Play calling was hit or miss, with the miss ratio higher than the hit. While some of the plays were imaginative, our run game was very anemic despite us being tops in the league. I hate when we run the football out of shotgun because it becomes very predictable and less efficient because of our terrible passing attack. Teams were loading the box while we were in shotgun and we would still run it because that was the only way we could. I liked the read-option plays (not to be confused with zone-read) with CJ and CI out there, but we didn't seem to run that enough. Geno smith not being able to operate efficiently under center also hurt us. When MV7 came in, the play action game was actually a viable option. I'd prefer we ran the ball outta more I-formation or two back sets, this way giving the runner a lead blocker which Connor filled nicely this year. Too often, I saw ivory sprinting to the outside when we ran out of shotgun for a short gain. Things like this make me question MM because we rarely seemed to play to our strengths, and even when we did and the opposition caught on, we failed to adapt (first Miami game). Still, he is the best OC we've had hear in my tenure as a jets fan even though that's not saying much. If we can upgrade, we should, if he's the best available I wouldn't be distraught keeping him.
Those plays took forever to develop and had our running backs running 10 yards just to get back to the LOS. Hate that our running game was based around it.
I think the vast majority of the problems on O were a combination of poor personnel and FO decisions favoring certain players, specifically Smith. Once the Qb competition was faked in camp, I don't think Bill Walsh could have done much. Smith obviously sucks in the red zone, when the field compresses and the pressure is on. What calls should the OC be making to overcome that? Marty was the best OC we've seen around here for a long time. That doesn't even, by itself, make him average, though. I think that covers it.
