What I like about Smith here, is he has a chance to develop his route running behind our depth, while immediately putting to use his strengths. This is a great situation for Smith to develop his game. I expect him to make an immediate YPC impact and in the next year or two will break out.
I imagine this year he won't get many reps, mostly 4 receiver sets. He'll likely start getting more playing time next year. Still I'm sure they won't pass on using his deep threat ability to open up the running game a bit.
I think he's going to get plenty of reps. His presence alone makes Decker, Marshall and Amaro bigger threats. No better place to learn than in-game. When you're sending him up a sideline, it doesn't really matter how inexperienced he is. I don't think he's going to be running too many inside routes, but I expect him to have an impact right away. Not just because of his own production but because of how he affects the offense as a whole.
With Bowles coming from the Parcells tree, I don't think rookies will be "anointed" very often the way we often saw under previous coaches. I think he'll get his opportunities, but more so later than earlier, and only after he's actually shown something to earn those reps.
I don't think he should be nor do I think he will be anointed. With what he's going to be asked to do (unless Bowles is an idiot) I think he's going to prove he belongs on the field.
I'm just expecting to see a lot of raging around here when Kerley gets more playing time than Smith does at the beginning. Doesn't take much to get the B word floating around.
Well just know that anyone who wants to label Smith a "B word" after this season is a moron. Kerley is going to see plenty of snaps, but we are also going to see plenty of 4 WR sets in this offense. I honestly don't see any similarities between Kerley and Smith right now so one's playing time shouldn't affect the other. Over time, Smith can turn into the slot guy who can take a slant the distance but right now he's not. And to reiterate, anyone who thinks that makes him a bust in year 1 is a moron.
while true, you know it will start in the second practice of training camp if smith doesn't score an 80 yard td in shorts, or drops a pass. happens every offseason.
who? If D. Smith, I think it was meant in a positive tone. He's kind of had star struck eyes when talking about the NFL and playing with Brandon Marshall
I saw a couple of tweets that made it sound like he had to be helped off the field - they've all been deleted now
Seth Walder@SethWalderNYDN 15m15 minutes ago FYI: Jets say Devin Smith's now-deleted tweet had nothing to do with an injury.
I'm not gonna lie, I really wanted Odell Beckham Jr. last year and it bothers me that the Giants got him and he put up the ridiculous year that he did. Smith is the same height, 4 pounds lighter and ran the 40 in the same time, so that's where my hopes are. I want a young phenom on offense, I feel like everybody gets them except us (though that's probably correlated to never using a first rounder on offense). Realistically I'd love to see him do something like 40 catches for 600+ yards. Given that he's the 3rd/4th option that'd be great for me.
