Did he and the Steelers win the SB when he was a rookie?

No, at the time Brady, Big Ben, and Eli were not elite QBs. They turned into elite QB's but were not elite when they won.

Drew Brees was on the rise to elite and Peyton was elite (don't start Junc).

Brady had a great defese, Big Ben had a great defense (and ref help), and Eli had a great defense. The Patriots and Giants D stopped what was considered to be some of the best offenses ever.

None of these QB's were elite when they won their first super bowl. All of them needed help.

To answer the question, the Jets have never struck the timing right where they have time to develop a QB, they have been stuck trying to fit QBs in to win before the time goes away. The one year they sucked bad enough to get that QB and rebuild, and well he went back to college

Just saw that post after quoting your first one, elite =/= winning the super bowl. Look how Big Ben played that game, 9/21 and 2 picks.

Tons of little things like others have pointed out.

But the #1 reason the Jets are not and never have been a dynasty is lack of franchise personality. And this always starts at the top.

We had the Sack Exchange in the 80's which was wonderful. It gave the Jets a true identity for a few years, and gave us some OK results. But that identity didn't last long.

Then came Parcelles, who changed the team logo back to it's roots and really gave the team it's first true identity in years. Keyshawn, Curtis Martin, Wayne Chrebet, Vinny....then Vinny tore his leg off the first game of the year after reaching the AFCCG the year before and there went that team identity for ever.

Now we have Rex (and Sparano, which is important). For the first time in team History we have a TRUE, very strong team identity. Powerful top defense. Strong smash mouth running, like the old days. 2009, 2010, and this year forward, the Jets will be a tough out.

Every fan of football for the next 10 years will describe the Jets the same way. The more years Rex has to shape his team (Revis, Coples, Hill, Terminator, others) the closer we become to Rex's vision, which becomes our identity.

Please God, keep Rex at the wheel another 15 years.

Please God give Rex enough time to build his vision that becomes a dynasty, with SB after SB after SB.

Winning 'one' SB becomes almost meaningless less than a yr or two later.

But building a dynasty with a hard core personality that plays at the top year after year and all the trophies that go with it is soooo much more important.

In 1997, Jets under Parcells had the first pick but Peyton decided to return to school & play his 4th year. Some articles state Manning went back to school because Parcells wouldn't guarantee him he'd be the first pick if he declares draft eligible.

    =====
Short but brilliant choice of words. Jets had some bad breaks but if you talk to fans of other teams, they'll also list bad breaks. Great organizations/teams/players overcome adversity but they're few and far between.

Hess biggest problem was that he would hire the wrong football people and then sit in the background as they ran the team into the ground. An owner that leaves the football people alone is awesome only AFTER good football people are hired.

I really agree with the people that said it's a bit of everything. Sometimes it's ownership, coaching, drafting, or on-field performance. It seems like many times it's been a borderline jinx (all the heartbreaking, unique ways they have found to lose over the years). Many times, it's been a combination of some or all of the above. Often, there has just been a better franchise within their division (The Bills w/Kelly, The Pats w/Brady).

It's very frustrating as a long time fan. Especially when you see teams that were long time jokes win a SB (Bucs, Saints) or see other long time jokes at least get to the SB (Seahawks, Cardinals).

Since the '68 season, they just can never seem to get it all together at the same time.

Peyton played an extra season at Tennessee because Parcells wouldn't commit to taking Peyton with the first pick.

I think the Jets and the Vikings are the two most snake bitten teams. Jets definately for the AFC, and the Vikings for the NFC.

I think I wouldve shot myself if I was a Vikings fan after 98 and 09. Then again the Jets fell in the championship games to just like the Vikings those years...

    This is inaccurate.

Parcells basically told Archie Manning that if Peyton came out he wouldn't be playing for the Jets. Parcells was going to trade the pick for a bunch of players to help the Jets win the Super Bowl by 1998 at the latest.

Leon Hess was terminally ill at that point and he hired Parcells and gave complete control of the team to him with only one mission and that was to win Hess a Super Bowl before he passed on.

There was no way that Peyton Manning was ever going to be a Jet. The trade downs in 1997 were just going to be a lot more lucrative. Parcells knew he couldn't win a Super Bowl in 1997 with a rookie QB and that the odds were very low for 1998 also.

I really think ever since Parcells came aboard they've turned things around completely as an organization. Now, I know that they have no superbowls, and obviously thats what defines success. But they are far from a terrible organization these past 15 or so years. They are competitive every year! And they have been in 3 AFC championship games since then! They just haven't been able to get over that last hump to the superbowl, which has to do with 3 individual games and NOT the organizational strategies.

1998 was the only snake-bitten result in the AFC Championship Game and the Jets were in Denver which made snake-bitten a real possibility.

2009 the Jets were in the AFC Championship Game with a rookie QB against one of the all-time greats in his own house. Sorry, snake-bitten wasn't the problem there, the odds on the Jets winning that game going in were probably 20% tops.

2010 the Jets were in the AFC Championship Game against the greatest NFL franchise of the last 40 years in their house. Again, the odds on the Jets winning that game were low.

In 1998 the odds were less than 50/50 but not 20/80 like 2009 and 2010.

They had waaay more than a 20% shot in 2010. In 2009 I agree, but not 2010. If they just woulda friggin shown up in the first half.......don't make me go down that road again in my head.....

I thought they had a decent chance in '10 based on the fact they had beaten them in Pitt earlier in the year.

Then again, you could say the chances of beating them in Pitt twice in one season was slim.

Haha i was going to say the same thing...on one of his boozed up nights he made the deal, that in turn gave us 50 yrs of poor football, bad breaks and complete confusion at times.

I pray to the good lord its not true because that means at least 7 more yrs of this shit..lol

    Coaching and GM's.

Owners ultimately Hire the GM's so they share some blame.

You've summed it up well. The only thing I'll add to that, is that whenever we start it build an identity, the front office and owner seem to get ahead of themselves and assume it will continue that way without paying more in contracts to keep the continuity and add "just one more piece", or somehow believing momentum alone will take them to the next level. Perhaps it's part of the identity crisis of sharing NY with the Giants, or just getting too much positive publicity in NY when things start to work.

Although the ownership and GM's have changed, the pattern continues. This goes back to Weeb being tight with salaries after SB3 when key pieces left. Then there was the Riggins debacle. Somehow we assume Walton can keep the defensive identity Walt Michaels built, and he's allowed to leave with his Scotch and water in hand. Mangenius took as to the playoffs unexpectedly, and they sat on their hands and didn't build on it for 2007. We saw it again after 2010 when they somehow thought that after two AFC Championship appearances it was somehow their turn to be in a Super Bowl. Plaxico can simply replace Braylon and Cotch. They acted like saying "ground and pound" ad nauseum would somehow create it, but they allow the O-Line depth to weaken.

It seems to go on and on that way. This team sorely needs a dominant NT, and that in the Rex era we were only truly on our way when Big Jenks was healthy creating havoc inside. Guys like that are hard to find, but I'm surprised there hasn't been more of effort to find that guy the past two years.

I like the new identity with Sporano's offense. It should fit in well with how we want to play defense. I am looking forward to this season. Then, we just keep BUILDING on it, not decide we're good enough to allow Revis to leave etc.

If this is accurate, I have to Put a huge Dunce Cap on Parcells head..... Especially since a Trade down is worth a fraction of what it would be with Peyton not involved.

I also shake my head at not locking up Orlando Pace as option #2...

I met Pace last year and laughed about it with him.... How Parcells learned from that and when in Miami Grabbed the LT when he could...

HUGE mistake not going ALL-In for Peyton IMO and to me it will remain one of the biggest mistakes ever by Parcells and the Jets.
