Sorry for all the links. I hate reposting stuff that I've already argued to death in the past. I had a post somewhere looking at trade-ups also and it showed very few teams that benefited from trading up for any position and a lot that suffered for it. I don't recall how the defensive backs worked out in that equation although Champ Bailey, who was traded DOWN for in the Ricky Williams deal (I think), didn't help Washington enough to avoid being traded on after just a few years.

The long and the short of it is that defensive backs, and cornerbacks in particular, just aren't impactful enough to spend a lot of value on unless you already have the other pieces in place. You work outwards from the pass rush to pass coverage in terms of looking for effectiveness because there is NO defensive back around who can cover a good receiver for 5 to 7 seconds if that's what the pass rush allows.

I have no problem with conservative offensive coaching if it is designed to exploit a strength that is proven to win games against good teams. Smashmouth football is actually very entertaining to watch, particularly compared to an obsessive-compulsive WCO that completes passes at all costs regardless of whether or not the objective of the pass (a first down in most cases) will be achieved.

Conservative defensive coaching on the other hand drives me nuts. Bend but don't break football almost always turns into bend-me-over football against a great team.

I see what you're saying, but a really good CB like Revis can have as powerful of an impact on the game as a pass rusher would. If he prevents the ball being thrown to his side of the field, that really makes life easier for the defense as a whole. I know that CB's are easily more exploited if there's no pass rush, but some CB's can stand out regardless, like Revis seems to be.

Holy shit...you're STILL trying to convince people that picking Revis was a bad thing BradwaySux?

Do you really think anyone but you will ever buy that in this case like...ever?

Revis got beat several times down the stretch when the Jet's pass rush had completely broken down. There is NO CB in football (and never has been) who could stay with a good receiver in the absence of a pass rush, at least not since the chuck rules were limited to 5 yards from the line of scrimmage. There is no CB in football (and never has been) who just was not thrown at if the QB had all the time in the world to do it.

Revis, like Aaron Glenn, is a very good instinctive CB with excellent read skills and amazing athleticism. That will not make the Jets pass defense work if the pass rush is not working and it won't keep Revis from getting burned in that situation either.

David Barrett + a good pass rush is worth more than Darrelle Revis + no pass rush. That's football, that's all it is.

After watching 6 years of a coachs devoid of any form of intensity, just seeing Cowher get worked up and ream someone out will make me happy.

Especially after that pathetic and inexcusable "motivational" pep talk by Favre. What an unmovitated, emotionless bunch of losers, lead by the head clown Mangina. Thank god he got fired
