Good post.... But, as we said, Our coaching staff is supposed to have their strength in DB's - You would hope to get better value at that position and be able to find diamonds in the rough like the Pats have done giving you the opportunity to spend elsewehre... They must think Miller just BLOWS. And as far as OL value goes - Again, compared to the FA contracts guards got - these guys in the draft were bargains - It just so happens that the market hasn't caught up and Guards drop in drafts and would have dropped right in our laps like Mangold did. It would just seem logical that the Jets coached up CBs and spent on Guards in the draft to get the best value. But, you're right CHARACTER plays a major role - as we saw last year with the Schlegel pick.... So the Harris pick this year was to make up for the Schlegel pick - I'd say the character thing painted them in a bit of a corner and sometimes hurts your value.
1. I don't call it value when you trade picks away to move up. In my book value is just the opposite. More like when you trade down gets picks and a good player, that is the epitome of value. Getting a your guy who falls to you at original spot can be considered good value too. But again giving away multi picks to get your guy is not value. It may be agressive, but not value. I think we had too many holes to fill to be as agressive as we were. With this being said, I agree with you on paper that Revis fits our mold well. 2. Taking OL in rounds 2-5 have little to no impact on cap investment.
Have to disagree here. It was my recollection that in 2003 JP Machado let the Giant LB come through unblocked and CP was pounded into the turf on his hand. I was at that game. In 2005 he was not already hurt, just not fully recovered playing behind a typical "unprepared to start the season" Herm Edwards line.
I agree with a lot of what you say but 2 things bother me about this. 1) With so many holes to fill, we traded away a lot of picks. I do believe we got two very good players and they will be a part of a young, talented foundation in tune with core values but at what cost? 2) I disagree that CB was such a huge need, especially considering JetBlue's pont about Mangini's CB coaching strength. I think Revis will be a fine player for us, but believe we had bigger needs. This is a very good point. I'm not very cap savy so I'm not sure what impact having a lot of low round picks in one area would have. Perhaps we need to space out the picks over a few years to take cap pressure off? I'm on board with this.
Good post... I'm a trade DOWN guy and Get VALUE...... Great point about VALUE Vs AGRESSIVE.... What happens when you do this is you leave value on the board PLUS, you are saying that this player that you moved up for is a SLAM DUNK.. NO BRAINER PRO BOWLER...... Like Dewayne Robertson - At the time I said, this guy better be one of the top 3 Defensive Tackles in the league for years to come... You better be wiiling to give up you first Born if you spend THAT MUCH to trade up for a guy like this..... It's hard for a player to live up to such expectations and it's hard for him to be a Value at that price unless he's ALL WORLD.... Just like DROB (but, less costly), and knowing Mangini's forte is DB's, Darrelle Revis BETTER be a lights out shut down corner back in this league..... Otherwise their talent evaluation skills at the position they should excel at should be questioned as well as their drafting skills..... I had the same problem with Herm - Guy was supposed to be a DB coach - OK, then COACH SOME FREAKING DB's..... Get the team VALUE at DB and allow them to spend elswhere - If you can't coach UP DB's and NOT spend at DB then what they hell can you do? This team should never have had to go out on a limb for a CB... And now that they did, he just better be the best thing since sliced Bread.... Guy has to live up to being the CB that a CB coach Hand Picked.
Good points all around. I am a trade down guy too. The draft was excuted almost to perfection last year. I just wish they had used it as a blueprint for this year. We could have filled a lot of spots and had an incredible core of youth on this team.
Hey, I wanted to trade down last year too - As we saw, there were OT's as good as Brick later but, I get the whole Hometown hero thing... Brick was known as a weak run blocker though and had trouble with weight so, I found it hard at the time to spend that much on him.. A few people here were in that camp that Brick was not a sure thing worth a top top pick. I wanted to Trade Down - Draft Ngata for DT and then grab OT's later on and more OL this year..... Sometimes it seems like teams overthink the draft.
