Hmm trying to do this off the top of my head over the last few years (as everything gets fuzzy after a while and hard to remember how you felt at the time and how much was Captain Hindsight) Picks I loved at the time (edited): - Sanchez - yes it all went wrong but at the time I was excited - Leonard Williams - loved the value and the pick - Stephen Hill - was just looking back at some old posts and I listed this as my favourite pick of the draft that year! Was supposed to have been a huge steal..... Picks I was bothered by at the time (edited): - Milliner - his injury history scared me and with good reason - Dewayne Robertson - hated giving up picks to move up and reports about knees also had me concerned - Darron Lee - I forgot about this one - was really against it again due to his injury history edit: just goes to show how you can convince yourself of things retrospectively - I just checked the draft forum and I was actually defending the Milliner pick at the time....what an idiot!
Least Favorites: Darron Lee - Really wanted Treadwell or Paxton Lynch Mike Nugent - Wanted to break my TV after this one, anyone but a kicker for our first pick in the draft. Mark Sanchez - Wanted to stay where we were and get Josh Freeman Stephen Hill - Going to an SEC school made me feel like Alshon was the second best WR in this class behind Justin Blackmon. Favorites: Living down in Miami at the time, I loved Santana Moss and Jonathan Vilma. Bryce Petty - Thought we may have struck gold late. He seemed like a football playing quarterback Vernon Gholston - Strong, fast, and big...I thought that was exactly what we needed.
I hated the Sanchez pick. I thought we should have drafted Josh Freeman if we were going to take a QB, but I wasn't sold on him either.
Now if only we addressed the o-line ever in the draft and looked long term. Our last o-line draft picks? 2016 - Brandon Shell in the 5th round 2015 - Jarvis Harrison 5th round 2014 - Dakota Dozier 4th round 2013 - 3 players, 3rd, 5th and 6th 6th rounder in 2012, Ducasse (2nd rounder) in 2010, Jesus, no wonder our o-line has fallen apart so badly.
That is spot on considering I have to actually think hard about draft moments I really liked. I remember being excited about Vernon Gholston, Dabrickashaw, and Shonn Greene. I guess 1 for 3 isn't so bad.
While it turned out well I hated the Maye pick. Instead of back to back safeties I wanted Mixon or Kamara. I was furious that we didn't move up for Kamara when he slipped to round three.
The last 8 years HAVE BEEN Painful((((( Just look at that group! eg Calvin Pryor Darron Lee Q Coples Dee Milliner etc etc even L Williams is meh tbh ...he is not positioned or used correctly Favorites: Gotta go back 5 decades to Namath and recently Pennington
For me, it's a toss up between Kyle Brady in 1995 or Jeff Lageman in 1989. With Brady ... every single Jets fan (including everyone at the draft in the gallery) knew that we should pick Warren Sapp (who went three picks later and of course became a Hall of Famer); it was almost like the Jets front office was flipping the bird to the fanbase. With Lageman ... literally nobody had heard of him. And then you had the experts on TV immediately saying "WTF are the Jets doing? He would have been there in the 4th or 5th round?" I'm not saying they were correct; I'm just saying that it just doubled the aggravation.
You guys are cracking me up with your draft day longings for Alvin Kamara. I'm in Knoxville, surrounded by rabid Tennessee fans, and, as much as they loved the guy, none of them thought he was second round material. They thought he'd be a nice role player picked up in the 3rd or 4th.
I remember shouting "We Want Sapp" at my TV in college before the Kyle Brady pick. I was also very high on DeCastro when we took the first of our four recent 3-4 DEs.
You're are so right. I think New York fans are some of the best around. Very informed but the powers that be sure aren't.
I hated the Brick pick @4. Glad I was wrong. You know Mangini was a pretty good judge of talent. Wonder if he would be interested in a GM position these days. We haven't drafted well since he left. Lousy coach but he sure could pick some talent. I really don't fault him for Gholston. The Jets were in no man's land with the 6th pick. All the talent or most of it was picked 1-5.
Totally agree, was going to put him on, but at least we got a few good games out of him. Also, what about Blair Thomas. What a bust. I remember a Monday night game in Chicago. He was having a great game finally and I said maybe he will turn the corner. Then he fumbled the ball an lost the game 1 minute later. Oh the pain
Mangini ran those drafts and was fantastic. He picked great players, as soon as he left Mr. T was influenced by Rex and our picks were garbage. Mangini got a raw deal here and we would have been better off with him
Guy was a shitty coach. The best the team ever did with him was when Burt Farve was drawing plays on his hand in the huddle and smacking guys way too hard in the ass.
