Alex Smith is an intelligent football player, but he also plays scared late in games (I remember watching the NFCCG 49ers - Giants, the kid just couldn't complete passes in the 2nd half to help the 49ers advance). Maybe he just over-thinks particular situations I don't know. Geno I hope does incorporate a more intelligent approach to the game, but I hope he doesn't ignore his gut feeling.
I don't disagree that a more dynamic offense is generally a good thing. But to paraphrase Donald Rumsfeld, you play the game with the team you have, and I don't think Smith was capable of being a more dynamic Qb last year than he was, which was not much. It was a fact that his ypa DECLINED in the last four games from the season average to date, a by-product of hte necessary decision to take fewer chances that had previously led to too many turnovers. Marty and the CS made that choice because of Smith's limitations, and given the relative success of it, it was the right one in the short term. I like you are not impressed because the effect was limited, and also because the quality of opponents were weak, and I also expect a similar approach this coming season will be countered by opposing DC's prepared for it. And I am here specifically referring to Smith running the ball more often. He's not a good enough passer to make teams pay if they prepare to counter him running.
Good god. This is a fucking football forum and he just paraphrased Donald Rumsfeld. What a joke. But to paraphrase Louis CK
Anyone else bothered by his sleeves? Much rather the cuffed sleeves look... Guy looks 10x more homo with this shit.
Holy hell. I am sitting here with a WAIT and SEE attitude about Geno Smith, but am compelled to shitfuck stupid posts criticizing him. Don't make it easy for me, Jay.
Peyton and the Broncos lost because the Seahawks figured out Peyton's plan. They knew the hand signals. Then again, Peyton is a known choke artist in the playoffs. Geno was far too raw to make any significant impact last season. He could barely take snaps under center, he never stepped up in the pocket to deliver throws. The weapons on the outside were shit also, but Geno in a sense failed to control what he could control on the field. I think the decision-making on Geno's side got a little bit better the last 4 games but that's it. The key to Geno's season is the fundamentals [footwork, reading defenses]. Those HAVE to improve otherwise, there will be a new QB in town in 2015. Marty is an excellent OC, no reason to put any blame on Marty at all for Geno's shortcomings. Marty has his own work cut out for him. The only reason fans should complain about Marty was due to his short-yardage game-plan which got so much better as the season went on. He tried to make Geno the hero several times, instead he throws 3 interceptions in 1 QTR against the Pats. Or the pick 6 in Carolina.
So is Brady since 2004. You cited Alex Smith's decision making in the NFCC. I countered. You need to own up.
Alex Smith was different. He was throwing the football into the dirt I mean c'mon, Smith left a lot of plays on the field. People want to blame Kyle Williams for those fumbles, but Alex deserved just as much blame. Peyton and Brady, they went up against better all around teams, they weren't the best team on the field. The 49ers were the better team up and down. I've seen Brady and Manning play bad in playoff games, but they never played scared.
Then you didn't watch the Jets beat the Pats in the playoffs a few years ago, because Brady played scared from the moment David Harris picked his pass in the first quarter. Alex Smith had a bad game in that NFCC against the Giants, did throw a few balls into the dirt but still threw for a couple hundred yards and 2 TDs (no picks). The week before, he played lights out against the Saints, he destroyed them. Peyton Manning played like a scared fucking bitch against Seattle in the Super Bowl. It was an historically bad performance. He got raped and let them tattoo their logo on his ass Oz style. Own up.
He did have that deer in the headlights look, but I don't think that means someone is scared. As the game progressed, he had the look of a defeated opponent. Our defense was too good that day, there was nothing Brady could do. Brady had a feeling of hopelessness. I guess to an extent that means he played like a bitch. I'll ask to ask Marsellus Wallace and Jules Winnfield if Brady played like a bitch. Back to Alex Smith though: Everything Alex Smith did was in the first half, he completely disappeared in the 2nd. Not a trace, he had opportunities to make plays but he was so hesitant. Leaving plays out on the field, that's playing like a bitch. I get your point, I still think Alex Smith played like a complete bitch compared to Brady / Manning but that's my opinion. Smith had opportunities to win that game for the 49ers. Brady and Manning? Not so much.
I actually think Alex Smith is a good template for the kind of QB we need him to be albeit just a little more explosive.
oh yeah.. lets hope our QB is the next bum for the first 6 years of his career just to turn around to be a OK Game Manager. He did have a really good year last year though (statistically). Dude cant play from behind at all though
Alex Smith is a good QB. If Geno gives us what Alex gave KC last year then we're a playoff team this year. Alex utilizes his strengths to its fullest. He rarely turns the ball, uses his legs and is accurate as fuck. I do believe Geno could be more explosive. But considering the kind of team we're building having a QB that won't turn the ball over and runs the offense well is what we need.
He has a reputation for leaving plays out there on the field though, I'm not a huge fan of Alex Smith compared to everyone else but when the pressure is at it's highest this dude crumbles. Only 1 time against a Saints team on the road did Smith strive. I don't want Geno to look at Alex Smith and say that's the blueprint. I want a cold-blooded killer at QB. If Geno perfects his craft he can be just that. Strive to be greater.
