I agree as well, it was a huge wake-up call but what is worse is the number of teammates suggesting he was on the way to being a great, Perriman saying he was a man with a lovely touch etc Not evident on Sunday in the slightest.
The very idea that we’d be willing to trade him kinda tanks his trade value, right? It would indicate that we’ve given up on him, and failed Jets QB’s don’t exactly have a good track record in the NFL. Pennington had a bit of success with the Phins, but outside of him..
Bell was brought in to help put the pressure off of Darnold. But unfortunately We can’t get the running game going and never did last year. OL continues to be an issue. Ok new OL and need time to gel, fine, let’s give the team another 3-4 games to see if they start to improve. Darnold has to step up, knows What Gase’s plays are. Darnold went in like a rookie QB vs the Bills. He looked rattled from the start. Credit the Bills defense, but he couldn’t even move the chains. Does he have supporting casts? Who knows. But he didn’t show any leadership or maturity Sunday. That has to change. Geno was better in that regards...
So the goalposts are still movable, got it. I agree with you. This is starting to be on Sam because it's a recurring theme. Why after 5 years of a recurring theme is Gase still not a piss poor coach who deserves every bit of criticism he receives?
I'm sure the large number of drops at the beginning of the game did not give him confidence in throwing to certain guys. (Perriman)
I agree he needs to step up now.... but take a look at the evaluation of the new oline: The Jets allowed a pressure rate of 44.7 percent in Week 1 – the highest of any team on Sunday, according to NextGen Stats. Darnold was sacked three times, was constantly flushed out of the pocket and was knocked down four times. The Jets also couldn’t gain any leverage on the ground. The running game finished with just 52 yards on 16 carries and no touchdowns – the worst performance in the Gase era since Week 8 of 2019 when the Jets rushed for just 46 yards on 14 carries. translation no play action so they can load the zones and play a quasi - man zone which is what they did.... Did you see the middle of the line cave, did you see george F get push back into Sam quite a few times. Did you see Lewis get beat and Van whatever his name is getting manhandled... Facts: what about setting the QB up with quick throws to get a rhythm ...has AG ever done that - ans NO. Does this team have a running game - ans NO. Does this team have average NFL WR - NO. he should have been benched but wasn't. The game was over at 21-0...
Darnold was bad. What is strange is that he always plays better in the hurry-up 2 min offense, even when he is bad and that was yet again the case. Maybe they should try that the whole game and let him improvise more often
Gase wants him to be a statue and play in a system that was tailored for a 15+ year vet who called his own plays at the line. How did they think that this would go ?
I’m starting to think that Darnold’s footwork will never be fixed. It seems to be getting worse instead of better every year.
I wonder if 90% of the posters on here have amnesia. The last 8 games of 2019 Sam had 13 TDs / 4 INTs and also ran for 2 scores. He had two QB ratings above 120 and another two above 95 in that span. We also went 6-2 in those games. He seemed to be developing on schedule for a guy with 26 starts. So now he has a bad opening day along with everyone else ... behind a brand new OL, with starting receivers that wouldn't start on any decent team, after no preseason, and he's a bust? Let's relax. I'll wait to see how he looks when we get to Week 6 or 7 before I join the "Tank for Trevor" movement. Some of you guys might want to take a look at Drew Brees' stats after 28 starts in the league with SD. They aren't pretty. In fact ... no question in my mind, on this board we would have been labeled "a bust". This isn't a video game. Give the man some time to develop.
That's a Jets theme. Sanchez had superior footwork when he came into the league...you could almost watch it fall apart game-by-game through his career.
Sure Sam has to take some blame. But that was basically his second worst game of his career. In his third year that does not make sense unless you factor in the environment. What we saw was the rust of an unprepared offense/QB. I'll say with some level of confidence that the offense didn't practice enough reps on the field. What we saw feels like an offense that spent most of their time in a meeting room discussing the offense. Then maybe they went out and had one offense vs defense drive a day. You have to get multiple reps of each play every day to be sharp - especially before opening day. Sam should have been running the offense and throwing constantly for weeks. Instead it feels like they just studied a lot of diagrams and had some easy run throughs on the field. Sam's confusion and accuracy are clear signs of an unprepared QB. By the way, not properly preparing a young QB is one of the main ways to ruin him. If anyone doubts Gase is doing damage to Sam's development they shouldn't. If Sam ends up washing out this season Gase will be a big part of the reason.
To me, it looked extremely sharp his rookie year, and quite awful by the time he left. I suppose "everything else" could include constantly hearing footsteps and short-stepping to stay as far from Wayne Hunter's pass rusher invitational position as possible, though.
