One thing I don't understand is how the Giants find receivers like Victor Cruz and now this kid Corey Washington. We're using draft picks on Stephen Hill and other trash yet these two go undrafted lol. Just lucky?
the giants have done a nice job finding some diamond in rough WR's for sure. we may end up starting Kerley and Salas when all is said and done, and i'd be ok with that. maybe not as explosive, but they've been finds as well.
May end up starting? Kerley is already established in this league and will definitely start. Salas is the one who's on the bubble. Please don't put those two in the same category because Kerley is clearly the better WR at this point in their careers. What gets me is Idzik. You draft Shaq fuckin Evans in the 4th round. That's a total waste of a value pick with so many good names still on the board. The guy was a possession WR at UCLA and he's 6'1, it's not like he's a 6'4 red zone threat. And he's out the whole year. Just a bad pick.
good points in this last paragraph. the kickoff does become more important as the season goes on. colder weather, overused kicking legs.. If it came down to Hill or Gates tho, i'd still go Hill. Gates isn't a great returner, and like Hill, his promise never seems to translate to on field production. Hill is faster on the go route, blocks well, and has more upside. That said, i wouldn't rule out Hakim over both. Let's see if those 3, as well as Ford, show anything good against the Eagles. Either way, Salas should make this team, and potentially see a fair amount of snaps during the season. like his route running, hands, and ability to pick up yds after the catch. someone you can depend on. kind of like a lesser Decker in some respects.
you know what i mean. the 'may' was more in regards to Salas. Kerley for sure will start. Evans was a terrible pick. Didn't like it at the time, and like it even less now. The move for me was trading our 2nd and 4th to move up and get Jordan Matthews. hurts me to see how well Matthews already doing. kid will have a very solid career.
Gotcha. Yeah I figured that's what you meant. That would've been a nice move. Give our 3rd and 4th for Matthews would've been a great move for the Jets.
Thanks. Not only will the KO be more important late in the season, but even earlier in the season sometimes there's a stiff breeze in the Meadowlands and other stadiums or the ball doesn't carry as well in some places as others. I agree with Hill over Gates, primarily due to his blocking. I'd also go for Hakim over Hill and Gates if he showed any promise at all as a WR. Yes, imo Salas has not only earned a spot on the roster, but some fairly significant playing time during the season as well if he continues to produce.
The Giants scouting department obviously knows what to look for in a low draft pick UDFA scenario at WR. The Jets aren't so bad at that either but I don't think they're as good as the Giants in that regard. The Giants are MUCH better at finding a star receiver early in the draft. The Jets have only draft two wide receivers in the 1st, 2nd or 3rd rounds since Parcells left town. Santana Moss #1 in 2001 and Stephen Hill #2 in 2012.
Different teams have eyes for different positions & seem to be able to stockpile talent...conversely they tend to have positions they struggle with. Jets continue to find great DL talent through almost all avenues including UDFA's. TJ Barnes is yet another example. They struggle w/ offensive skill.
Rex has identified Saalim Hakim as the Jets #1 KR. If we assume the top 3 WR are Decker, Kerley and Nelson and that Saunders as a fourth round pick isn't getting cut we're talking about this: Decker Kerley Nelson Saunders Haakim Which leaves one spot for Hill or Salas unless the Jets plan on keeping 7 WR's. I don't believe we've ever kept more than 6 under Rex. So if it comes down to Hill or Salas, who stays?
Salas is a way better receiver than Hill it's not even close. Fukk the "measurables" and "potential". Which player--right now--possesses better route running, catching, experience and chemistry with Geno? It's Salas by a mile.
Gotta be Salas. I don't care how well Hill run blocks, he can't put it together at WR and I really doubt we keep 8 WRs.
Salas, its pretty much a no-brainer at 6 WRs. Even though Rex has never carried 7, given what happened last year, I think there's a chance they carry 7. If they feel they have to keep Hill, then I think they'll go with 7 WRs to keep Salas. That being said, I think the most likely scenario is that the jets carry 6 and, barring an injury, Hill should be gone.
Salas will make this team, I thought that Hill was going to get cut awhile ago and now it looks like it is extremely likely. I think that they should try to find a way to trade Hill. We won't get anything for him but if we can get a team to absorb his cap and get some form of compensation for his physical attributes, then we should. I doubt a trade happens but It would be the perfect scenario. Gotta stay optimistic, right?
That's more or less what people said about Sheldon Richardson. It's not Idzik's fault Evans got hurt.
I'm probably the only one but I'll be really surprised if we cut Hill. If we are done with him then he needs to be shopped first, you can't tell me that Carolina wouldn't give up a draft pick for him.
I think Hill is safe.... this is his do or die year but he's not Idzik's guy who maybe he gets chopped. I think Gates and Salas get cut which sucks because I really like Salas but he'll be a numbers casualty.
I think the real battle is between Hill and Nelson in my opinion, not Salas. Salas has YAC ability and strong hands so I think he is a lock here (Nelson has had a quiet preseason and hasn't gotten much separation). And Hill is playing on Thursday so I wouldn't be surprised if he's cut or traded if he can't flash against Eagle backups. We can definitely get a draft pick for Hill, even if it's a conditional 5th or 6th from Panthers or even Browns. I would take anything at this point. http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/je...ill?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
