I like Idzik's approach he signed a solid WR in Decker, replaced Howard with Giacomini, and he resigned a bunch of our own guys (Douzable, Colon, Cumberland, Folk) he brought in a much needed veteran QB to push Geno in Vick, and he's giving a young CB a chance to emerge as a solid starter like he did the year before which produced a few solid starters/rotation players (Allen, Davis, Harrison, Cumberland, Walls, Ellis)
We want to be bad, but somehow hope we will do good. Once we start to go in the right direction we wanna be bad. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Like everybody else I want a SB win, but I'll also want to see progress towards a long term goal of a winning franchise. What's getting lost on everybody is that our franchise is perennial joke to most people. I mean let's be honest guys, just how many times has a FA in their prime been signed by us outside of Curtis Martin and Kevin Mawae What happens to us is exactly what happened with fricking Vernon Davis, we get played and the player either signs someplace else or signs someplace else cheaper with a culture of winning. We get guys who are on the other side of their careers looking for that last pay day, sometimes we get lucky and hit gold and get some really nice performances out of the older vets, but mostly we get Ronnie Lott's. The Jets and their fans are in a nasty catch 22 with FA right now. We want to win but to win we need players, we can't get the players in FA without overpaying, overpaying to get players leads to being locked into guys that might not work out. But now that we've overpaid them we can't get rid of them. Now couple that with consistantly, historically, bullshit drafting and you havet he NY Jets, Browns, Jags, etc. I'm not saying we shouldn't go after FA, but dang it we have to start trying to be selective about our FA's AND start getting some value from our draft picks. Last year draft was an unusual one for us with almost every pick getting some PT, some fairing better than others. We need to do that again this year and next year get a few more choice FA while locking up our players that have grown. While I hated losing Howard, because he was the exact type of young home grown and raised prospect that we need more of. But caving into the demands a "solid" player now would only lead to us down that road of overpaying for everything again, including our own guys. At some point the merry-go-round has to stop and we have to have players who want to be here at the right prices or for the right reasons. We didn't "win" FA this year and that's ok. Let's see what we can shake out of the bargain bin make these draft picks and get some more guys in. Then once the post draft cuts/trades happen see what else we can shake out after the desperate teams have finished sucking up every piece of obvious in sight. Just like last year I think we are going to surprise people. I think Rex is going to coach up those kids at corner and everybody is going to look back at this and feel silly about the teeth gnashing. I mean Milliner was benched 3 times and then finished up playing as our defacto number 1 corner, AND he did a fantastic job of it. Look at Kyle Wilson, he finally started getting it and is a solid slot CB. Let's see what Walls and co can do this year and if it doesn't work out then you have another shot at paying Revis too much money again next season. Lastly I'm going to say that I'm tired of us chasing corner backs, it's almost like a freaking fetish. I wouldn't "mind a safety. I would have loved for us to have grabbed Byrd but I think it would have taken 8.5-9 mil and with his injury history that's exactly the sort of contract that we have to stop giving out. In short I want to win without the Jets being the leagues "payday bitch".
Re: the first paragraph The Jets signed numerous free agents in their prime. I think you meant the Jets haven't signed many free agents in their prime who panned out. BINGO! Free agency is very, very dicey. Also, while he did not play at an All-Pro level, Lott was actually good with the Jets in '93. Too late for me to reply to the rest of the post. For the record, I am totally fine with the Jets offseason moves.
I was once one of the most rabid Jets fans you would`ve met. Always wearing Jets gear, bumper stickers, plate frames, house was painted green & white, then added black when the Jets did, never ever missing a home game from 1984-2003/04, etc..., etc...., etc.... I was a nutcase fan. I wanted SB trophies like any fan would want. After 98, it all went down hill for me being the nutcase fan I was. Thats another story as to why I dwindled down as a fan. To make it short, The Fans Get Nothing when the team wins except price increases all around. It`s just a game in the end and will always be just a game. No one cares anymore that the Seahawks won last year. No one. Same would happen here like it did 45 years ago. No one cares anymore except those making big $$$ from it. As for what I would`ve wanted as a fan? Consistency in winning and always having that chance to win another SB. Never being counted out year after year. Like the Steelers, Cowboys and other perennial winners. The damn Jets can`t even win their own division once every 4 or 5 years. They only won it 2 times since the NFL/AFL merger. It`s sad and pathetic. Then this new stadium sharing fiasco they got in. Ultimately, the Jets can suck year after year to me if they had their own home to suck in. As we see though, the Giants already have a trophy displayed in their new house the Jets and their fans helped pay for half of. More sad and pathetic outcomes for the Jets. Joke? Thats the Jets. Their entire fanbase has been facelifted for what it is now. UNSOLDOUT. That was never the case. They always sold out regardless of no-shows at the games. Now they an overpriced joke of a circus act, and that continues on with the Vick signing.
1) OK point taken; I guess I misinterpreted your comments on Decker, so I apologize for that. My bad. 2) I just said that Giacomini is a downgrade from Howard, I didn't say anything about the contracts of those players. To me, RT is important enough of a position to overpay to keep an above average and improving player (Howard) instead of saving a few pennies by signing an inferior player. That was my point. 3) Cromartie had an off year last season because he was dealing with a nasty injury. When healthy he's still a Pro Bowl caliber player (he actually still made the Pro Bowl last year)....a healthy Cro this year would be much better, in all likelihood, than anything we have opposite Milliner. I guess my overall point is that I think we are pretty close to being a legit super bowl contender, so I do not mind overpaying (when we have so much cap space to work with) to fill our holes. I would overpay as much as I needed to, if I were Idzik, to fill the hole at CB opposite Milliner, and to get a quality RT. Then I would draft the best WR available in the 1st round. That would fill all our significant holes.
Considering we may now have a left handed throwing QB, the RT/blind side might be even more important. _
