They have over 30 albums. The first time I saw them was at The Little Shubert Theater in NYC in Feb. 2005 for 'Shockheaded Peter'. The next time was in a really small venue in NYC in 2010 after a Jets game, it was kind of a smarmy bar restaurant that was really dark and smelled like beer (which was so fitting) with about 50 tables. They are very tight musically. The singer was not classically-trained (voice), but he dramatizes his falsetto, and is self taught on accordion, ukelele, piano. I mean, who has a band with someone who plays an accordion and wears all manner of cabaret facepaint like in German nightclubs in the 30s, someone else who plays a kid's drum set, and just a bassist? I think a lot of the subject matter is what turns some people off, but it's very inventive and they have a huge cult following. It's really a love em or hate em kind of thing.
Everyone knows 'Werewolves of London' but overlooks how brilliant the lyrics really are. He's the hairy-handed gent who ran amok in Kent Lately, he's been overheard in Mayfair You better stay away from him He'll rip your lungs out, Jim I'd like to meet his tailor. I love that.
A great song that I never got sick of. I always loved "Roland The headless Thompson Gunner" from that album. More great lyrics: "Roland searched the continent for the man who'd done him in He found him in Mombassa in a barroom drinking gin Roland aimed his Thompson gun - he didn't say a word But he blew Van Owen's body from there to Johannesburg"
I think they're touring with Rise Against this summer.... btw, I'm pretty sure that was the theme song for my college girlfriend
EDIT: I know I've mentioned this before, but I highly recommend the documentary 'A Band Called Death'. What an amazing but depressing story.
While these guys arent at the top of my list, theyre great live performers, got to see them last night. Sold out show...They won me over last night. Electric guitars, chicks in summer sun dresses and Whiskey on the rocks.... great to be at a real concert again!
I gotta get tickets.... seen 'em both before (but Decendents prob 20+ years ago). Rise Against puts on a GREAT show.... for a punk band, amazingly tight https://www.theamp.com/events/detail/rise-against
