The way I view it is that its of course not a failure if we don't get Mariota or Winston assuming they don't fall to us. I don't like the idea of trading the house for either given the fact thst I'm not too sure about either of them as a prospect.

With that being said I don't see how there's any way we can pass on either if they fall to us. We need to take one and hope they work out because the leagues all about having a top tier quarterback. mariota in particular should not start right away so it gives us time to evaluate Geno or a veteran some more.

I just hope the Jets are active in free agency, so that they can just pick the best available at #6.

No, Kerry Rhodes was the FS in 2009. The Jets didn't have a true FS after that. Yeremiah Bell played SS his entire career until he came to the Jets and Rex shoehorned him into his idea of FS.

A FS plays 15 to 20 yards deep in most systems. He's the guy who is supposed to see the entire field and react. Rex doesn't have that concept in his defense. He wants the FS up near the line of scrimmage as an additional defender. He wants the CB's to live or die on their own merits with no help.

How many times did we see Rex's free safety give help over the top and pick a pass off? That's a normal occurrence in the NFL and no less so now that the league has turned into a passing pinball machine.

Just go look at pro-football-reference. They fill in the line item year by year on what position a player played. Dare you to find an NFL free safety playing for the Jets after 2009 when Rex sent Rhodes packing.

We need to adress the offensive line first and foremost. It doesnt matter who we put in there, we'll still suck.

Why draft a qb with no weapons. Keep doing the same thing over and over and expect different results.

If Mariota is there at 6 and the jets take him, I won't be mad. Most analysts love the guy, and it would be a gutsy move. Try to sign Maclin, D-Thomas, or Cobb and if not retain Harvin. Harvin, Decker, Kerley, and Shaq isn't a horrible WR core. At the end of the year (especially the last 2 games) you could see the effect of Harvin on the passing game.

Do you know if Bowles utilizes the traditional FS? I know he is similar to Rex in some of his schemes and in his love of blitzing (more like Rex circa 2009, but still...)

He certainly requires a lot from his CBs, but does he also utilize a more traditional FS compared to Rex?

We have weapons now; we can't use the same excuse over and over.

Decker, Amaro, Kerley, Harvin (if not him, then we'll certainly get someone else), 3 drafted Wrs last year alone (we might get something out of at least one of them), etc. etc. etc.

Our team doesn't need more weapons to succeed (though they can certainly help.) We need more solid OLine play, I admit, but we also need a better Qb. Drafting a Qb is not the worst idea in the world; in fact, if we play our cards right, it may save our franchise.

That being said, I wouldn't throw a rookie Qb into our starting offense this year. Hopefully we can have them sit for a year before playing.

Not necessarily! While we do need more OL help, I even put an OT at #6 in my latest mock.

First, we don't know in early Feb, who will be available at # 6, only can take an educated guess.

I never deal in absolutes and say we have to draft a certain position at #6, if you follow that theory you will be reaching for a player.

After Free Agency and seeing what's available at # 6, we need to take the BPA within the realm of common sense.

whether we deal with it in free agency or the draft, I def do think its a need or priority. Id even argue more so than qb. Its not like theres any guarantees im this draft at any position tho.

I never said OL wasn't a priority, you just don't reach for one at # 6 when another better player is available.

The Jets have many needs......OLB, QB, OL, CB, WR (Harvin will probably be gone). This isn't a quick fix, drafting smart, which I believe Mike Mac will do will rebuild this time for the long term.

To answer the question of the thread: I don't know. Honestly I think the smart thing would be to trade down, depending on who is available of course.

every team wants to trade down

This is some what true. Every team does want to trade down and I'm pretty sure every team want to trade up it all depends on who is there that they convert and how much they have to give or receive to do that
