Early - before I heard about the food poisoning - and when Mims was definitely struggling, I offered the opinion that if the Jets were given a good offer - at least a high #3 next year - they should consider trading him. And I'd still do that trade...maybe. But as most here have pointed out, he possesses such great physical tools, and then combining that with the obvious effort he's making while keeping his mouth shut, those add up to "keeper" for me. I'd definitely keep him over Smith and Berrios, even though I like them both. We might see more of him against GB. Just a hunch that they're going to try opening up the playbook and stretching the field with some deeper routes, and that should get Mims involved. If not next week, the week after. So far, almost everyone is looking good though.
In reference to the bold, NO they do not. That's just your interpretation. You're a smart guy and a knowledgeable poster. I don't know why your view of Mims is so jaded and twisted, but it is. As byz said, you're reading too much into the depth chart. I'm certain that Mims is where he is right now because he was sick, missed the first two weeks of the installation of the offense, and is playing catch up in learning the offense, getting back into playing shape, working on his route running, and they didn't want to put a lot of pressure on him. There is no need to this year with all the other WR talent we have. Moving him down the depth chart doesn't mean they don't like him, only that he isn't up to snuff with the offense and his route running yet. You lower a guy like that on the depth chart and give him time to catch up and improve his route running, so he doesn't have the pressure of trying to play and having to think too much. It absolutely does not mean that they're down on Mims, that they're thinking of trading him, or that he is on the bubble. They have a lot of talent this year and can afford to give Mims time. The fact that you like Smith over Mims is mystifying. I would expect it out of some posters here, but not a smart, knowledgeable fan like you. Smith is truly a depth player. He drops more passes than he catches. Mims has #1 WR potential. He isn't behind Davis on the depth chart for nothing. With his blocking ability, speed, catch radius, and 50-50 ability, he is going nowhere.
I don't think they moved him down to send him a message. When a player gets demoted it's because he's not working hard, and done something to deserve it. Mims has been working very had and not done anything to deserve demotion. The depth chart means nothing at this point or in this offense. Saleh and LaFleur have said that they will change lineups based on matchups with their opponents each week. Mims missed the first two weeks of the installation of the offense. While he was playing catch up learning the offense and getting back into shape, the rest of the player were learning more of the offense and getting more reps. They're ahead of him in their knowledge of the offense and may be better route runners than he is at present. It's that simple. Neither Crowder, Berrios, nor V. White have the talent and potential that Mims does. I like all three of those guys, especially Crowder, but he's just a good/solid slot WR. That's valuable, but not as valuable as a #1 or #2 WR who can take it to the house on any play and who is also a huge asset on 3rd downs and in the red zone. IMO Mim has much better than a "fair" chance of making the team. I'm shocked that you think there's even a possibility that he won't make the team.
What do you mean Mims assumed he was 6th? How do you know what he assumed or that he assumed anything? He knew he was behind from being sick. That doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out. He also knew that he needed to work on his route running. That doesn't mean that he ever doubted his ability, thought that he was in danger of being cut or traded, or saw himself as only a backup WR. It's particularly puzzling in light of your other comments supporting Mims. What am I missing?
You know I’m big on Mims. So no push back from me. I would have giving you higher marks than a “like” for this thread but IMO your guy V. White doesn’t have a chance as he is not in the running LOL. It’s only “fair”
Keeping 7 WR is not unheard of either…I like Berrios and V Smith and J Smith too, but I don’t think any of them would be kept ahead of Mims…like it or not, being a second round pick gives you more than one year to show your stuff typically
We keep him. He's only in his second year. He has a great upside. Sent from my SM-G986U using Tapatalk
No matter how much you don’t like it, there were 4 receivers that got reps and targets from qb1 and another that was hurt that’s been considered one of the best players in camp so far. That puts mims firmly 6th. No amount of typed words changes that simple fact. That’s where he is, honestly I’m as surprised as anyone else that we are here right now. I thought he was a lock for wr2. But then they went out and added 3 wrs in free agency and the draft and 2 have been exclusively practicing as wr1 and wr2 the 3rd has exploded on the scene and crowder is one of the best slots in the league so here we are.whatever you think his potential is i don’t think jd or saleh don’t share your view. If they did he would be getting more time with the ones and they wouldn’t have added so heavy to the position in the off-season. The reason I think Smith is making this team is he’s a better specials player than mims. Boyer isn’t going to let him go without a fight. The bottom of the roster isn’t always about the most talented it’s about the right player.
I believe in 3 years when JD re-ups Zack's contract, Zack's top 3 WRs will be Denzel Mims, Elijah Moore, and whoever JD drafts in 2022.
You totally missed the point of what I was saying. You obviously don't like Mims or think he's that good. I have no problem with his being #6 right now because he still doesn't know the offense as well as the other WRs who are ahead of him due to his missing the first two weeks of OTAs. He's playing catch up. That's what you don't seem to understand and accept. We'll just have to agree to disagree, because I think your perspective/interpretation of this is totally wrong. If you are right then, then I think LaFleur, and perhaps Saleh may be badly mistaken, and perhaps not the right men to lead us forward. You don't abandon a 2nd round pick with the talent and potential that Mims has, especially when you're saying you will adopt your scheme to the talent on hand. I think JD has final control over who makes the team anyway, and while he may be hesitant to overrule Saleh, LaFleur and Boyer, IMO he should if that's what it takes. If not, then I'll lose respect for JD if Mims goes to another team and becomes a star.
Seriously… I think all of this “Mims on the bubble” talk is just media bullshit and click bait. Yes…he may be 5th in line after Davis, Crowder, Cole, and Moore, competing with Berrios, J Smith, V Smith and maybe a couple others like Cager and Malone, but he is catching up after missing time, and he’s a second round pick. He’s not going anywhere. Other considerations are that Cole is on a one year deal. Crowder just took a pay cut and may not be here next year either. I have a feeling we’re keeping 7 receivers…I just don’t see Mims on the bubble at all…he’s got too much potential to throw away
Is that having a meltdown or is that Hughes fleshing out the story for those who day to day never read anything longer than a Tweet?
While it is possible keeping 7 WRs it would be very hard. Looking at the roster construction if you do the bare minimum per position of 2 QBs, 3 RBs, 5 WRs, 3 TEs including Wesco, 9 OL, 9 DL, 5 LBs, 7 CBs including Hardee, 3 safeties, and 3 special team spots. That leaves 4 additional spots. One almost certainly goes to a 3rd TE (not counting Wesco as he is the FB) and another to a 6th WR. That leaves 2 spots for an additional corner, safety, rb, and DL. Adding a WR 7 is unlikely. Given how they run the ball likely a 4th RB. Then the last spot a 10th DL or maybe 9 until Curry comes off the pup list in week 2 or later. I don't see the room for a 7th WR. Keeping 6 is really hard. So much competition on this roster. Maybe they do go with 2 TEs plus Wesco with Yeborah on the PS as TE is the weakest position.
