I can't remember all the picks, and I'm not going to go back and read about every draft, but I do remember thinking the Dee Milliner pick was TERRIBLE. The guy was a walking accident! Picks like him and Gholston, and Lee, mystify me. How can a supposedly experienced and knowledgeable GM and scouting dept. get these picks so wrong? What is the role of coaching, including scheme/system, playing in this? I also remember being really disappointed that we passed over Marino for O'Brien. To me that set a tone for the organization that has carried forward - always trying to be risk-averse. I also didn't like the Adams pick over Mahomes or Watson, and then was really pissed when they took Maye. Grabbing Mahomes/Watson and then Maye would've been a better move, and they wouldn't have had to burn their 2nd rounders to move up this draft, and be wondering which QB to take. The successful teams seem to have a blueprint that they draft to - Steelers, Patriots, Packers, Broncos - to name several. As far as I've seen over the 55 years I've been following them, the Jets last blueprint was under Ewbank. Just what is their identity?
If only we had someone whose sole purpose was to remind us when the last time the Jets won the Super Bowl... this forum would be a finished product.
I would pay for a ten page argument with a guy who didn't actually go to to a certain school in a certain state in the southeast and a guy who can't watch tv in that exact same state. Of course, I'm fooling myself. The first guy would go on ignore on page two.
funny......ownership changes, management changes, coaches change, fans grow up and what happens..... the jets still have the ability to ADD to their woeful draft history. i have watched that youtube draft video dozens of times and it never gets old. unreal folks. you really cannot make this shit up. for me the worst picks are not necessary all out busts but rather the jets getting to cute with their player analyses, lack of vision, and outright poor scouting. a few from the 70's were losers but it really became a cluster fuck in the 80's - hey they picked some good, not great players BUT they also flat out missed on guys like Munoz and Marino. Plus they thought that guys like haight, cadigan, and vick would make impacts. unreal. not much better in the 90's with cortez kennedy (1990) and warren sapp (1995) sitting there. the parcells crap with the draft was not very good. for me, the nugent pick takes the cake. how the fuck can u pick a kicker in the second round? thats grounds for firing. i can't believe the jets didn't get more backlash from that pick. goes to shoe u how they had the media and many fans fooled. bradway and edwards were teflon - IMO for reasons that are not publicized much.
Least favorite - Bryan Thomas. I was screaming "Ed Reed!" at my TV through that pick. I'm still screaming. Thomas was an OK player but, Ed Reed!! Favorite - Vilma. Comfiest pick I've ever witnessed the Jets make. You just knew he was going to be good
Most recently the Lee pick pissed me off to no end. I knew when that pick was made our 2016 season was officially fucked. The stupidity of all those pussies over at Jet nation made me laugh hysterically, especially that mouthy little twerp Dcat?! Lol He LOVED the Minnie mouse pick. He defended Lee at the time like he was his girlfriend. Well, the facts have spoken. Darrin Lee sucks and the Jets defense has sucked since. The 2016 season went to shit just as I predicted and Dcat is the number 1 dingbat at Jetnation.
Least favorite; James Farrior. Not so much for the player himself, but more because the Jets are coming off 1-15 and had earned the #1 overall pick. Hoping for an impact player, Tuna trades the pick and takes Farrior. Orlando Pace and Walter Jones had the makings of perennial Pro Bowlers and could've been cornerstones for years. (I know they had just signed Jumbo Elliott in Feb to play LT so it didn't seem a need.) They then compound the error by making Farrior a role player until 2001 when he finally breaks out and performs at a high level. Only to let him walk in FA after that season and he goes on to play a huge role in the middle of the Steelers D. Outside of one season, the Jets literally got nothing from the Farrior pick. Most favorite; Chad Pennington.
The last pick that I really liked was Jamal Adams. It was a no brainer pick and I think he's going to become a very important part of the defense for a long time to come.
The Nugent pick was based on one reason only. We missed 2 FG in a 20 to 17 loss to Pittsburgh in the playoffs. Jets management figured we were a kicker away from a SB. Nugent was a great college FG kicker. Of course after that draft we went 4 and 12 and fired Edwards. Terry Bradway who actually picked Nug was not fired. The positive is Bradway sucks became a famous poster on theganggreen.com
Hated every single defensive pick in round one since 2012. Even though some have been great. Loved a few players in round 2. Notably the wrs in Devin Smith and Stephen hill. Shame as if they worked out they would of added something different to put putrid offences Sent from my SM-G610Y using Tapatalk
Worst - I don't fault the Jets for picking an outstanding collegiate player only to have him fail as a pro, and there have been a ton of those guys. Hindsight is 20-20, as they say. However, I remember scratching my head "Who?" when the Jets selected Carl Barzilauskas with a high draft choice back in the 70's. It's bad enough to draft an obscure player that high, but it's worse when you can't spell his name. It took me about 15 minutes to look him up because his name was spelled differently on two different web sites. Best - Mark Sanchez. After so many years of enduring the weak armed Pennington era and a disaster year with Brett Favre. I was delighted the Jets finally saw the light and decided to do something positive to end the perennial QB drought. Of course, he ended up not being as good as we hoped, but I think Sanchez's undoing was more of a FO failure. It was clear he was not going to be an elite QB, but he proved he could be effective if surrounded by good players.
Agree, but the pick was also based on the success of NE's Vinatieri, who was so accurate at long distances he was becoming a formidable weapon on offense. Did not think it was a bad pick at the time, but like so many good intentioned Jets picks, it turned out badly.
That was my thought on the Nugent pick. Had he lived up to the hype it would have been worth it. The Bucs made the same mistake drafting Aguayo. The kicker is even more valuable in todays game with the extra point rule.
Some recent head scratchers for me were Coples, Amaro, Devin Smith and Lee. Not a fan of reaching on one dimensional players, and none of those guys were even that good at their one dimension. A guy I was really happy to draft was Mo Wilkerson. One of the only times I can remember the guy I really wanted fell all the way to 30, and Jets were smart enough to draft. It's too bad he flaked after the big contract. Perfect attributes for our D.
One unpopular pick that I was really excited about was the Maye pick. The guy would have been a 1st round pick in a year that wasn't so jam packed with safety talent--and he probably would have been a first round pick that year anyway if he hadn't been injured and missed time at the end of his senior year. It is too easy to forget how bad the Jets safety play was in 2016, and how much better it was last year, despite starting two rookies.
I didn't hate the pick, we didn't give up that much to the Browns and we really needed a qb. Really admired the FO for trying to pick up a qb..
