I doubt the Jets take a QB in the first round. Though if someone slides in to the second or 3rd I could see them going that route.
I think the way I'd put it on the 1st round thing is that if the Jets take a QB in the 1st round they have to make it work. They're giving up too much value if they do that to not absolutely make it work. So that means if you are taking a 1st round QB you are also spending a lot of the cap importing good free agent veterans on that side of the ball. Probably a WR, a TE, at least one guard. You're probably looking at upgrading RT as well. The Jets just can't have another high draft QB fail so soon after the Sanchez blowout and the failure of the Geno launch. I think the Jets are better off going heavy in the draft on that side of the ball and letting the QB situation settle for the year with a vet and maybe a cheaper draftee but it's not clear what the Jets will want to do with 2014. If they go the all-in free agent route with a 1st round QB then they let whoever wins the QB competition in camp take the team out of the gate with no excuses other than their own performance for failing. That would argue somebody other than the rookie on the field at the start unless he blew away camp.
Or we can hope Bridgewater has a dui or something and falls to the mid first round (no I would never really hope for that, it's all about sarcasm)
Yeah because adding MADD to the people on the Jets case is exactly what we need moving forward. This also kind of relates to the Manziel situation. Are the Jets sure that Manziel can handle the pressures of being put in the Messiah position without totally self-destructing? Getting sent home from Peyton Manning's camp is a flashing red light in that area.
Brad, maybe 1968's looking at it from the other side of the fence, i.e. DAMM (Drunks Against Mad Mothers....lame joke). As for Manziel, while getting kicked out of Manning's camp may've been a red light, he wasn't legally tied into that camp (no responsibiity to teammates, subject to fines, suspensions, etc.). Not saying he wasn't "frat boy" irresponsible, just puttin it out there.
Actually my comment was a sign of frustration, the Jets aren't a good team this year but in draft with a number of very good QB's in it the Jets screw up by being a bad team that lucks in to several wins it shouldn't have had and played itself right out of the top QB's. But what I wouldn't mind is a Marino situation where a player falls because of suspicions. That said I think there are a couple of exceptional developmental QB's in this draft, but I would have preferred the Jets to have played to their real talent level this year and gotten a shot at one of the better 1st round QB's.
This is not a great QB draft. It's maybe a good QB draft. It's missing the marquee name at the top, despite the hype around Bridgewater, and it's missing the other guys that might be top 5 picks. In 2004 Eli was the #1, Roethlisberger was projected in the top 10 and Rivers in the top 20. It didn't quite go down like that but there was no question the draft was a deep QB draft. This year Bridgewater is a top 10 prospect, Carr maybe top 20 and the Manziel wildcard if he comes out. It's not a great draft for QB's. In 2012 you had Luck #1 and no question about it and then RGIII rising rapidly into the top 10 and ultimately #2. You also had Tannehill projected in the 1st round and he rose rapidly. You had several wildcards in that draft also. That was a great QB draft.
Bridgewater is a top 5 prospect, Carr is a top 10 prospect, Manziel is a top 15 prospect, and a lot of people love Bortles enough to where he could even be a top 10 pick. Also, McCarron is a very good player as well. I agree that is not outstanding, but it should be pretty damn good... or at least we should hope.
You are arguing with a Geno fan. Every QB sucks this year, according to BWay. No- every QB LAST year sucked- this is a great class in comparison. Probably best top to bottom class in 5-6 years. _
Bridgewater may not even be the 1st QB taken. He's definitely a top 10 pick but it's easy to see a couple of non-QB's going before him and then the team in the 3 or 4 spot falling in love with one of the other QB's and making that pick instead. It's also easy to see him going 3+ with no other QB's taken until the 11 or so. The thing to remember about this draft is that it is not rich in senior QB's that people have been tracking for a few years as potential 1st round picks. The seniors by and large are guys like Murray and McCarron and Boyd who people have been tracking as 2nd round or later picks. Could Derek Carr get taken up high? Yeah he could get taken in the top 10 and he could even get taken above Bridgewater. However he's going to get a lot of eye-balling from the talent evaluators between now and draft day and he could also go in the mid 1st round. Johnny Manziel is going to have a lot of people looking at him also and a 20 year old guy with an irresponsible streak in him is going to seem very risky to most teams. His size won't help him either. The thing that was amazing about the 2004 draft is that there were 3 seniors projected to go in the top 20 and one of them was a unanimous 1 pick. That just isn't the case here. We're short on seniors and there is no prospect who is clearly the #1 overall choice.
Well there's certainly a favorite to be the #1 choice, and thats Bridgewater. Yes, there are other possibilities, but 90% of people will agree that Teddy will be the #1. If not, then he's not falling very far. It doesnt take a great senior class to make a great QB class. If Carr falls to the middle of the first, the Jets better be the team to take him there. Either way, there are a number of QBs with the potential to go in the top half of the 1st. 5-6 QBs have been mentioned there (although Mettenberger is hurt now). Last year there was barely 2. The prior year, there was 3, and Weeden snuck in. Itll be interesting to see how it shakes out, but the more QBs the merrier.
Scouts Inc has 3 QB's in their top 32, including Manziel who may or may not be in the pool. Including Bridgewater who is not clearly in the pool. Including Bortles who is not clearly in the pool. Scouts Inc has ZERO senior QB's in their top 32. That's one less than last year when they had Geno there. CBS Sports has 3 QB's in their top 32, including Manziel who may or may not be in the pool. Including Bridgewater who is not clearly in the pool. Including one senior, Derek Carr. It's not what it seems to be this year. It's not a great year for QB's. It's a good year (maybe) if the underclassmen come out. You want to know why so much attention was focused on Marcus Mariota this year? Because the senior QB's weren't taking up the media space that you'd normally expect them too. The guys who looked like NFL prospects also looked like backups for the most part. This draft was long on Ryan Nassib's and short on Ben Roethlisberger's so the media started staring at a sophomore QB in a spread option offense and fantasizing. It is still possible the sophomore will fall into the trap to his likely detriment and the detriment of the team that selects him. As 1st round prospects we've got a senior from a second-tier program in Derek Carr. We've got multiple juniors from second-tier programs in Teddy Bridgewater and Blake Bortles. We've got two sophomores still undecided in Johnny Manziel and Brett Hundley and a third who might change his mind. The real value in this draft is the guys who might go 2nd to 4th round and even slip to the 6th. Aaron Murray and A.J. McCarron are the headliners in this group. They're only a bit less likely to be good starting QB's than the names up top but they're going to be a lot cheaper on draft day and if they wind up as backup QB's waiting for a chance, well at the cost there's no downside.
So is Jimmy Garoppolo. That doesn't mean either of them is going to sniff the first round. Fales is below A.J. McCarron and similar to Aaron Murray in terms of likely draft position. He'd be below Murray if it wasn't for the knee injury.
Team needs a QB, thats obvious. Having said that, I dont think a first round QB is the way to go. Build up the supporting cast first. When that is finished, find your QB. These guys are decent prospects, but I think their just being set up to fail if we bring them in like we did with Geno.
Foles didn't sniff the first round. Wilson didn't either, they're turning out to be the beat qb's of their class. Stop drinking the mainstream koolaid. Who gives a fuck what cbs' rankings are, all these so called experts in the media are wrong year in and year out.
The main thing is, the senior bowl has yet to be played. Carr will easily blow up after the Senior Bowl - and a strong performance by Fales could jump him into the late 1st round. I hope he stays around the 3rd round though so we can get weapons.
