What about the OL getting pushed off the ball in the run game yesterday? The OL has been inconsistent. Geno definitely holds onto to the ball too long at times, but then again that might not be just on Geno. Without the play calls we cannot really assign blame on a sack. Was it a coverage sack, an OL getting beat, or Geno getting the timing of the play wrong. What bothered me was at the end of the game, the OL knew they had to block 3-4 DL and give down the field routes a chance and they couldn't.
My choice for the OP's question is Idzik's commitment to Smith. Now I immediately concede Ryan may be part of that commitment, but it is inconceivable that Ryan is the sole person who has been committed to Smith. But Idzik picked Smith, and imo that is why he also did not go Qb in this year's draft with a decent pick despite the talent level in it. Look at Carr, he had four TD passes yesterday.
Yep, the Jets are 1-5 because the offense sucks and the offense sucks in large part because the interior pass rush against the Jets has been amazing. Geno's regression is a bad sign but until the Jets stop leaking pass rushers right up the middle that's going to continue and probably worsen. One of the reasons I'm not calling for Vick right now is I don't think he'd be able to do much with a DT in his face over and over again. Brian Winters ACL may be a blessing in disguise because the Jets will now have to try everybody they have at LG and identify the one who plays best. Rex's main fault as a head coach is that he doesn't know that the bench exists when a player is failing. If he has picked the guy to play the guy is going to play until he gets hurt. That's a very bad quality in a head coach.
is it really? It could have been with progressive improvement from some young players and a healthy decker. But that didn't happen. (I was expecting marked improvement from geno and winters). We have the same team as last year now. And a record that reflects what we truly were last year.
This roster is poorly constructed that's why it appears as though it's the same team as last year. Let's just take our first 2 picks for example. Pryor is a talented player but this secondary would have been better served having FS who is proficient in coverage rather than adding yet another in the box SS. Amaro is another talented addition but I think a dynamic deep threat WR would have been better for the offense. In theory such a WR would open up the short and intermediate areas of the field for Decker, Kerley and Cumby. CJ is added to the 6th rank rushing attack is another example of a lateral move that makes the team "better" than last year's on paper.
My biggest disappointment is how inconsistent the whole team is, especially the coaching and preparation for games... and not just this year. How they can hang with good teams one week, then get blown out the next. How we lead the league in penalties, then commit none for 3 quarters. How we March down the field one drive, then punt 4 in a row. My biggest issue is with Rex, he can scheme great when he wants to, but too often he thinks we'll win, just by showing up.
I tend to agree with this observation as far as it goes, but the FO did add Decker, so they showed they can go out and address a team need, one that involves the way it is structured. But the main problem remains Qb and the cb's. Even the OL play is hard to separate from Smith, who holds the ball too long and makes it easy for the pass rushers. But the main thing that motivated me to respond to this post was the CJ reference. Imo one big part of that was supposed to be his ability to catch out of the backfield. The problem is that Smith allows the D to load the box, and that is hurting all the Rb's, CJ included. But I was not opposed to his hiring due to the hope he would be involved in a more dynamic attack. The problem with running that, though, remains SMith.
He did, no argument there. But, there comes a point in almost every single game where the team needs their guy to step up and make a play. The drive they had prior to their last, was that moment. Did Rex not give him the chance to convert on 4th down? Absolutely, and that was a mistake. I certainly don't expect the kid to be a finished product at this point of his career, but there it was, the opportunity every QB should want to be in, and nothing...
Yes, Smith played better than against SD, but thats not much upon which to make positive statements about him. I also thought that next to last drive was very deflating. The game was there to be had, Denver had continued getting stupid penalties like that hands to the face call on that punt, that cost Denver over 30 yards in field position. Yet with the game on the line and Denver's having given up 10 unanswered points, Smith does nothing.
There's nothing there I disagree with. But in order to say he "regressed" he would have to have been stepping up and making those plays at some point then stopped. IMO, aside from having a better grasp of the offense which naturally should happen for any player in the 2nd year of the same system, he's neither regressed or progressed. He's still the same guy.
The worst aspect? being 1-5. After 2012 we knew that 2013 was going to be a down year, what we didnt expect was for 2014 to be another down year.....even if we were 3-3 or 2-4 right now it would so much different. Now we are essentially done and have to wait another 11 months to hopefully start back up again...
Well, shit if we drafted a blue-chip guard in 2013, I bet the interior pressure wouldn't be as bad as it is now. But according to certain people, you don't draft a guard in the first round. Look at the Cowboys who look to be revived by drafting o-lineman.
the worst aspect of the Jets this season is that they are 20 million under the cap..........and it shows.
I wasn't clear in my initial comment about Geno's regression as it relates to this season. I based that comment on how he finished the last month of 2013, not anything that's transpired since. He was OK against the Raiders, but at least I felt like it was a performance that somewhat continued his progression from last season.
I find the term "regress" is overused and incorrectly applied. I think people like to use that term to disassociate themselves from a player they once touted; kind of a subtle way of saying "I wasn't wrong about him he just changed for the worse".
In my opinion, bad QB play/command of pass protection and bad play by some O-Linemen (Winters in particular) have an effect on the rest of the line. It's not just the plays that Geno and Winters clearly blow, but it also creates this atmosphere of uncertainty and doubt, where other offensive linemen are so preoccupied for covering up the mistakes of other players, they can't really focus on their own job completely, and play to their full potential as a unit. Then there's also the predictable playcalling, the chronic inability to stretch the field, etc. I really think our O-Line would be much better with a quality QB.
the difference is they have a QB you can build around - he isn't perfect but he is in the top half of the league - we have consistently had a bottom 5 QB and until we get that sorted the rest is largely irrelevant - now it is possible (just) that Geno could be decent with a decent supporting cast but I doubt it (and the cowboys haven't drafted a Guard earlier than the 3rd round since the 1990s!).
That is a good point also they actually have a QB. We would have to give Geno an Andy Dalton like supporting cast just to give us a chance at making the playoffs. Just sick of seeing the interior pressure. The next guy that comes here at QB, I hope we have the issues fixed with the G positions. We can live with the tackle / center spots for at least 2 more seasons.
The same thing that has been the problem for several years: the statstically worst QB in football Geno Smith. I'm so glad John Idzik "won the draft" with his "value pick" of Geno, right Bradwaysux?
