Mahomes had mechanical and footwork problems coming out of college which Wilson doesn’t have. Mohames needed that year to polish his game.
Hey all, I'm a BYU/Wilson fan, and therefore now a Jets fan. Go Jets! IMHO, the right move here is to stack the deck in Wilson's favor by announcing him the starter now (establish him as leader), giving him the first team reps, and give him as much playing time as possible in the pre-season to bring him along as fast as possible. As we get closer to the season, if Zach doesn't appear to be on track, bring in a vet then. In that scenario, the Jets probably lose a couple games because they waited long enough that it's slim pickins for vets and because whomever they bring in didn't have time to get used to the playbook. That's not the end of the world -- it's not like the Jets have any chance at the SuperBowl this year anyway. On the other hand, if Zach does look ready and the Jets can start him game 1, then he has benefited from all the extra reps and leadership opportunities, and the extra $10M that we would have spent on a vet QB can be used to upgrade TE/RG/DB should the opportunity arise. We'll see in a couple months whether it is a brilliant strategy or a stupid strategy.
Welcome to TGG! Did you post in the "Introduce Yourself" thread yet? The Jets are going to follow the script you described because Zach is absolutely their best option. If this were last year, with Gase as HC and the talent they had then, I would scream bloody murder if they even considered playing Wilson at all during the season, except for maybe a mop up game at the end. Although Zach is way better than Sam, and maybe he wouldn't have been completely ruined, his growth would've been stunted, and he would've been at high risk for serious injury on that team. But this year, with a new - and competent - CS, and way more talent - even if a lot of it is raw and unproven - the right move is play Zach from the beginning.
It was hard to get past “having a solid core” in 2018. Our OL consisted of late round picks and older under-performers.
Allen backed up Peterman for 2 quarters Watson backed up Peterman for 2 quarter Baker backed up Tyrod for 2 games. Herbert backed up Tyron for 1 game. The record of them as backups is 0-4-1 I question how much experience these kids got in being backups for 1,1,2, and 1 game. Jackson, just like Mahomes had mechanical issues he needed to develop
I’d be willing to Trade a 6th for Foles. The cost would be low and he can sit behind Wilson and learn the offense.
People would still remember that he described Smith as a cross between two of the greatest WR's ever seen in Moss and Rice earlier. Pass me some of that stupid he was throwing around earlier.
I second the welcome! I'm so excited about the Jets getting Wilson! I think he has a ton of potential and is going to be a very, very good QB for us for the next 10-15 years.
I'd go with Vinny in '98. 13-1 and to the AFC Championship Game. Note that Bill Parcells liked his boy Glenn Foley but he had a good vet on hand just in case.
I agree he is the unqualified starter day zero. However, I think they will do with Wilson what they normally do with the starter in preseason, maybe a quarter for the first two games and then a half or a little less in the last game. I don't think they want to risk an injury playing him in games that tend to devolve into chaos at times with lesser players trying to make a roster. The remainder of those games will be for looking at second and third teamers.
