Hughes having a meltdown over people shitting on him on Twitter https://www.google.com/amp/s/heavy.com/sports/new-york-jets/connor-hughes-epic-denzel-mims-rant/amp/
Huff is gonna be an important player for us. He had 2 sacks last night. He may not get to 10 sacks this year because he probably will be in a rotation with Blair, Curry, and JFM, but he's going to get pressures, sacks and TFLs.
Moore will get time, Berrios perhaps not. Mims may have overtaken Berrios already, and Berrios may get relegated to the 2nd half.
Amazing, isn't it? It's like now they're taking that depth for granted and actually wanting to trade away one of our most talented WRs. Look at the attitude he has. How many WRs who were 2nd round picks would ask for a meaningful role on STs? It shows he's all about team and wanting to contribute in whatever way he can. You don't trade players like that away unless they have little talent/potential, but that isn't Mims.
Boy I really hope all of this was written before the "play" last night. That little 20 yard play showed me a lot, and hopefully, showed the team and CS a lot as well. Looks like Mims really wants to be here, really wants to play, and really has desire and fire in his belly. I cannot recall a Jet receiver making a play like that in many years. I know it was against nobodies and in a meaningless situation, but that dude took 3-5 guys and dragged them on his back to a 3rd & 18, 20 yard first down gain. I think we need to stop the "cutting Mims" nonsense talk. Guys a player.
That's the problem with Hughes. He's too young. He has to ask other people, and can't figure things out for himself. He has too little experience with football and the NFL. He can't reason for himself, put two and two together and come up with four. He thinks because he's had a little experience and asked some questions of others he knows it all and has the answers. He doesn't. He goes with the quick, easy, surface answer and thinks that's it. He totally dismissed the fact that Mims had no OTAs, minicamp or preseason last year, and missed a lot of time with injuries, then at the most important part of this offseason, he missed the first two weeks of installation of the offense. I don't care how talented he is, there's no way he could have caught up with that overnight and been running with the 1s and 2s once the rest of the offense was moving on to new and additional plays and aspects of the offense when he was still trying to learn the basics and working on his route running and regaining strength. Mims is improving on his route running and will continue to. He is a hard worker and wants to be great. I'll say it again...if there's not room for Mims in this offense and on this team as an important contributor, then we have the wrong OC and the wrong offensive system.
Yup. I mean the guy brought this all on himself with one tweet. He’s the sixth guy in the rotation….if he’s on the team. He didn’t hear that from anyone, he made that jump. Guaranteed if he never tweeted that nobody would be giving him any crap. It’s what brought him on my radar. Also, if you’re a beat guy and feel the need to offer up opinions on a public forum like Twitter, don’t cry when people come at you and disagree.
Mims is so clearly a talented, NFL-caliber receiver and he showed it last night. He's physical and athletic with seemingly a good head on his shoulders. This downfall is baffling especially since to the naked eye, there’s been no reason for it. I would be shocked if he’s actually cut but annoyed if he’s not cut and used less than a turd like Vyncint Smith or however you spell it.
Vyncint showed he belongs in the NFL as a depth WR and ST gunner last night. If NYJ cut him he will be signed.
Problem is up until last night, he hasn’t shown that he belongs. He's made mistake after mistake in every chance he’s gotten. That’s the difference between him and Mims.
0 chance Mims gets cut. If the Jets really don't want him on the roster, they will trade him. He showed he has value last night (and in his limited play in 2020). If route running and learning the playbook is the problem, I would say give him more time to do those things. The Jets are fine in 2021 with 1. Davis 2. Moore 3. Crowder 4. Cole 5. Berrios 6. Smith if they want. Allow Mims to continue to learn and improve. I definitely wouldn't give up on him yet, because the talent is there. If those other things click, he could be the WR1 we thought he could be.
the last WR spot is likely down to Berrios and V.Smith. I do like Berrios too but he’s quite redundant for slot purposes. Smith can contribute on ST as well and his speed is an asset. my issue with Mims was him assuming he was 6th and really didn’t take factors into account. This is still a young team and cutting a WR who really wasn’t struggling in camp and is in his second year without no camp last year would be real crazy, unless he was struggling. and by all reports, that hasn’t been the case. It seemed NOW that we know he was battling thru a case of food poisoning, he was working himself back into shape, into his playing weight. In fact he said he was at 217, thats 10 lbs over where he was last season. And yes he needs work on getting out the break on his routes better but there hasn’t been a peep he’s struggling just that he’s running with the 2’s and 3’s solely moreso on the talent in camp and he’s working himself back.
You are spot-on my friend. As soon as NYJ re-signed Crowder this choice became inevitable. Berrios has a lot in his favor including reports of good rapport with Zach, punt-return ability, and overall hustle. V Smith just keeps improving.
Ok so let’s say mims gets time over berrios. With moore coming back that’s still 5 wrs ahead of him based on last nights rotation. And that’s conservative, because actually they sent in maione to replace v Smith after he got shook up on that big stick over the middle. The fact that mims went to ask to be put on specials shows that he knows exactly what time it is too. He is very much on the bubble and the wr roster is going to be interesting to watch come cut down day.
I just got done watching the game. There is no way Mims will be cut. Cager on the other hand was awful.
If Mims is on the bubble then we need to question our coaching staff and front office. Simple as that. Smith is a terrible receiver that makes countless mistakes with good special teams qualities. Mims is a very good receiver with apparently some special teams value. One of those screams bubble player and it aint Mims. If he’s cut he will be picked up immediately by someone and he’ll be an above average player for them. I’d much rather him just be an above average player for us.
Just read this: https://www.yahoo.com/sports/robert-saleh-loved-seeing-denzel-113057417.html Saleh loved seeing Mims play angry. I like that. Every team should have a big angry receiver.
I think everyone is getting a little too caught up with depth chart rankings. I'll admit last night when I saw it took so long for Mims to get on the field even with 2 receivers who were supposedly ahead of him on the depth chart out due to injury, I considered it reason to be pessimistic about his chances. But Saleh has mentioned multiple times how they are incorporating the players into the offense. They have to build a package of plays that they can execute well for the playbook, like on an individual basis. I would guess that the more plays a receiver has in his portfolio, and does better than the other receivers, the higher he ranks on the actual depth chart. He didn't go in depth into how they are doing it but I would imagine that at this point, most of the plays in Mims' package would capitalize on his most obvious skills like fly routes and seams and fades, none of which we really saw last night. Last night was ball control, only high percentage plays and only the best receivers available for that specific play, and they scaled it back. He's not a great route-runner, and the plays he naturally excels at aren't high percentage plays for a rookie. So I wouldn't get hung up too much on how late he came into the game or that Malone came in before him, because it's probably that specific play or series of plays isn't even in Mims' portfolio.
