If Fant is our swing OT this year, do you still think he’s worth the 11M cap hit? I never suggested we cut Fant as soon as we draft Ekwonu, only if it turns out he becomes the odd man out this year, we can easily move on from him with minimal repercussions.
pretty sure Connor Rogers said he would be his OT 2 after Sewell as well. (he also said that he has Icky graded almost a round and half above how he had Becton graded iirc)
For all the draft gurus who are we looking at in round 2? I keep hearing how deep the draft is and the Jets have two number 2's who should we be targeting.
Draft part of this is brutal. I’d sooner trade out of 4 than take a CB/OT or a 23 year old who had one good year.
It's really hard to say because it's such a crapshoot with 34 picks happening beforehand. If an article I posted earlier in this thread is to be believed, there's a decent chance someone like Linderbaum, Karlaftis, or Nakobe Dean could slip into the 2nd round, and if any of those guys are there, they should probably be the pick. If we don't go OL at 4 or 10, someone like Bernhard Raiman (OT, Central Michigan) would be a good option. If we want some more help in the secondary, Daxton Hill (S, Michigan), Kaiir Elam (CB, Florida), Andrew Booth Jr. (CB, Clemson), Lewis Cine (S, Georgia), Jaquan Brisker (S, Penn State), and Kyler Gordon (CB, Washington) would all be really good options. I have reservations that Hill, Elam, Booth, or Cine would be there at 35 or 38 but it's possible. If we don't take an EDGE at 4 or 10 (which I would highly doubt), Boye Mafe (Minnesota), David Ojabo (Michigan), or Arnold Ebiketie (Penn State) would all be good options. If they want an IDL, Travis Jones (UConn) or Perrion Winfrey (Oklahoma) would probably be our options. If they don't take a WR at 4 or 10, Jahan Dotson (Penn State), Skyy Moore (Western Michigan), Christian Watson (North Dakota State), and George Pickens (Georgia) could be names to watch. Like I said, it's such a crapshoot that there's a decent chance that all of the players I just listed are gone by 35 but I think a decent amount of them will still be there. Plus, it depends on what we do at 4 and 10. If we take KT/JJ, the EDGE's might be off the board, same with WR's or OT's. Other than the 3 I listed at the top (Linderbaum, Karlaftis, Dean), my names to hope fall would be Daxton Hill, Bernhard Raimann, and Travis Jones.
Terrifying. I have a really really bad feeling we're going to end Thursday night with a swing tackle and no edge rusher.
Just because we take Ekonwu at #4 doesn't mean they don't get a good Edge out of this draft. In fact, aside from Hutchinson, is there really a slam dunk Edge worth the #4 pick? IDK, but if Douglas feels the best "bang for the buck" is to add a stud OL who can play tackle or G and give them an insurance policy in case Becton doesn't perform to his ability, I'm okay with that. There are plenty of good DEs that can be had with the 2, 3, or even 4th pick.
not gonna call myself a guru but travis jones should be a target. outside of that depends what we did with 4 and 10 but if a WR is needed christian watson or johan dotson should be there. if we got a WR and edge already a guy like dax hill would be nice.
I was on this merry-go-round yesterday so I'll spare everyone part 2... but I just can't justify in my head taking an OL at 4 with edge rushers available when that OL will either start on the bench or force a current starter to the bench where they'll be eating up cap space.
Especially if we're happy with KT or JJ, there's a very good chance one will be there at 10. The Giants probably take one at 7 after taking an OT at 5. I don't envision Carolina, Atlanta or Seattle taking the other. What will be interesting is whether there's a trade up market for OT. NYG & Carolina have a high probability of going for an OT. Does anybody try to get in front of them to take the best or second best OT?
No no no. If Ekwonu is picked at 4, he is the day 1 plug and play LT. Dude is better than Fant and is a way better prospect than Becton or any of the other 2020 OTs.
I promised I wouldn’t get on this carousel again but here I am. So what do you do with the two guys you already have? Cut Fant who was more than serviceable and already proved he can do the job? Bench Becton and have him eat a $6 million hole in your pocket? No matter what you do, if the pick is Icky then you aren’t maximizing the asset when you’re looking at the big picture. The gap between Icky and our current starting tackles is not even close to as wide as the gap between KT or even JJ and our second starting edge.
fant is 29 and on his final year. we can trade him or keep him for a year (as insurance) and let him walk. or if becton doesn't pan out we can resign fant and move becton
If he's your franchise LT for the next decade, then you've maximized the asset. Fant is a journeyman off an up year, and Becton is a question mark. Maybe you can flip Becton for a current or future 2nd. When you can pick a premium player at a premium position you do it. Nobody should be comfortable with locking up a Fant+Becton combo long term.
& if he plays well & walks, that's how you actually earn compensatory picks (by having good players that other teams want).
Fant would go to the bench as their swing tackle like he was with Seattle and let him walk if Becton pans out. If Becton sucks, Fant is the guy and you move on from Becton in the offseason. Dane Brugler, an NFL Draft Analyst for The Athletic said on a podcast (paraphrasing here) "The Jets aren't talked enough as a landing spot for Ekwonu... Becton might have put on the Jets uniform for the last time in his career". In the nightmare scenario the draft board falls: 1 - Walker 2 - KT/Huch 3 - Remainder of KT/Hutch (John McClain said there is no way Houston passes on Walker or Hutch) I'm not taking Sauce and I don't love the value of JJ over Ekwonu there. For 2022, OT is not a need, but in 2023 it can be a MASSIVE need if Fant walks or regresses and Becton sucks.
