looking at this list especially the recent guys I wonder how they would have done in NY. Flacco would be Sanchez, Foles would have never saw the field, Dalton would never be good enough. Kap and Wilson would have been interesting most likely run to much cant read defenses.
I am fully in the camp that you NEED to get your QB at all cost. If you miss, it does set you back, but you can't win consistently without one. If you're picking early (and the jets will surely be picking early) identify your guy and do what it takes to go get him. Sanchez might not have ended up being the right guy, but he was the guy they wanted and they traded up to get him. One of the problems is that you end up staking your reputation and most likely your job if you're in the front office on the pick. Pick right and you're a hero with long term job security, and pick wrong and you're out of town in 2-3 years.
I think you just gotta keep drafting QB till you get the right guy. Every other position can be addressed in free agency, but a no ones ever going to get rid of a young and talented quarterback. For those picks you aren't drafting QB, the question should be what can do to make our future's QB's job easier?
Also can we get a game manager QB who can help win games now and also mentor for the future? It seems like we can only get geezers who really can't play anymore or guys that want the starting job all for themselves.
I was not a huge fan of making this move at the time but...how sweet would it be if we had Alex Smith right now? Not the greatest QB but definitely good enough to win with if you put playmakers around him
Yes, I agree. I'm not saying Mariota is not going to be a good QB. He very well might be. I just don't know that he is a guy worth of being a top 3 pick. If the Jets end up in the top 5 (which I believe they will), I think that they need to take the best player available. I would like to see an OT, WR or CB. All high value positions with some very good players coming out.
Yes. Thanks for the correction. That was a franchise killing decision for us, although Vinny did give us one of our best QB's years ever, the same season Peyton was drafted. Unfortunately, there was no 2nd choice for us in that 1997 draft. If you look at the draft that year, the rest of the QB class was very slim pickings: Only 3 QBs selected in the first 99 picks ... #26 Jim Druckenmiller / #42 Jake Plummer / #99 Danny Wuerffel. Yikes. Maybe the three worst breaks in franchise history were Atlanta grabbing Favre one pick ahead of us in 1991, Peyton staying at Tennessee in 1997 and Vinny's injury in 1999. If ONE of those things goes the other way, there's no doubt we win a SB somewhere along the line.
Nobody gets a turn. Some teams have a quality organization built from the top that chooses the right people to help them win. Those are the teams that have multiple Super Bowls and consistent success, with a handful of crap seasons sprinkled in. There are teams that grab onto the organizational leavings of those top teams, and have a second tier of success, but can't always compete at the highest level. There are teams that luck out and grab team builders and catch lightning in a bottle for a few years. There are teams like the Jets that can't find a smart hire in a closet with a flashlight, but are able to over perform and pretend for small, not very significant jaunts, only to fail and continue to make bad hires throughout the org. The Jets aren't snakebitten and don't get a turn, because ownership has no earthly idea how to build from the top. Then there is the bottom of the barrel, teams like the Browns and Jax, who actually luck into a .500 season every once in a while. Those teams exist to make Jets fans not feel like a homeless man. Nobody gets a turn. Smart teams already own those turns.
I want Connor Cook in 2016. We won't be good next year either more than likely. I agree on the Mariota assessment, too many question marks for me to like. Great athlete, lots of potential but I would much rather take the BPA that can have an impact on our team right away. Help get this team back to respectability.
Remember when there was a glimmer of hope that we would sign Peyton Manning in the offseason, Then he went to Denver and we extended Mark? Yea... that was it, and we missed it
That one is easy to second guess but I give the Jets a pass on this one for 2 reasons. #1 - I remember reading reports that Peyton had zero interest in coming here. He didn't want to compete for the city with his brother and some were speculating that there was too much of a personality clash with Rex. #2 - There were MAJOR concerns over whether Peyton Manning would ever be effective again as an NFL QB after going through the spinal procedure that he had. I don't blame the Jets for not getting more in the mix on the Manning sweepstakes. Especially after the way the Favre thing blew up in their face.
Agree 100%. As much as this franchise has been a victim of their own ineptitude, they have also been victimized but plain old bad luck. That '97 draft was tough. Without a top tier QB sitting there, it was hard to know which way to go. Orlando Pace went first to the Rams, Darrell Russell (DT) went to the Raiders, Walter Jones (OT) went to the 'Hawks, Peter Boulware (DE) went to the Ravens. We took Farrior at 8. Ended up being a solid player but if course his best years were as a Steeler, not as a Jet!
Assuming that he continues to improve, I would like Cook a lot in 2016. I am a Spartan so I see a lot of their games. He is not as polished as he could be so I'm glad he's returning for one more year. But I see some good things in him and believe he could be a good NFL QB. Big kid - 6' 4" 220-something I think.
Just sheer stupidity. No QB is going to help this team "right away". Every QB is going to go through growing pains. To think that a less athletic, inferior talent to Mariota is going to make us contenders in 2017 is just plain stupid. By 2017 Mariota will be excelling in a pro set offense and have us competing for multiple playoff berths. Yeah, lets take the inferior talent because he's played in a pro set offense as a 20 year old against COLLEGE PLAYERS. Just say it, you want Cooper. At the expense of the best college QB over the next 2-3 year horizon at least. _
Yeah, his game isn't fully polished. The guy can make some amazing throws in the pocket or on the run. Just needs to polish up that footwork some more. He's going to be a top 5 pick in 2016 if that improves. Love the coaching going on at MSU right now. He's going against a good defense each week in practice.
There really wasn't a glimmer of hope. Pretty sure the day after he was released, his camp released a statement that he wasn't interested in the Jets.
If great athletes automatically translated to great QB's Vincent Young would be on his way to the Hall of Fame. There have been plenty of athletic College QB's who put up ridiculous stats only to become busts later on in the pros. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
It speaks volumes when we get excited about our Qb killing a screen play. When Matty did that yesterday, it was refreshing. And that's a problem. I'm buying into the Mariota hype. But, more than anything else, I want a Qb who's intelligent and can carve up a Defense with his brain just as much as he can with his arm.
