Romo could be the starter in 2017. If so though, then you need to make another thread: WHO will be the Jets starting QB in 2017, Week 2 after Romo breaks his entire body Week 1?
Personally, I would be just as embarrassed at having Romo on this team as most people felt about having Tebow on this team.
Why do people even think Romo is a possibility? Dallas certainly isn't going to cut him and nobody in their right mind would trade for him with what is left on his contract..oh wait, we have a GM that might after all. Not to mention we are already over the cap for next year before we even start..I guess we can just cut almost anybody any good and just keep the bums we have with bad contracts or on their rookie deal..what an inviting place this will be for FAs.
I completely disagree with this if what you're saying is rebuilding from the very ground up? I hear this constant under current of people advocating that the Jets rebuild from the basics? That doesn't make any sense? If the team already has areas of strength (and the Jets do), it makes sense to keep the productive areas of the team and build upon that. The Jets have one of the best DL in the league. I would personally advocate trading Sheldon and keeping (resigning when needed) Leo and Mo. I also fully support keeping the WR group in tact. Soon enough Marshall will retire and I support trading Devin Smith for picks. This group will get lean enough via attrition. So all in all, on defense I see the Jets needing two corners and at least 3 linebackers. On offense they need probably 3 new OL if the team decides to cut Mangold. They need a TE. They need a FB. They need a RB. They need a QB. They need depth everywhere. So when evaluating all of this, it would NOT constitute totally rebuilding from the ground up. That is too extreme and unnecessary. The Jets will be just fine holding on to some of the right pieces and adding to what the team currently has.
While it appears that Sheldon will be the odd man out I really do hope we keep him. I think he is the best defensive lineman on the roster. With that said, trading Mo and his huge contract may give us little in return. Usually teams tend to go with younger, cheaper talent but it would be interesting to see what other teams would be willing to give up in exchange for Leonard Williams. There are teams with valuable players and draft picks that could use his talents.
Too early to tell but I want to say this: if we have a top 5 draft pick it needs to be a QB. I've never been of that mindset but at this point it's time. It's the only way to turn this franchise around. Obviously doesn't mean he will work out but you take a shot and hope you don't have a draft pick that high for a long time. I'm all in for a QB at the top of the draft.
Sorry if I wasn't clear. I didn't mean a "total" rebuild from the ground up, just an almost total rebuild. Of course they shouldn't tear down areas of the team that are already strong and set. The problem is imo they only have two of those areas: the DL and the WR corps (and how strange it is to say that about the latter. It seems like it's been forever since the Jets had even a decent WR corps, much less one that could be considered a real strength.). I agree that Richardson should be traded. As far as keeping the WR corps together, I would prefer that, BUT...the Jets are already over the cap for next season. Even in cutting Revis, Fitz and Giacomini, they won't have enough cap space to sign their draft picks and any FAs. Decker may not be ready when the season begins. If the Jets could get a 3rd or 2nd round pick for either Decker (doubtful since he's coming off of two injuries) or Marshall, I'd pull the trigger. Marshall will only be here one more year. While it would be nice to have him here to help mentor the young WRs and provide a reliable target for whomever is the Jets' starting QB next season, imo it would be a luxury the Jets can't afford. They need more cap space and could get $7.5 more space if Marshall's gone. He also drops too many passes and is too accepting of that imo. I think they could also save around $6 million for Decker. If the Jets got rid of both, they'd save $13 million on the cap, and they could address some of their other needs. If they get a draft pick or two for them, so much the better. I think the WR corps would be fine with Enunwa, Anderson, Peake, J. Marshall, D. Smith, and either a draft pick or 2nd tier FA signing. Malcolm Floyd might be available and probably wouldn't be that expensive. If they add a true TE who can both catch and block, that will lessen the need for Marshall and/or Decker. In addition with Forte and Powell, they have two more excellent receivers. With the $13 million cap space for moving on from B. Marshall and Decker, the Jets could fix the RT spot with Ryan Schraeder, and possibly add a 2nd tier CB, TE or FB.
How is this possible? All I heard this off season was we just had to get by and next year we had cap room. We didn't sign any big FA (ok we resigned mo), D'brick is gone, Can cut Revis, and we aren't paying for a franchise QB. Who is getting all this money?? I'm not doubting you I'm just dumbfounded...
Romo lasts 2 quarters behind this oline. Never forget the 9/11 game where Tony fumbled on the 1. Gladly eat crow if I'm wrong, but Romo signing will be complete disaster.

The good news is that by cutting Mangold, Richardson (or trading him), B.Marshall (or trading him), and David Harris the Jets can save $31,144,000 in cap space and not incur any dead money hit. They can cut Clady and Giacomini and save another $14.5 million and only incur $1.125 million in dead money. If they cut Revis, they'll take an $8 million dead money hit, but save $7,333,333. If they trade or cut Decker, they'll take a dead money hit of $3 million, but could save $5.75 million. If they trade or cut Gilchrist, they'll take a dead money hit of $2.75 million, but could save $4.625 million Unfortunately, they'll take a $5 million cap hit with no savings on Fitz, but he must go. Think how the Jets could remake their roster with that $52,977,333. They won't, but if the Jets cut or traded Mangold, Richardson, B. Marshall, D. Harris, Clady, Giacomini, Revis, Decker, Gilchrist and Fitz, they'd have a total cap savings of $63,352,333 and a dead money hit of $19,875,000.
Interesting. Doing everything wrong for about 50 years has been manageable. Ryan Fitzpatrick from fucking Harvard University. But Tony Romo is it. The straw that broke the camel's back. Not that I even disagree...
