Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere, feel free to delete this if it has. Interesting stuff, including why we passed on Mahomes after we brought him to Florham Park for a workout! It highlights why I hate having a GM telling a Head Coach who he has to work with. https://www.espn.com/blog/new-york-...needy-jets-passed-on-drafting-patrick-mahomes
"In the end, Trubisky was the highest rated of the three top quarterbacks on the Jets' board." And there you have it. A team desperately in need of a QB took a safety because Mac didn't want to give up on Hack. Heartbreaking - but we would've ruined Mahomes, remember that. He wouldn't have sat a year for us, he would've been thrown right in. If there's one thing we really know how to do, it's ruin talent.
Because we have stupid owners n a studier GM that is the fact so it is time for NYJ fans ti grasp that fact
Not for nothing, but Trubisky and Deshaun Watson were ranked on almost every single board higher than Mahomes. Hindisght is 20/20, but the Jets were not the only ones that had him lower than Trubiskt or Watson. Most did
And imagine if you are a Bills fan LOL They traded with Kansas City to move out of the #10 spot. Yikes They took Allen with the 2018 pick they traded for, but that is a FAR cry from Mahomes
no disagreement that a lot of teams had Trubisky rated higher and i recall that Macganan wanted Mitch but we couldn't trade up -- phew the thing that troubles me is that by all accounts we already has serious, serious questions about Hackenberg so we shouldve drafted one of Watson or Mahome or in theory could have even traded back a few and still nabbed one the real moral of the story though it KC. they played that perfectly and i suspect knew they could make him into a great QB (can't say they knew he would be MVP but still). When KC trades up everyone sits up and says uh-oh who did we miss, especially so when it's a skill position player. I feel the same way about Pittsburg when they draft a LB or WR, and just about anyone from the Saints
Congratulations. KC landed a Franchise QB and looks to be another generational talent and ended up winning their first SB dating back to the 1960's... Even more reason for us to celebrate as fans if we're to land Trevor Lawrence ala the greatest ACC QB of All Time (sorry Marino/Watson) and a much higher rated prospect coming out in comparison to Watson and especially Mahomes. However, let's not act and pretend that our Jets were the only team to pass on Mahomes... CLE took a DE #1 overall. CHI took a bust QB Mitch #2 overall. 49ers took a DE #3 overall. Jax took a RB #4 overall. Ten took a WR bust #5 overall. SD took a WR #7 overall. CAR took a RB #8 overall. CIN took a WR #9 overall. Etc. Etc. All of these teams passed on both Watson and Mahomes "not just the Jets".
Shows what a crap shoot the draft really is. If the Football Gods though Trubisky was better than Mahomes, how much faith do you have in them saying Trevor is better than Sam?
Trubisky was gone, we could have had Mahomes at #6. Hackenberg....OMG......his #1 and #2 picks.....thanks for nothing, Charlie Casserly and Ron Wolf.
Yeah I know Trubisky was gone, but it is telling that the Jets organisation (and many others from the sound of it) thought he was the top talent. I get that other teams made the same mistake, but when you look at how they compared in the pros - Trubisky and Mahomes, even Trubisky and Watson - you have to wonder how these players are assessed. It's not like it's close. How do you miss a bust? How do you miss maybe the best quarterback in the game right now? Just because everyone else is getting it wrong too is no comfort at all.
Because it is also dependent on the situation they are drafted in. KC had already had Super bowl caliber roster do you think Mahomes would have been what he is today on the Jets?
He wouldn't be rated as the NFLs 32nd, dead last and worst QB and that's for sure. Patrick Mahomes understands how to read NFL defense's and Sam, doesn't and that's the biggest difference. Mahomes also has a rocket cannon arm and Sam Darnold, doesn't. Yes. Patrick Mahomes would've turned a deep ball threat and speed burner into an absolute NFL Superstar in Robby Anderson because unfortunately, Sam lacked the arm strength needed in order to utilize Robby's talents. Sam was a converted HS Linebacker. He still to this day doesn't understand how to communicate with his O-Lineman with protection and that's because he doesn't understand how to read NFL defenses pre snap and after the hike he's even more confused and absolutely lost. Beachum: Starting LT for Murray and the winning Cards. Winters: Starting Guard for Allen and the winning Bills. Shell: Starting RT for Wilson and the winning Seahawks. Robby: Top 10 WR for Teddy. Yes. Mahomes would look 10x better than Sam has and why? Because Sam is nothing more than another USC NFL bust who makes all of his teammates look worse than they really are.
