I dont think this Team are the "worst" at all if you start at Williams Defense for example and then also see how we went 6-2 the back end of 2019 Then on Offense (skill positions): no we dont have anyone thats All Pro but I wouldnt lump Sam D , J Crowder, Griffin, Herndon and formerly RA (replaced by Perriman) as worst in the League (neither are they the best but certainly average). Plus, we made important upgrades at punter, WR, CB, RB and possibly edge And no, not every team is giddy about how they did in the draft..look at the Packer fans who hate the job LaFleur and their GM did
I think the media talking heads and even the fan base has been conditioned over the years by ineffective GMs that liked to double up on positions of need. Idzik did it with WRs, Macc did it with DL and S. I like that JD didn't try to force it, which gives me hope for the future. And maybe he'll find another diamond in the rough via UDFA, XFL, CFL, WNBA, etc.
The defense is fine - Greg Williams is good enough to get by with a little. And the Jets have the worst offensive skill players - across all 32 teams. Look at every depth chart and tell me one team you would take over the jets.
All Pros? We would barely have any All Division guys at the skill positions as of right now. I really hope this offense is more "explosive" this year. It has to get better. But as currently constructed the Jets skill position talent would still rank in the bottom 10 in the league so I don't think it's quite average. Maybe they exceed those expectations this year.
We have a pretty good defense that will keep us in games.. But I get what you guys are saying >>>you want to see to see the Ws before you buy in Listen, I see 7 losses next Season for us: Both LA teams Seattle San Fran KC and probably a loss within our division. But all the rest ,given our upgrades , are very winnable including NE
I see 9 losses next season. I don't think there's any way we go 5-1 in our division. 3-3 seems much more likely. Either way I agree that our roster is more talented so I guess we'll see how it plays out.
for posterity sake, may i suggest that people name names. Which WR should we have taken instead of whoever we drafted? We can revisit in a year or two and see who has the gift of foresight
Devil's Advocate: We could've taken Lamb or Jeudy in round 1 and Josh Jones or Ezra Cleveland in round 2. Then go Bryan Edwards in the 3rd. Not saying we should've done this, but it's a way we could've gotten 2 WR's and a high upside but raw OT prospect.
Remember this rebuilding job isn’t going to be done in one offseason. JD got off to a good start this year but there is more to be done. As far as skill positions I can see him continuing to build next offseason - he’s going to have to find a new #1 RB for starters - and another WR to go with Mims. I imagine a #1 EDGE guy would also be at the top of the list as Zuniga maybe be more of a complimentary piece if he works out.
Joe already burnt his 1st overall on LT, and his 2nd round pick on WR. But the time he got to the 3rd round and later, there were other needs to address.
Some stats for regular season receiving yard rankings for Super Bowl winning teams (WR only) over the past 10 years Only three teams had WRs in the top 10 - Broncos (#7), Giants (#3), Packers (#4) On average, the top ranked WR was #18 On average, the second ranked WR was #32 Average ranking spread between #1 & #2 WR was 14. Largest was Packers (41) followed by Patriots of 4 years ago (38). The top two receivers were within 10 ranking spots in 6 of the 10 years and within 15 ranking spots in 8 of 10 years. Last 4 years the #2 receiver was ranked 45, 37, 33, 50 (50 was the lowest overall). Obviously teams like KC, NE, and PHI had very strong TEs to help with the receiving load. What's the point? Having an elite top 5 receiver isn't 100% necessary to win a SB. Very few teams actually win with one. In fact, the last time a team won with a guy who was top 5 in receiving yards was 9 years ago. It's more important to have two above average options who are in a relatively similar skill bracket than to have a single big time dominant guy.
Great post i suspect the stats are slanted from NE alone. Teams are better off with 4 good WR than one stud and 3 less than good WR. Need to spread the ball around WRs are sexy but are they worth it
I'll take the players we got over that. Stepping back and looking at a bigger picture, Douglas has a plan, a plan which includes dealing with Adams and Maye and their upcoming negotiations, among other things. It wasn't just about drafting in a vacuum, and which players in this draft class were better. Taking Becton first was the right move, and while I'm not a big fan of Mims, he has elite ability for sure, and being able to get him plus another 3rd rounder was the right thing to do with a team that has so many holes. If you agree that trading back to get an additional pick was better than taking whichever WR was still there at 48, then who would you have taken rather than Mims?
Bra ur acting like JoeD passed on Jerry Rice to take a flyer on Ryan Leaf. LOL He didn't. Pop an extra Midol and go watch some baby goat vids. U'll feel better. Jets will be fine.
The idea is to bring in great players that fit team identity at every single position at every opportunity. In WR’s case you need dynamic playmakers in this modern game.Guys who compliment one another almost like a basketball starting 5 who can win different match ups. While a stud WR is not mandatory its not something a team should ever shy away from either. In the Jets case it’s not so much that certain fans think the team needs a stud WR, but rather the team has falled & neglected the position in the draft for so long that taking a blue chipper in round 1 w minimized risk is a logical way to stop the bleeding.
A stud at every position would be wonderful. Unfortunately, you only have one first round pick and certain positions require more attention than others. Point is that it's better to have eilite OLs and a solid/balanced group of WRs vs an average OL with elite WRs. We've seen some of the best WRs in recent years win nothing repeatedly. Top 5 WR is a luxury, top 5 offensive linemen are more of a necessity. Douglas made the right choice going OL in the first, as long as he pans out.
But taking OL doesnt change the fact that its still a bottom of the barrel WR group for yet another season. In fact we’ve seen plenty of elite level OL around here w nowhere close to elite level skilll or playmakers & it held us back. Im not here to argue OL importance or how to use picks.I just dont understand the continued need to downplay having quality WR or worse yet continued acceptance of dreadful talent at the positions that actually score points.
As much as I respect your ability to evaluate talent, as well as the amount of time you invest in it, I have to disagree that the current roster of receivers is "bottom of the barrel". I think they're definitely, markedly, better than last year's group - although that's a low bar for sure. I think a lot of their success hinges on what Gase will do, and whether he can actually design an offense that utilizes his player's strengths, a trick he has so far not done.
