this is his 2nd year, his rookie year he had 872 yards as a starting number 2 WR. Solid numbers for sure. Smith has lost a lot of time because injuries and is a situational WR for us since we have decker and marshall.

We miss at WR because we don't have a great QB. Sometimes you get a good WR without having a great guy throwing to him but it sure helps the young guys if the QB knows what he's doing and is good at doing it.

Every young WR the Giants have drafted has over-achieved at least early in his career. Eli Manning may not be a great QB but he is a great passer for a young WR to catch balls from and he obviously makes young WR's more comfortable in the job and able to achieve earlier in their career.

There are plenty of good WR's drafted after the 1st and even 2nd rounds but if they don't have a great QB they're behind the 8-ball early on. All of that said, we have drafted at least one guy who just wasn't an NFL athlete in Stephen Hill. We pay too much attention to the combine and not enough attention to what the guy actually did in his college career. Devin Smith may be another case like this also although it is not clear yet. If you're not a volume receiver in college and you really only have one or two things you're good at you're going to be living on the razor's edge in the NFL because NFL defenses are really good at taking away one thing and making you prove you can do other things to survive.

Don't forget we passed on Alshon Jeffrey for.....(makes stink face) Stephen Hill

And i would have prefered DGB in the 2nd or Strong in the 3rd this year

But isn't this true of any position? There's nothing special about the WR position that says you need to pick high. You only need to factor in if there will be a run on WRs in a given draft to determine if a given player will be on the board when you want him at a certain draft position. If you want the 3rd rated WR and only one team seems likely to pick a WR in the first round, then it is likely that an early 2nd round pick gets your guy. OTOH, if there are five teams that want WRs then you're not getting him with a 2nd round pick.

So it comes down to getting the best player you can by selecting from as many options as you can before other teams have taken too many of the juicy targets off the board. That is why earlier picks are, on average, better. However, even though the odds of success go down in later rounds, that is all relative for a variety of reasons such as what I've pointed out above.

I just think it's bad scouting. They seem to always swing for the fences with size/speed guys who aren't polished route runners. In what world should Cordarrelle Patterson have been drafted six rounds ahead of Stefon Diggs? Patterson was a one trick pony at Tennessee while Diggs was a four year starter and team captain. Both were great athletes except one was 6'2 and the other was 5'10 with injury history.

Hopefully now that Bradway and his team are gone we will be able to draft better at that position.

Also FYI the best WR we drafted in the last decade was Cotchery in the 4th round

Let's dissect this thing a little. The last time we drafted a WR in the 1st round was FOURTEEN years ago. Santana Moss in 2001. In those 14 years we have drafted only 2 more receivers in the 2nd round. TWO! Stephen Hill was a project/gamble with bum knees and Devin Smith is a rookie. Why do people expect greatness or act like we draft a WR in the 1st or 2nd round each year? When really the Jets never bothered to find those type of guys through the draft? We didn't even pick a lot of receivers late, and some of the few we did turned out great. Cotch was a 4th round pick, Coles was a 3rd round pick, Kerley went in round 5, Enunwa went in round 6, he's becoming a contributor. In 7 out of 14 years / drafts we didn't pick ONE receiver in the entire draft. So that leaves us with Stephen Hill & Devin Smith as our highest picks at the WR position for 14 years. And you're surprised we haven't developed any studs there? You need a QB, a passing game to develop receivers. Rarely do receivers develop and make the QB look better than he is. We haven't had that in the past what, 10 years? So let's stop this myth on the Jets missing on receivers and not being able to develop receivers because that's just not true.
