What was promising for me is that the Jets proved they could beat a bad team even while misfiring in all 3 phases at various points in the game. We're lucky Jackson was out.
offensively: OL looked much better in pass protection & opening up holes. When Greene was in there, running game looked pretty damn good. Sanchez played much better in the second half. Plax with some acrobatic catches ... the more of these catches I see, the more I believe he's shaking off all the prison rust. Defensively: Maybin was generating pressure & even commanding some double-teams as soon as ball was snapped. Cro had a decent game defensively which will hopefully setup a good string of games for him ... he can be very streaky both good & bad. Revis didn't have his usual dominant game which makes me believe he'll be that much more focused in the upcoming games. Bills had some big drops on their final drive but in the end the defense did manage to close out the game. Offense/Defense/ST made mistakes but Jets got a win & have a beatable opponent while Bengals have a really tough matchup coming up. - LT & Kerley injury status ... when will Jets publicly say if they're healthy enough to play? Hoping Greene can recover enough to carry the ball more also.
Positives from the game... OL. This unit has been much maligned so far this year, for the most part deservedly so, but they played imo their best game of the season as a unit yesterday. Ferguson is still playing at a less than Pro Bowl level, but the pass protection and run blocking were above average for a change. DL and the run D. This unit gave up very little on runs between the tackles. I was sorry to hear DeVito got hurt, but Pouha is playing very well. Maybin and Pace. Maybin's sacks show him to potentially be Pace's best balance on the other side. Greene's ypc. Greene looked like he was hurting a few times, and I think that's why he did not get more carries, but his ypc was excellent. Can't think of anything else. Oh yeah, the Jets won an ugly game.
o-line... actually blocking ppl greene... thats the greene i know receivers... clutch sanchez... the QB we all know, not a great game by any means but got the job done negatives: schotty abandoning the run, again. DB's were not playing physcial cromartie's head is in another dimension. sooo inconsistent and his days as a returner better be over. oh yeah a chance to redeem himself with a key tackle on 3rd down, not even close
Most promising things: 1. We didn't lose the game in the 4th qtr. The Defense kept it together just long enough to let the clock run out on the Bills. 2. The OLine played well enough to establish a credible running attack although our OC decided to go to the pass when the run was working. Maybe BS was trying to keep Greene off the IRL.
Agree with this for the most part, especially Cromartie... At this point, Im fed up with the way he plays/has been playing. He blew the Oakland game, and couldnt even fair catch a punt. Him and tackling= a non existent relationship. Guy doesnt know how to and simply isnt willing to. He's a bitch. The game was pretty ugly on all phases besides the run game. Not sure how we managed a win, but always grateful.
Great post and a big reason why I believe that this year is a transition year for the D and that the future is very bright, if Tannenbaum can fill acouple holes. Wilkerson is very good at the 2 gap. Additionally you are starting to see teams run away from his side b/c along with holding his gap, has a huge wingspan that is difficult to run around. He's that good NOW. Frightening thing is, he was drafted as a high ceiling guy. He's only gonna get bigger, stronger and smarter. I believe by next year, after a summer in the weight room, he's gonna start disengaging more blocks and the sky is the limit for his potential. Kenric Ellis is extremely stout in the middle.Just an absolute rock in the center of the field. When he learns leverage and gets alittle stronger, he'll begin getting penetration, which will make him a Kris Jenkins/Vince Wilfork type player. Those 2 youngsters up front could completely change the dynamic of this entire defense moving forward. Like anything in football, it all starts up front. Those 2 anchoring the line, getting penetration and disengaging opens up playmaking opportunities for everybody including Rex's playbook. I do see some holes that need to be filled this offseason. Team needs to add more speed and athleticism to the LB corps. That doesn't mean a superstar. Just someone who can cover, has speed to the edge, and can blitz. Same can be said at safety. It's time Jim leonhard becomes more of a role player. Brodney Pool is the best coverage safety on this team and it's time the coaching staff realizes that. Alongside him, needs to be an athlete who can match-up with the Rob Gronkowski/Darren Mcfadden's of the league. Those aren't earth shattering needs with a healthy amount of cap space heading into the offseason. Meanwhile, younger players like Wilson, Maybin, Mauga, Mcintyre, Ropati will continue to develop within this system to go along with Revis,Harris & Cromartie. Folks, I see a defense with a great future.
I tend to agree. I was over joyed with the additions to the D line this offseason. While our D has had issues this season things are looking up along the line. Losing Thomas really hurt out Run D, he sets the edge so well and we need that with as stout as our interior D is. We need a good OLB. Someone who can get pressure without being part ofa 5 or 6 man rush. We need to find our version of Suggs, Harrison, Ect to be come elite. Maybin is a pure speed guy who, while showing a great motor, seems to lack a variety of moves or any ability in the run game for what our OLB's need to do. We should continue to be a very good defense for the forseeable future. One that is a good mix of vets and youth at most levels.
agreed our defense is going to be good going forward, if we can add a playmaker at either safety or OLB this offseason its going to be very fun next season. If we somehow acquire a playmaker at both spots? haha our defense would have all-time potential.
Excellent points. The additions of Mo-Wilk and Ellis might prove to be as big to the DL as what DeBrick and Mangold did for the OL. Having said that, we need speed and strenght at the LB and safety to content with this new double TE monsters. That must be the primary goal.
