I'd like to thank all of the little people who made this day possible. Some would attribute my success in this poll to shrugging my shoulders, saying "meh", and clicking a button without much serious thought or insight. Some would be right, but I take full credit for having such incredible insight and intestinal fortitude. You are honored to have me and I graciously accept your praise.
I don't think it's that unreasonable. You're not just trading up to get any offensive tackle you're trading up to get the consensus best player in the draft and one of the best OT prospects in a decade (maybe a little less when you factor Joe Thomas in). It depends on how far apart the negotiations are. Mac could have some sort of gentleman's agreement with Mo and his agent to resign him to his huge deal after this season when cap space opens up, which is why there hasn't been a negotiation leak. If Mo looks like he's gone after this season it wouldn't be the worst idea in the world to get your franchise left tackle for him. Realistically I don't think he will do it because it could essentially make or break his tenure as GM.
This doesn't add anything to anything, but I like how the number of people voting for Clady has steadily been increasing since the Jets traded for, you guessed it, Ryan Clady. There were like two votes for it when the trade actually happened, 13 since. Nostradamus would be very proud of you gents for your fine prognostication skill.
When I saw this poll on friday I predicted to myself they would trade for Ryan Clady I just didn't click on the poll until today. Trust me . I was right all along. Just like I predicted they would finish 10-6 last season but I kept it to myself until after the final game. I already know for a fact who the Jets will draft.. I'll let you know sometime in June
The "gentleman's agreement" you mention would really not make much sense in that they could sign him long term right now and save money on the cap and I am sure if Mo's team was approached with this "gentleman's agreement" his agent would be the first to point that out. It seems that there is just too big a divide between the sides and that is why you don't hear anything.
For what it's worth we're pretty much past free agency. Opening cap space just means Fitzpatrick's agent will point out that we can now afford to give him more money. I'm not really sure how resigning Wilkerson to his deal that would probably exceed $16.5 million/year saves us space. I guess you're thinking they defer the big boy cap space to next year? And then cripple ourselves in free agency for back to back years? If he resigns I hope they eat a lot of it this year when free agency is over.
You were already talking about them signing Mo to his extension next year while keeping him on the franchise tag this year. That is a $16M cap hit this year and the same next in your scenario. If they extend now it brings his cap hit down this year when the team needs the space. Sure it will be higher next year but that is when they have the space. Seems your thinking keeps them crippled this year while mine frees up space. The team will likely have $40M in cap space next year. Free up space this year, take a big hit next so that the remaining years are a reasonable cap hit.
What I'm saying is, if we sign him to an extension this year, why would his cap hit necessarily go down? Are we going to pay him $8 million this year and $23 million next year? I don't think that's very good cap management when the holes keep building (especially when you factor in the age & possible production decrease of David Harris, Mangold, Marshall, etc.) I'd rather balance the cap hit evenly over the next two years and be somewhat of players in free agency next year, than free up cap space this year to basically not improve the roster, and have less money to spend next year. The other point I was trying to make is that with free agency done and buried, we don't need to make any additional moves this year outside of the whole Fitzpatrick situation. Why would we want to hurt ourselves next year before free agency starts, when we can't make anymore moves this year anyways? I'd personally rather keep a crippled cap this year, with plenty of space next year, looking at possible free agents of Brees, Luck, Cousins, Von Miller, Chandler Jones, Dante Hightower, Cordy Glenn, Harrison Smith, Alshon Jeffery, Michael Floyd, etc. What splash move are we making this year with the freed cap space?
Mac's not about "splash" moves. He isn't Tanny (thank God). Following the draft and TC there are always some decent players available. OL depth could be improved, perhaps an upgrade at TE, a CB, maybe a P.
Not players that command a high salary. He's not about splash moves? Why'd he give Revis the richest CB contract in NFL history to return to the team? Cmon now. The lovefest for Maccagnan is annoying sometimes.
It'll be interesting to see where Tunsil will end up after the Rams/Titans trade. Some of the pundits seem to think he might drop down to 6 or 8. Do you trade up for the best player in the draft?
