I think in retrospect it's pretty obvious that the Jets resources are more constrained now than they were in the '08-'11 time span.

The Jets made a lot of contractual concessions to free up cap space last year and maybe even some in '10 that I don't recall right away. They signed a lot of high-ticket free agents in '08 and '09. The cap is a limiting factor and the Jets have been rolling the cap issues over from year to year until this season where we're finally up against it. Next year is likely to be even worse.

The other limiting factor is cash. Woody put a lot of cash into this team between '08 and '10. The Jets signed a bunch of veteran free agents to top value contracts. They traded for several other vets with big salary figures. They re-signed their own core guys at great expense.

I would not be surprised if Woody laid out $150 million in new salaries over the last 3 years. That amount over the existing salary structure of those teams at the time. That's a lot of cash.

When you throw a lot of cash at players it has an effect on the cap over time. You have to start paying for your bad decisions by renegotiating the players from a management point of weakness, since the players are a huge cap cost to cut and so the restructuring tends to just throw the cap hits down the seasons until you eventually have to pay for them.

Yeah, good post. I buy that. So when in the breaking point? When would you pull the plug on Sanchez or Rex or Tannenbaum?

Based on Woody history I'd say whenever someone more sexy becomes available. Woody would fall over himself to sign Cowher or Holmgren.

IMO this is the test. Rex is facing adversity so lets see how he responds. I am not sure the final decision of Rex has as much to do with what our final record as what the attitude and motivations of the team are at the end.

If Rex pulls this ship together – even while going 6-10 I’d say let’s keep him. He is learning this season also. But if things just blow up and spiral even further out of control then maybe it’s time for him to go.

Sanchez should be benched as soon as we get a replacement. Stop considering Sanchez our undisputed starter. Please stop this. At the end of this season Mark will officially be a journeymen QB. A career backup to any decent QB (or a starter for some other desperate team).

I don’t know about Tanny. I thought he was OK in the beginning but now it seems he has at least half of Woody’s brain in his head. That’s not good, but since Woody is the owner maybe that what he expects – which means no matter who we bring in they will have to think the same way.

Woody is our biggest problem. Great NFL minds don’t want to work for him. Especially coaches. Herm , Mangini, Rex – why do you think that since Tuna left we always hire a first year HC…because none of the experienced coaches will work for Woody. That’s a killer to our club right there.

Unfortunately, I don't think we can fire Woody. :)

Sanchez is competent as long as everything is sunshine and rainbows. Once things begin to go south he demonstrates no mettle to restore faith in himself or the offense. Instead of looking pissed off or determined he looks like he is sulking.

I can't stand John Elway but he is a way better judge of quarterbacks than Woody Johnson could ever hope to be. Tebow is nothing but a PSL poster boy for Woody. Tebow has the ability to be a very good player but not at quarterback.

Rex has shown that his main strength as a head coach is lip service. He lacks command and control of both coaches and players alike. Very good DC, lousy head coach.

Tannenbaum thinks he is a lot smarter than he actually is, definitely a lower tier general manager. He has little understanding of how things interact within a team. He has failed at depth of position, development, cohesion, salaries and cap management.

Woody Johnson has demonstrated that the battle for him exists on the back page and not on the field. I'm sure those at Johnson and Johnson are happy he has nothing to do with their company. His passion is for his ego not football and fails to realize that the benefits of a championship would bring in much more money than the buffoonery that is currently displayed.

^- I feel that way about Rex & Tanny. I knew from the start Rex would be green as a HC but was hoping he would develop. Funny thing is he is like Sanchez in that regard.
True, I didn't think about that.

BR4DW,,,,I hear you but no I have to say WE ARE NOT totally up against it cap wise.... we were around $ 8 million under it as of 2 weeks ago and as of 3 monts ago yet we sat with no depth on the off line and we sat with WFH on this team ! To make matters worse Tanny gave him a raise and guaranteed him,,simply amazing in itself but if what you said is true that we were " up against it cap wise " why would you give WFH anything besides walking papers let alone a raise first ? We signed a kicker the week before the season,,,simply amazing ! I like so many others of you am so fed up and disappointed,,I mean even when healthy before the injuries we looked bad,,,even in preseason we were sold a lemon telling us that the offence was under wraps and that the Tebow packages " would keep opposing defensive coordinators up at nite " what baloney!
I feel bad for Sanchez , he has not stepped up but then again in all fairness look at these freaking WR s that Tanny expects him to succeed with ? It is just a trainwreck and I hope and pray that these guys prove me wrong and turn this mess around but I just cant see it. IF they win a few games it only buys some time and puts off blowing it up,,,,,I think Monday we need another miracle as the Texans are excellent on both sides of the ball and I see another ass kicking in our future,,,sorry about the rant guys I am just so disgusted / disappointed !

It doesnt matter how Rex responds,he isn't the one playing on Sundays, our players get paid millions of dollars to look stupid everyweek. Rex can only do and say so much but with little talent on the field it doesn't matter what he says

i can completely agree with this. it also makes a case for getting rid of a bunch of players, at high cap prices, in addition to the entire front office and 3 assistant coaches.( qb, oc, and lb).

tebow can not succeed given his current passing ability. you have to completely change the offense, like denver did, in order to have a chance. sanchez has already proven that he is NOT the answer. that's why some people, peter king also, have said that mcelroy should start. he can play in the curent offense, with tebow playing entire series in the wildcat a few times per game.

changes need to be made yesterday to prepare for what needs to be done this offseason.

My biggest gripe is with Tannenbaum. He has made some awful decisions lately. Sanchez absolutely has to play better and Rex still has to sharpen up as a head coach. However, I don't want any of them gone yet. I give Tannenbaum and Rex another year barring a 5 win season. Sanchez, time will tell, week by week if he should be starting next year.

As long as the owner interferes with the decision making regarding players (Favre, Tebow, Sanchez etc) there is no chance to build a consistent winner. Rex and Tanny are just his puppets. Tanny knows it but unfortunately Rex doesn't.

Why do you think Tanny knows it and Rex doesn't?

And I don't think Sanchez was a Woody move. It was a "we need a QB" move and our friend Mangini will help us make a trade
