We absolutely do not need a safety. I think everyone needs to relax and have a little faith in Rex Ryan. Just because he had Ed Reed in Baltimore doesnt mean it's a necessary part of his defense to have a stud safety. In Balt, he had decent corners so he needed the safety to do more. Here we have excellent corners, so we need much less from our safeties. Rex really seems to be high on Brodney Pool. We have Eric Smith who started a bunch of games last year and did fine. We have Ihedigbo who started to work his way onto the field more and more last year. Plus we have Lowery and maybe this Warren kid as extra dbacks who can possibly play a safety hybrid role. If we can end up bringing in a Darren Sharper in July, I'm all for it. But if it doesnt happen, I think we are fine.
Man, Mambo seems angry today. BTW, if you're going to bold Pool to make a point about proper spelling of his name, you might want to spell Peyton correctly.
I do? I'm absolutely calm I highlighted the keywords in each sentence for people who didn't want to read the whole thing... Thanks for the Peyton thing... I always thought his name was Payton -.-"... error fixed!
If we sign Sharper we would have a defense capable of being historically good and almost guarantee a superbowl appearance. I suppose we don't NEED a FS, but I sure would love to have Sharper.
Exactly. We don't NEED a safety. We could go to the season with the roster we have now and we'd be in good shape. But safety is a position we don't have an impact player. We have quality players who have different strengths Rex can use, but we don't have a star like Reed or Polamalu who would take our defense to a whole new level. If Sharper can play like he did last year, he could be that guy, and how could you not want to bring that on board? But if not, I'm fine with the trio we have. The Jets had the #1 defense in the NFL last season. If Pool can adequately replace Rhodes, and unless he gets hurt for an extended period of time, there's no reason he shouldn't, then we could be the #1 defense again.
On ESPN, they were saying that his injury is a bit more serious than teams originally thought. While this is pure speculation on my part, I think this could bode very well for us. Given his injury, fewer teams will be willing to sign him to a lucrative deal. Hopefully, NO also is anxious about this. Along with possibly moving Malcolm Jenkins to FS and Sharper likely expressing his desire to NOT be a backup, they may choose not to tender him. Then, on July 22, he may very well be available. And we could maybe afford to make him an offer because we already have a solid rotation; even if he can't come through, we'd still be fine, so we could gamble on him a bit. And he's expressed/implied a desire to play here recently. And if he does get back to 100%, then our defense would be scary good. Imagine the nickel package: Sharper Leonhard Revis Wilson Cromartie Harris Scott Pace Taylor Jenkins Ellis
