I for one would like to see referees held accountable when the actually do screw up. As a fan, its comforting to me to know that they actually face accountability for incompetence instead of this aura of infallibility they get from the league protecting them. I remember an XFL referee screwed up a key call. Not only did he face consequences, but the XFL announced to to the fans: I would love it if the NFL did this. Make officials earn their positions through doing a good job, and in parallel reassure fans that poor officiating will not be tolerated.
The XFL isn't as big of a gambling magnet as the NFL is. Admitting mistakes like that would not go over well in Vegas, where untold amounts of money ride on each of these games.
