Who is the starting SS next year-Coleman or Smith?

Here is a little something I wrote on JetsCentral

Recently, there has been a lot of talk about who the Jets will have starting at Strong Safety next season.

For the past three seasons, Erik Coleman has manned the position relatively well. He has not “wowed” anyone like he did in his rookie season, but he has been solid while on the field; solid, but not spectacular. After having a great rookie season in 2004, he has not lived up to the hype and has been somewhat of a disappointment to fans. He ended the 2006 season with 1 interception and 101 tackles.

Eric Smith, on the other hand, was just selected in the third round of the 2006 draft. At the time, he was considered a reach, and may still be. But it is clear what the front office saw in him, and why they selected him where they did; because if they waited to draft him in the beginning of round 4, they would not have Brad Smith. In his limited action, he played surprisingly well and opened many fans eyes. He proved to be a very smart player who hits hard and has good football instincts. His timed speed may not be elite, but he plays with great football speed. Also, in his limited time he managed 2 interceptions and 27 tackles.

Going into Training Camp, Mangini will surely have it be an open battle for the starting spot, and it should be interesting. Personally, I think that Coleman wins it initially, but will lose playing time as the season progresses, and eventually lose the starting job by week 12. I will be the first to admit that after day 1 of last years draft I was puzzled by this pick, now I am thrilled by it, and I cannot wait to see what Smith can do this season

No way we need him and no we go after him. We're fine at Strong Safety... And Ken Hamlin is overrated. If he wasn't, Seattle would have tried to resign him rather than go after Deon Grant. Plus Ken Hamlin played Free Safety in Seattle.

Nothing about that signing makes any sense at all.
