If Holmgren wanted to come to the Jets, they should can Bowles right now, and if he wanted to be GM, can Macc. Frankly, I would love to have him come in as the Pres. of Football Ops and oversee a complete rebuild.

I think getting a big name, proven winner coach is part of this tanking plan. If we get the number one pick, and there is a potential franchise QB available, then that plus $80m in cap space make us a very desirable location. A lot of coaches would be interested in us under those circumstances. I would hope we get Payton, because I think he is the best coach and most innovative offensive mind available. I don't think he would want total control and I think he could work w/Maccagnan (who I like and who I think is going to stay)

And examples of this "big name proven head coach" would be who?
Gruden and cowher don't count, we have been through that too many times. Pulling from the college ranks? Hasn't been very successful.

There was an article a few months back I'm trying to find that broke down the winning percentages of retread head coaches vs first time head coaches and first time hires we're significantly more successful. Of course it's rare for a great head coach to become available.
