That's kind of why I wanted to post this. Kinda gives an idea on the forums opinion if Dennard is taken first round.
The competition will be between Walls, Wilson and any Rookie selected in rounds 1-3. Patterson is not a Rex type cover corner. He was brought in to compete for the nickel corner job. The Patterson signing said its a good bet the Jets draft a corner in rounds 1-3. But corners develop slowly so unless we draft a CB on round 1 which is doubtful the competition will most likely be between Walls and Wilson. My bet is Wilson wins the job before he leaves for FA and the rookie takes over in 2015.
The OP was never written as a gripe..so to start I think Walls wins a close competition & does fine as the #2. I think the need at this position is vastly overblown. Would it be nice to boast an elite CB pairing similar to Revis & Cromartie? Of course it would. But people are acting like this is the biggest need on the team. Far from it. The team has multiple players of varying backgrounds COMPETING for the spot. Veterans & young guys..ALL with some level of starting experience. Legit competition. Again, not the #1 CB spot; The # 2. Let that sink in for a minute. When you factor in the DL they're playing in front of & the HC they are playing for..I'm not buying "the sky is falling" stuff.
Dennard is a very good player and if he is available at 18, he is almost assuredly the BPA. Since I want BPA, I want Dennard.
I think you aren't far off on this, because if Patterson can play nickel and Lankster dime, That leaves Wilson and Walls to compete on the outside. I think Dennard is much better than either so I'd be happy if he is on the team, but I am not unsatisfied with the CB corp we have right now going into training camp. Of course with 12 picks we're bound to stumble across a CB as BPA at some point, so we will probably still be adding someone.
I've bit my tongue up to this point regarding Dennard but I keep seeing his name mentioned more & more with the Jets..I feel I have to speak up. I'm a die hard MSU fan so I saw ALOT of Dennard. While I think he'll have a solid pro career, I think he is vastly overrated & belongs somewhere between 25-30..not top 15 as he's labeled. Dennard benefited immensely from a dominant pass rush & quality LBs in front of him. The MSU DL might've been the best in the country. They routinely would push the pocket 2-3 yards back into the QB's face & opened HUGE blitzing lanes for the LBs to close. Alot of the passes in his direction were rushed, off target or telegraphed. Now maybe he'd benefit from a similar situation w/ the Jets given their DL & Rex..but you can't evaluate that way. He presses well, has plenty of range & can change direction....those are obviously the important traits. But he lacks some twitch & can be slow to react to counter moves down field. That's a scary thought when you play the Pats twice a year..who are all about exploiting stiffness in space. Finally, I look at level of competition. While I love the big 10's vintage style...who were the top WRs he faced this season? Certainly the big 10 has some quality PASSING games..there aren't exactly alot of big time NFL receiving prospects outside of Allen Robinson who the Spartans didn't even play this past year. Bottom line is...Dennard's a solid physical in your face press corner..but his game & resume are far from perfect.
Ras-IR-Dowling for Week 1 and then Dimitri Patterson halfway through the Week 1 game when Ras separates his shoulder.
I don't like any of the options but I went with Walls as Wilson should stay in the slot and I don't want to use a first rounder on a CB.
these are my thoughts exactly...take a flyer on a cb in the later rounds with lots of upside and hope it works out as Walls is actually pretty decent. the offense has been neglected for far too long and I'm pretty confident Rex can scheme his way out of talent deficiencies on the d
For a die hard MSU fan. this is very odd. Dennard was hands down the best player on that defense last year. Without a doubt. Just look what he did against my Buckeyes. That DL was good, best defense in football, but Dennard was still the best player on that defensive 11. Without a doubt. He is a great prospect at the CB position, out of all the defensive prospects, I think he is the safest bet to be something special in this draft. He is a very good man/press corner, who is not restricted to just one side of the field. MSU used him just like we did Revis.. He blanketed every team's best receiver, every Saturday. He lacks some twitch? What does that mean? He lacks twitch? He is slow to react? The kid has fantastic instincts and timing on the ball, he wasn't slow to react. If he was, he would've gave up a lot more completions down the field. Oh, by the way, how many did he give up again? I think you are basically knocking his athletic traits, which isn't a big deal if you have all the other things that make you successful. Revis isn't the most athletic guy either, he turned out just fine I would say, except for that greedy brain of his. Still. When a player garners enough respect from opposing teams to make it a priority to NOT throw in Dennard's direction, that is a VERY positive thing. That's how good this kid was in college. That is something that just can't be ignored. Technique and heart will always be better than athletic ability and speed.
i voted Dennard. our secondary was terrible last year, and has managed to downgrade rather than improve thus far this offseason. in terms of the angst over taking a CB round 1, I'd love to see us go CB round 1, TE round 2, OG or OT in round 3. The draft sets up well for this potential scenario. We are building the foundation, and those positions are in dire need of improving.
Richard Sherman was a 5th round pick and we've got a guy who was involved in selecting him so hey, you never know who we can draft.
First thing I'd argue is that Shilique Calhoun was the best player on that MSU D....not Dennard. Calhoun beat up every single OT he faced & changed countless throws including many at Dennard. It all starts up front. Alot more top OTs in the big ten than WRs to match-up against.Take a look at what he did to Taylor Lewan. Having a front 7 like that allowed Dennard to PLAY as aggressively as he did.We need to figure out what happens when the QBs face get better, the WRs get bigger/faster/stronger/quicker & if he can dominate as much behind an inferior surrounding cast. As for " twitch" I'm referring to his ability to mirror cuts & breaks by the opposition.Suddenness if you will. I saw him get sloppy or slightly slow footed on some deep routes. The only reason he didn't get burned on them is b/c the throws were errant..again back to the DL.He'll be facing much fiercer competition in the NFL.Guys who won't be intimidated by his ability to press, who know how to counter guys who lack twitch..and quite possibly an average to below average front 7 in front of him compared to what he had in college. I'm not saying that he's a bad prospect..or even that he lacks athleticism. I'm saying that there are legit questions in his evaluation which severely hollow this notion that he's this "can't miss" top 15 guy.
He was a administrator not a personnel man. Chances are he little to do with them taking Sherman. He's leaning on the Jets scouts to duplicate what the Seahawks did. A few of the seahawks fans feel he had some say because he at times traveled with the scouts. "Idzik's primary strengths include managing salaries and the salary cap, but has also worked in player personnel. He has been with the Seahawks the past six seasons after previously working in the front office for Tampa Bay and Arizona."
