Well like Kurt said their sound has changed a bit, in particular the vocals (although they were always a bit off the beaten path). I remember I was nuts on that band back in March though, especially their album "The Chainheart Machine". God, I had that cd in my player for months
Like 1028 mentioned it all pretty much started (and peaked) with At the Gates' Slaughter of the Soul, Carcass' Heartwork, and to a lesser extent Dissection's The Somberlain which was a little more black. After that you have In Flames and Dark Tranquility which followed with some pretty good stuff, and then like just about any sub-genre it got flooded with the same old shit and pretty much died out. The best modern day band playing this style is Arsis particularly on A Celebration of Guilt and A diamond for Disease.
Ahh, Heartwork certainly influenced the genre, but I wouldnt exactly consider it "melodic". It just happens to have a very clean, crisp sound compared to alot of other death metal of its time and also has alot of guitar harmonization. Another gothenburg band from back in the mid-to-late 90's that really signifies what metalcore is going for(except a much more metal image) is Night in gales..
I thought so  Just changed over to... Tornado Of Souls - Megadeth. And 1028, clear your bloody PMs.
