Cam will be one of those guys that is a lightning rod now but universally loved later in his career. Most people hated Kobe Bryant for example for being selfish and a ball hog, now everyone loves it because it shows he's competitive. Most people hated Randy Moss for being a jackass on the field most of his career until the twilight when everyone kissed his ass. lots of other examples of guys like that. They are different than everyone else so when they first succeed you want to tear them down but eventually people recognize the greatness and laugh about the other stuff even though they don't really change its who they are. 12 year veteran Cam Newton will be getting his ass kissed by everyone. "nobody has fun on the field like the great Cam Newton anymore..." I can see it now
Yeah, its all good. I just find it frustrating from both ends that people seem to only be able to accept the situation as being 100% due to race or not at all. Cam Newton is black which realistically probably does place him under harsher criticism than he rightly deserves. He is also kind of a tool- and therefore worthy of some criticism imo.
The problem is that the same people that want to castrate Cam for celebrating have no problem with other players showboating as seen earlier in this thread. That's where the race problem comes into play. You don't have to like or dislike anyone because someone tells you to. But if you were fine with Tebow doing his thing (which the whole country embraced him for because that's who he is) and JJ Watt sack dances that mock other players then there's no reason to have a problem with the way Cam Newton conducts himself. Not to mention he makes sure every one of his teammates gives a child in the crowd a football after every score. Go ask Tebow how he feels about gay men and abortion and tell me what a stand guy he is.

Fair point- I think you're right on the money. This whole conversation is funny because its really only happening because Cam is so good and the Panthers are WINNING. People expect an unrealistic amount of humility from superstars, especially when they've never been humble before. Similar thing happened to Jay Cutler this year, who used to get torn apart for being an asshole, now everyone is a-ok with the guy because he bounced back. It's also the only reason anyone puts up that smug prick Tom Brady.
Its just us old fucks that don't like him. Kids love Cam Newton. Not just the kids that he's giving footballs to but kids watching that at home as well. Go to any schoolyard in the country and ask them who their favorite QB is. You won't be getting Peyton Manning, or Tom Brady or Drew Brees. Thats boring. You're getting Cam Newton. Which is another reason why I say he will be more liked later on in his career - these kids will be adults then. The same thing exists with Odell Beckham Jr. by the way. I personally hate that d bag with a passion. But I was at a midget football game down near Pittsburgh of all places watching my nephew and before the game all these kids were just taking turns trying to "OBJ it".. one handed grabs. kids wearing his jerseys, etc. He's another one that kids love. (unfortunately as I hate him haha and I don't hate Newton)
That's why I'm saying I do agree that race plays a factor, although it doesnt tell the whole story. Playing devils advocate you could argue "Tebowing" (which I agree was stupid) was a showing of humility as the intent was it was similar to praying and meant to be giving thanks to God. Also, I saw him get made fun of far more than I saw him praised for it. As for JJ Watt, his showboating wasn't something that followed him in career leading up to the NFL. It seems like more of an extension of his ego due to fame than his personality. If anything is truly of obnoxious about JJ Watt it the overkill on the whole hard work mantra he has. The guy is like a walking corny motivational quote generator.
Maybe I'm in the minority that likes Cam Newton and dislikes OBJ. Maybe because he's a Giant maybe because I'm a racist/prejudice against those with blonde frosted tips.
How about, mostly all the celebrations done by all players is getting out of hand. 1st downs happen on average about 40 times a game, celebrate a key 1st down towards the end of the game to seal a win, sure, celebrate every 1st down, way out of hand. You even see guys celebrating when they tackle a guy after a 5 yard gain, stop him for no gain and I might think you deserve about a 2 second celebration but a tackle after a decent gain? Just get the fuck back in the huddle. Celebrations after TDs, sacks and INTs? Sure a small celebration is in order, it is part of the game now, fans expect it but long and drawn out celebrations for everything has to go. Especially if it is the same celebration over and over, stale, at least T.O. had some original stuff. I am sure for some it is racism but "mostly"? I doubt that.
I thought i was the only one. Frosted tips are the WORST. But i think Liking Cam and not liking OBJ is easy. OBJ is a selfish diva prick. Cam has a lot of swag but he has fun and spreads the love but a lot of people confuse swag with douchbag. The most negative thing he has done is pulling down signs from opposing fans in his own stadium. Notebook incident at Florida aside. Touchdown balls to kids? Yup. heaping praise on opponents in the media? Yup. Plays with a smile on his face? Yup. The dude is the new prototype.
