Maybe a better question - why are they starting Vick now? He's clearly not part of our future, so why not continue to evaluate Geno so we know what to do with him in the offseason? Could Idzik be giving Rex a chance to save his job by helping him win now? Maybe he wants to keep Rex, but feels he needs justification in the standings to do so? Sounds strange, I know, but why else would we be starting Vick, not evaluating our young QBs, and possibly killing our draft position?
I think the evaluation of Geno is complete. Let's move on already and not make another Sanchez mistake, by starting a guy long after he proved he can't play at a competent level. If he turns out to be a pro bowler for some other team, so be it ... But I'm really not that concerned. I have no problem going into 2015 with Vick as our starter.
On the other hand Geno played well in the last 4 games last year and finished 8-8 as the starter. I don't think it was an Idik decision because he wanted to start his draft pick.
I think Rex really knows his Xs and Os. Unfortunately, that does not preclude him from doing and saying idiotic things. Rex's problems stem from his being too emotional.
The problem is not that they did not let Vick compete. They are looking for a future QB. Most of us were. The problem was saying that there was a competition. They were dishonest.
Well if you go through the games, the SD games the perfect point to bench Geno. Then Vick comes in and does nothing, so they go back to GEno who plays ok in Denver, keeps the Jets in the game but doesn't win it, and plays a bit better in NE on Thursday night. Again keeping the Jets in it, making some key plays, but not enough to help them win. Then he undoes those two weeks he could build on with one Q in BUF and it was time to bench him. Vick turned the ball over, but showed some spark. Geno was also 'hurt'. The Chiefs walk all over our D, but the Jets like what they see offensively with Vick. Vick starts again, Jets win. Logically, it makes sense where they benched Geno and where they started Vick. So I agree, it's a non issue. They wanted to be sure with what they had with Geno, because Geno confused them end of last year and training camp. Then he seemed to figure things out from a turnover perspective against DEN and NE (his only turnover was down 7 on our own 1, gets pressured and just throws one up). Then the Buffalo game happened.
Rex botched that whole thing and Vick should've been starting early this year but to be fair where was this rhetoric from Vick early in the year? There's being a good teammate and there's being aloof/careless about your role. Vick seemed awfully content as a backup and if he thought he was better than Geno Smith seems like he'd put up a better fight for the job regardless of the circumstances or at the very least come prepared for each game to capitalize on any opportunity.
I think Vick was very lax and that's on him, but I also think he was trying to play the good soldier.
LOL. They couldn't get him to give the answer they were fishing for so they turned the title of the article into a misquote.
That and we have to remember he only addressed it now because he was answering a question. As for the timing of a change, given the lack of real competition in camp, I think it was pretty evident from Smith's first turnover that he really had not improved enough from last year. The opening day win was a relief to many who saw Oakland at home as the easiest it was going to get for some time on the schedule, but it really told us nothing good about Smith. Certainly by 1-2 the change should have been made. Now, in fairness to Smith, what with the Cb situation, how many more games would the Jets have won with Vick? Hard to say. But I do agree it would have been more than 2 by this point.
No one can realistically say how many more wins, if any, would have resulted in Vick starting. I think it's very clear though, that the offense is much better with him in the game. The points per game may not correlate but your eyes certainly will tell the story.
The part that kills me is I was fairly certain Vick would perform better. And yet we had the Jet brass saying there was a real competition and that Smith "won" it. And then some posters here slurped that bs up. I would think those who did must feel pretty foolish now. I mean it's not like this was the first time the Jet organization lied to the fans.
