meetings all week. If the head coach were running the practices and meetings, he'd be forsaking the rest of the team. I guess it really depends on what the role of a good head coach needs to be. Personally, I feel like great head coaches only need to do two things: 1) They hire the right people. 2) They inspire their people. Sounds much simpler than it really is, but if you do those two things very well and don't spooge your timeouts, you'd have a solid coach.
There were articles posted a few weeks ago saying Ryan would in fact be calling the defense. edit: found an article http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2009/01/new_york_jets_coach_rex_ryan_w.html
the cowboys are the new raiders.... but are going to tease you with playoff contention. Jones is the reason why that team is slowly becoming irrelevant in that division.
There is a difference between predicting something the Jets do and portraying things that the Jets do as 'making football sense'.
the making football sense post wasn't bad. the post before calling the guy out for even suggesting this was unnecessary. maybe i should have just quoted that one instead.
I get the point. It's not outlandish to have a HC who is a defense junkie like Belichick or Buddy Ryan calling his own defense with the 'title' DC up in the booth strategizing. I just hope Rex is capable of balancing the DC and HC responsibilities. Hell, maybe this is the best way to go about it.
