Still not a great argument Even if 1st rounders were the starting QB's on over 50% of all the Super Bowl Champions, it still may be deceiving since we don't have their stats for that year. Somoeone like Dilfer got paid not to lose games. McMahon without that Bears defense was laughable. Aikman's success was tied to running game. The other side of the argument ... Favre and Elway were superstars who carried their teams into the playoffs on their shoulders. It doesn't start with the QB it starts with a Superstar. The only superstar in this draft is Reggie Bush http://media.putfile.com/bigreggiestyle
Elway was not the Superstar on the Denver teams that won the SB's, Davis was. While that actually helps your argument, I believe you are completely wrong. While teams can win 1 SB without a great QB any great franchise that had more than a 1 Year run had a great QB. Most SB teams were run by a great Quarterback and having a great QB increases your odds of having a great team tremendously. Now you can get a great QB out of the first round but just like every other position, the odds go down of getting a great player after each draft pick.
Not to be on either side but - 1986 reg season - won sb Elway 3485 yds 19 td - 257 yds rushing 1 td Winder 789 yds - 9 tds 1987 reg season - won sb Elway 3198 yds - 19 tds - 304 yds 6 tds Winder 741 yds - 6 tds Not much help from the running game all Elway 97 and 98 when Elway was old - Davis step up 1997 Reg Season - won sb Elway 3635 yds - 27 tds Davis 1750 yds - 15 tds 1998 Reg Season - won sb Elway 2806 yds - 22 tds Davis 2008 yds - 21 tds Elway was still the best guy on the team in 1997 Davis was the man in 1998
Here are some other first round QB picks that were SB winning QB's. Earl Morrall, Len Dawson, Steve Young, Bob Greise, Ben Rothlesberger, Trent Dilfer, Jim McMahon, Phil Simms, Doug Williams. The SB has been dominated by great QB and 1st round QB's. There are exceptions but most of the exceptions like Starr, Montana, Brady and Favre were great QB.
I agree that Bush is... and will remain a superstar BUT!!..... even Pete Carroll is on record saying that if he had to choose 1.. (not paraphrasing.......... Lienart or Carson Palmer) he would choose Palmer to be his QB.. (physically) and Lienart would be his choice as a winner.. i.e. if it comes down to winning football games.. he would choose Lienart. Palmer is pretty much a superstar after his play this past year. that being said...... I have a feeling that there will be 3 superstars at least in the coming years... Bush, Lienart and I just cannot see how Vince Young will fail with his maturity, physical skills and desire...
Here are my thoughts about the QB spot. 1. In general I'm not in favor of taking a QB, though I admit that if Leinart's there at #4, its basically a no-brainer. 2. I think you have to give Chad one more shot. If you don't trust him to comeback than he should have been cut last month. No one's doubting his ability, but his health. 3. I'm not sold on Cutler or Vince Young for various reasons. 4. With the state of this offensive line, I think a rookie QB would get killed out there. 5. I think the Jets season will play out in one of two ways. Either the Chad will bounce back and the Jets won't need a QB or Chad will bomb and the team will be in prime position to nab Brady Quinn a year from now.
Davis was the man both in 97 and 98. Davis may have had the greatest playoff run in football history in 97: Jacksonville: 184 Yrds 2TD KC: 101 Yards 2TD Pitt: 139 Yards 1TD GNB: 157 Yards 3TD Elway 1997 Playoffs: Jacksonville: 16 for 24 223 yards 1TD KC:10 for 19 170 Yards 0 TD's Pit: 18 for 31 210 Yards 2TD 1 INT GNB: 12 for 22 123 Yards 0TD's 1 INT 1 Rushing TD.
I know i am going to get bashed for this comment, but here it goes. I think that we fill all of our holes this draft, and sure up our lines. Maybe even trade down and pick up an additional pick next year (rd 1 or 2), then draft the best QB we can get at our draft pick next year, or trade up to get Brady Quinn. I dont think that we should draft a QB this year,
Playoffs happen after the regular season. That's why the stats say reg. season. The team has to do good during the reg. season to make it to the playoffs. Davis was great in the playoffs he was good for 3 years I think maybe four, Elway was good for 10 or 11 sorry at work cant do research.
Elway had an outstanding year in 97 and Denver even though they went 12 & 4 was a wild card team that year, KC went 13 & 3. Davis also had an outstanding year in 97 1750 Yards, 15 TD's and a 4.7YPC in 15 games was pretty much the standard that year. Elway was allready 37 in 97 and while he had a great year, much better than in 98, Davis's emergence helped extend his carrier by taking a ton of pressure off of him. Denver as a team ranked 16th in passing and 1st in rushing in 97, although I agree Elway did have a great year in 97. You could argue the 97 regular season either way, the truth is they both were huge contributors to that season.
Not bashing you, but there are some serious problems with that logic. 1) QBs typically take the longest to develop. Taking one next year as opposed to this year, simply lengthens the rebuilding process, as our QB of the future would likely not be able to make a serious impact until 2009-2010 (Assuming he sits one year and experiences growing pains the next year). 2)There's no guarantee that we'll be in a position to grab an impact QB next year. We have a fairly easy schedule, a young, hungry team, and a decent defense. If we can fill in the O-line and Pennington or Ramsey can play adequately this year, we can potentially be picking in the 8-15 range. If that's the case, we may not be in a position to even come close to drafting Quinn(even with a trade up). If you have a high pick (like we do) and QBs that you believe have franchise potential are available, you have to take them when you can.
Hey i'll take a healthy Brodie Croyl for sure!!!! But that's the rub....him staying healthy...Whitehurst wouldn't be bad either. Anyone on here from the West Coast? Seen Fresno States guy Pinegar...Pat Hill runs a very pro-style offense and he's put a number of quality guys out there, david carr and Trent dilfer come to mind....He's a scrapper and a hell of a QB. I have seen him 4 times Live including two bowl games and I think he has something...maybe not a blue chipper like leinart but he might be good in a year or two and he can be gotten in the 6th or 7th round...there are a couple of guys like that. I sure hope they know enough about Penny's shoulder by draft time though...that would really help with a decision. Thoughts??? Peace! The Mezz
I don't necessarily think that we need to draft a QB in round one, but I think we do need to draft one. Call it depth for the new system, for lack of a better label. But I agree that we have too much core talent to fill to be going blockbusters on a top 5 pick quarterback. Not with this crop.
I've always thought you guys were going to get one of our QB's here in SD: Brees or Rivers early on. I just heard so much talk about trade going down over there with your crazy media guys that I thought it was true. Considering you have our former QB Coach Brian Schottenheimer (who is a fine pick up by the way). Let me ask you, did you guys ever want any of them to begin with? Just curious. Also, what are your thoughts about Brett Favre or maybe Matt Schaub...how about Kerry Collins?
we dont HAVE TO draft a QB. this yr we find out if chad can ever play again and if ramsey deserves to ever play again. plain and simple. we COULD draft a QB and it would make ALOT of sense. or we could fill every other hole, wait to see if any of these question marks yields positive results, and if not. we go through hellfire and brimstone to get a QB through the FA or Draft next yr. i'm not completely against your but with ramsey signed QB is not an immediate need. from a franchise perspective yes, but thats the long haul and it can be addressed next yr. after serious questions are answered.
I agree. I have to admit, there are a BUNCH of guys at A LOT of positions of need in this draft that it seems that we , regardless of who we pick, will or should, may have a stud for years. However, we seem to be looking at a draft that MAY constist of 2 franchise QBs. Three if you throw in Cutler. There have been COUNTLESS threads supporting all 3. Next year going to have that type of QB? Is Quinn that caliber of QB? Maybe but if we have a chance to get one of the 2 guys that seem to have that potential then we just HAVE to make that happen. Sink or swim at least we tried.
Unfortunately, the chances are almost nil that that will be the case - we're talking three weeks from today, and supposedly he was only throwing 15 yard passes two weeks ago.
