The biggest problem I had with Schotty yesterday, beside that stupidly timed reverse (when the running game had just gotten a rhythm), was the lack of plays designed for Keller. The Jets did not utilize the middle of the field much outside the run and Keller was targeted only 4 times. They need to develop more of a dynamic short passing game, and I don't care that the backs aren't great at it, it needs to be a viable threat or the opposition won't even spend time gameplanning it and won't bite on the play fakes as much.
He puts Keller into the middle of the field which is where you do not want a rookie to be throwing the ball, too much coverage, too many defenders. He needs to have Keller going to the sidelines or the flat more often.
Absolutely agree with you there. I don't understand why we don't have more short-pass designed plays. Forget just the RBs. They also have Keller, Brad Smith, and JCo could stay in once in a while. I'm not too sure about Clowney though. Still, at least three guys are available in short passing situations. Now, I'm no Trojan fan, but someone at work told me today that they run a lot of play action there. Can anyone confirm if this is true? If so, I'd really like to know why Schottenheimer isn't calling for it. Does he have that little confidence in Sanchez's ability to sell it? I just don't understand it.
i remember seeing a few beautiful PA fakes from sanchez earlier in the season, and all accounts i have seen say he is pretty good at handling the ball. im not sure if is schotty or sanchez deciding on how to do the fakes, but most of the fakes i have seen lately are so lame its not even fair to call them play action.
So you are basically saying: Schitty saw how miserably it failed, then gave it a go AGAIN? Fucking brilliant. Just fucking brilliant.
And this is the way you treat a play call in a crucial game with no margin for error? To be clear here I'm annoyed at Schotty at this point for his body of work with the Jets. I think he has been a mediocre (at best) offensive coordinator and I think the Jets inability to stabilize the QB position during his tenure is completely attributable to the fact that his offensive schemes are overly complex and hard to run. I've watched his 4 Jets teams and 4 Jets QB's all under-perform except for the period when Favre was so new to the system that it bent to him instead of vice-versa. I've watched an excellent run-blocking line used in a way that accumulated lots of yards and not enough commitment to them to get in the end zone with the regularity that they should have. Basically I've watched him fumble away 4 years of my fandom and I will be very happy to see him leave or alternately very upset watching him screw things up again next season. He's by far the weakest link on the Jets right now.

The only possible reason I can think of why the Jets don't run more PA fakes based on their successful run game is perhaps the staff want to give Sanchez as much time as possible to make reads. The PA fake usually give less time for the QB to read the coverages assuming the pressure of the rush is constant (because the the QB isn't fully facing the offensive line and beyond until after the fake). Maybe that's why the Jets aren't taking advantage of that option. I agree with ukilledkenny, the limited PA fakes that we have seen have been very sketchy in their exeution lately. Remember the one to Hartsock? at the goal-line at the beginning of the season. That was a thing of beauty.
Remember Sanchez's 1st pass ever? Play Action to Clowney. But now we never see it. Way to go Cutesy. I thought play action was a QBs best friend? Pennington anyone? Goddammit I hate Schotty.
Clowney has almost disappeared from this offense. If his contract is up, I would expect to see him making plays for another team. I'm happy to see him go across the middle on a couple of plays but he's a deep threat who has shut out of that role.
You make a lot of good point but this highlighted point is a joke. The O we ran his first year with Chad was outstanding. It's the main reason we made the playoffs. By the way Chad had almost no arm in 06 and the O that was installed was installed during a QB competition so Chad didn't get all the reps. 07 the OL was a joke and our fragile QB the one that had 2 shoulder surgeries under Hackett and Dinger went down. 08 after another QB competition the winner of the Competition was cut and Favre was brought in and the O was great until Favre got hurt and wore down as he is this year. 09 after another QB competition we have a rookie QB. Our run pass ratio is much greater than both last years Ravens and Falcons teams. In fact we have the No. 1 rushing O without having a great running back and lossing our most dynamic offensive playmaker. It takes years for a rookie QB to develop into a top tier NFL QB. Shotty didn't hurt Brees and he didn't hurt Rivers both of whom are among the elite in the NFL. He certainly didn't hurt Chad who had a bad year in terms of INT to TD ratio but a great comeback year considering his injuries and played his first 16 game season. The Jets O based on the talent in 06 which was at best mediocre and clearly bottom half of the league had one of the best scheme's in football. For an O with a QB who could barely make a throw outside the hash marks and up the field in 06 what that O did was outstanding.
This is kind of revisionist history in my opinion. The Jets were held to less than 20 points 8 times in 17 games in 2006. They were shut out twice and held to 13 points or less another two times. That offense was not outstanding, it scored enough points to win 10 games and was helped greatly by the fact that the schedule had a bunch of weak defensive teams on it. He was the QB coach in San Diego, not the offensive coordinator. It was not his system being run there. He definitely hurt Chad. The guy got run out of town after a season and a half under his system. I really believe this is inaccurate. The NY media got all caught up in the Jets resurgence in 2006 and had to find reasons that it happened. The fact that the offense was better than the pitiful performance in 2005 made it stand out and so the legend of Brian Schottenheimer was born. The guy did not come in here and work miracles. He came in with the benefit of a healthy QB and 2 young stud linemen coming in and trying to make their bones. He turned that into what you'd expect him to have done with the talent, which is to say they performed at the level you'd expect out of them. He didn't just have a healthy Chad either. He had Coles healthy for 16 games and he had Cotchery healthy for 16 games and he had Leon Washington healthy for 16 games. That's why the Jets managed to score a decent number (18th out of 32 teams) of points.
That's exactly what it looked like too, if you watch the game again. Rather take the sack, than have an INT though, so good plays on Mark if you ask me.
but isn't that upsetting? that the good play is Sanchez bracing for a hit from a monster like Freeney? Who the fuck designs that play? Let's let a HOF pass rusher have two free shots at Sanchez. Even if the pass is completed for a TD, Sanchez winds up on his ass. If Sanchez gets hurt on either of those plays the season is over. Fire this idiot immediately.
