I wouldn't be opposed to trading back and taking the best available OL. It's hard to get excited taking an OL in the first round; it isn't a sexy pick but anyone who truly knows football would agree that games are won in the trenches.
Faneca-Sheriff, I know its a minority pick AND that's a high pick for a guard, but ultimately we have to start in the trenches. Our defences trenches are pretty stout and i would join the chorus of boos if we burn a high pick on the front 7. I don't think we should put it all on a rookie again, not to say we shouldn't take a QB in round 2 or 3, but if we get a FA vet for Gailey to work with for the time being. I like the model teams have used to produce guys like (dear i say it) Tom Brady and Arron Rodgers where you have an established vet and the rook has to come in and earn their keep no mater how high or low they were picked in the draft. And since this draft class is said to be a tad soggy in the QB department as no one is completely sold on MM or Winston and the rest of the signal callers being underwhelming, I'm inclined to play it safe this draft and pick more talented positions and see how next years qb draft class is shaping up. He might not have been pretty but I'm sure there is a Dilfer somewhere in free agency that can just "not screw it up" till we find our guy in the draft. Back to the trenches, i would rather fill the tackle spot with the 6th pick but Sheriff looks to be the safer pick apon my minimal research and I've just heard his name associated with the high rounds more regularly than Clemmings, so that's my rational on that pick, but i wouldn't be upset if we took the OT either. Now round 2? skill position depth/highest man on the board is my philosophy from 2-7 ( basically highest rated player not on the d-line, at least not until later rounds). If we build this right, "Super Bowls? YES WE CHAN!!!"
I think they will be aggressive in signing a FA Vet QB. I don't think they'll need to trade a draft pick to get one. I expect that one of Matt Moore, Shaun Hill, or Ryan Fitzpatrick (if he is cut) will be signed. They will be nothing but competition for Geno, a stopgap starter for a year or two and insurance. I don't think they will trade for a QB like Cousins. He's a nice player, but will cost too much. Besides, I don't think Washington would trade Cousins.
I understand everyone's hesitancy to take a QB with question marks, I really do. However, if we're waiting for the next Luck/Manning to come through the draft, we'll be waiting a long, long time. Not to mention, will we even be in a place to take said QB when the time comes? Maybe, maybe not. I know Mariota has his question marks but we can't just keep waiting and waiting and waiting for that once in a generation QB to fall into our laps. Rodgers had questions marks when he was drafted, hence the reason he went in the 20's. Wilson had question marks, Brady, etc. They all had certain aspects of their game that made people question whether or not they were franchise QB material which is why they were drafted where they were drafted. We can't continue to pass on potential franchise QB's because we aren't 100% sure they'll be one. The old adage holds true, "don't let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game". At some point, we're going to have to step up to the plate and take a swing.
I don't think we've passed on potential franchise QB's because we aren't sure they'll be one. I think we've passed on some QB's because we had just drafted a QB. I think we have passed on some QB's because we had just signed our QB to a long-term extension. I think we weren't in position to get other QB's. None of those cases will be true this year so if the Jets pass on Mariota (and/or Winston) it's going to be because the scouting department doesn't believe they will be a good NFL QB.
If they don't draft Winston then it'll be because they don't think he's going to be a good person and that is irrelevant therefore misguided. If they don't draft Mariota it's because they're scared he won't be a good NFL QB and that too is unfortunately irrelevant because he's there when nobody else is and we're there it's a predestined match so hope for the best.
After looking at that post, I realize that I worded that last part poorly. I don't fault the Jets for not taking QB's in recent years. Like you said, we did draft a couple fairly high so we were trying to see what we had with them, just signed them to extensions, etc. Basically just take out "continue to" in what you quoted and I think it's correct though. I guess I wasn't talking so much about the Jets FO/CS but more so the people on here. Nobody wants us to draft a QB unless we know he's a sure thing, but they just don't come around that often. Even when they do you've got to be the "lucky" team who sucks the most that year to get him. I see enough potential in Mariota, and Winston to a lesser extent, to justify taking him with the 6th. I don't claim to be a professional scout, so I could very well be 100% wrong. I guess we will see in due time.
If either QB is available at 6 we have to take a chance on one of them " hope Winston slides to us . Not like we are going out and going to trade for a franchise QB. Even if they don't pan out it will be the same results if we think geno is our QB of the future.
i kinda factored that in to the part about taking the highest skill position player available in rounds 2-7. Wilson and Carr (Raiders) and we can even throw Brady in for good measure are examples that come to mind, no one reached for them they just kinda fell into their perspective teams lap and rose to the top of the depth chart. If Hundley or one of the other QB names is at the top of the list at 2,3,4 or other wise and no other player offers better value near that position in the draft we take him, stick 'em at the bottom of the depth chart, and see if he is cream or crud. I just think that building an o-line that can protect ANY QB gives EVERY QB on our roster the best chance to succeed. I'll give you Rodgers but the Packers where in a much better place to protect him than we are to protect our signal caller.
The success rate on late-round QB's makes me want to never draft a QB after the early 2nd. Sure you can find them in the late rounds but for every Wilson or Brady there are 100 QB's that don't make it. The success rate isn't that great for 1st and 2nd round QB's either, I'll concede that. It is much better than the later (3-7) rounds though.
I agree 100%. If he isn't, at least, a borderline 1st round prospect, I'm not sure I want to take a chance on him.
The big thing about top 36 is that it's a lock that most of the teams picking 1 to 5 in the draft could use an upgrade at QB. The first 4 picks in the 2nd round are mainly exercised by the 5 worst teams in the NFL the previous season. So if a QB gets by those teams twice the odds are pretty good he's not all that good. Recent exceptions included Russell Wilson (too short and he played in multiple programs in college as a result), Nick Foles (too tall and he played in an Air Raid), Matt Schaub (wasn't that good, just a decent QB for a few years) and David Garrard (ditto). The best QB since 2000 taken in the 2nd round from the 37 to the end of the round is probably Tarvaris Jackson. It might be Geno Smith. Just a total no-man's land for QB's. Garoppolo might change that but I doubt it. The Texans chose to sign and play Ryan Fitzpatrick instead of drafting Garoppolo. The Raiders looked at Carr and Garoppolo and made their choice. Odds are that tells us what we needed to know about him.
From my brain to your keyboard. Seriously though, I get everyone wants to fill the holes we have and are leery about drafting a QB early, but there's a reason each prospect gets the grade they do. Could a guy drafted in the 3rd or later be better than someone drafted 1st overall? Of course, we've seen too many examples to dispute that. The chances of those QB's working out decrease dramatically after those first 36 picks though.
gotta say, beyond wanting to see development from players on contract next year the reasons I wasn't freaked out over the jets losing games and getting better draft position was two fold; One, the jets have so many needs I had a hard time believing one of them wouldn't be filled by a bluechip draftee no matter if they were #3 or #9. Two, I don't feel like theres any must haves in this draft, or rather I don't believe theres that one guy I cant live without that others put on a pedestal. Not Mariota, not Winston, not Cooper, not anybody. thats not to say I wouldn't like to see those guys here, I just didn't feel like our world ends if we miss out on them. we'll get talent either way, its not like we're JUST a WR away or JUST a QB away, or hat those guys are sure answers anyhow. with that all said, despite my unwillingness into putting my hopes and dreams into him, Mariota fits the best with his combination of physical skills intangibles and overall potential, and so thats the guy I want at #6. I haven't lost faith in Smith outright but clearly we shouldn't just hope he pans out, an a aggressive move attaining a QB with loads of upside makes sense at this point. an O-lineman also makes sense, building the trenches is never a bad thing and can help any QB be effective, so maybe Schreff? only if he's slated to replace Ferguson though. I'm not attached to anybody though, I'll take another defensive piece if thats the best we can get. no stress here, get a bluechip wherever you can I say.
Trade down and build the Team with FA and a lot of youth in the Draft. We need a serious upgrade in every position. DL line is our only strenght
