A pass rusher could have a huge impact in our front seven. Despite its flaws the defense can be fixed in one off- season and made into something special. We can use a ton of cap space and all of our draft picks but the offense will still take a couple years to fix.
Quite frankly, the FO only obligation to the team is to get BPA in area of need at each and every round. Last year it was WR heaven and we blew it all to hell. This year the draft is top heavy on the much coveted pass rushing OLB, an area of desperate need for us as well. So I would be very happy if we get one of the most dominating guys in the draft, it might elevate the performance of this D faster than any other position. If we do not land a top WR or MM I would be thrilled with an OLB.
just looking at the top of the 2011 draft... first 6 picks: Cam Newton Von Miller Marcel Dareus AJ Green Patrick Peterson Julio Jones also had Tyron Smith going at 9, JJ Watt at 11, Robert Quinn at 14, Ryan Kerrigan at 16, and Nate Solder at 17. This draft potential shapes up similarly, minus the top CB prospect. Just throwing a little optimism about picking this high in a promising draft. have to nail this selection regardless of position, and come away with a stud player
As a proponent of drafting the best player available I can not disagree strongly enough. Never, never, never worry about need when selecting a player in the top 6 picks of the draft that should be a core part of your team for close to a decade. There is absolutely no way to predict what team needs will be five years from now.
Then we get : Brandon Scherff ,La'el Collins or Ereck Flowers. Defense should be addressed later in the draft.
I'm ok with defense in first as long as the guy is a slam-dunk. And apparently there are quite a few slam-dunk olb prospects right where we pick. Although WR may be a big need and Kevin White has done nothing but impress me. However the real golden ticket is Mariota, we need to get him, idc if we have to trade up this league is all about the QB.
As long as we don't draft Mariota I'll be happy, the jets have so much money we can fix all of idziks flaws in free agency, shame there no qbs available.
IMO Patrick Peterson was not worth a top 6 pick, that's just me though - he's extremely overrated. Ruben Randle embarrassed this fool and Michael Crabtree has made him his bitch pretty much each match-up.
Basically I'm of this mind set. I don't care how we draft at 6 as long as one of two things happen...we draft an impact player ala Richardson or Wilk...doesn't matter if it's on O' or D'. Or we trade out of 6 with a massive trade package because the Iggles absolutely HAVE to HAVE Mariotta if he's there. THAT is all I want to see happen.
I'd be happier if they traded the pick to someone desperate for Mariota..... For the current state of the team, why invest the $$$$$ for that pick this year...depending on the team, take a second round pick this year, and a first next year. We'll be getting a good prospect at the top of the second this year, and the GM and HC will have a year to really evaluate the roster and be in a better position to acquire the 1st round talent that can add value to the roster with a season under their belt.... Though, I do agree with you...if White is there at 6...I'd love that pick. He won't have anyone to throw it to him yet, but he'll be a year into that 3 year learning curve by the time they can get a QB...
