This is obviously not the popular sentiment on this thread, but I don't think you just toss Darnold out. I do agree that at this point what he's shown is that he's a backup. That said, I think he still has potential to exceed that. The two years that should've been development years for him have been virtually wasted because of Gasen and the sub-par talent. If he has a competent CS and improved talent he can be a successful starting QB still. However, I think they need to draft a better QB. But it's unlikely that any rookie QB is going come in and be better than Darnold is right now. I say re-work his contract so that it's in line with the level of contribution he'll likely make and keep him to allow sitting the rookie.
If you trade down to somewhere in the low 20s, both of these guys maybe off the table. It’s risky though as well either way. I do think they need to grab a Qb in round 1 or 2. They can’t just be satisfied going into next year with only Sam.
I'm predicting the Jets trade Darnold and draft Zach Wilson with the #2 pick in the 2021 draft. They will also have a bunch of other high draft picks and free agents signings. It will be a whole new team next season.
I’m confused. How does only scoring 16 points constitute coming back from a 20 point deficit? If there is another point in this thread I’m missing, I’m not able to see it with this dumbass declaration in its way.
It depends upon what kind of offense they plan to run. If they plan to draft a QB who can use his legs like Fields, Wilson, or Lance, then Tyrod Taylor might be the best option. If they plan on taking Trask and building around him, then a solid game manager like Colt McCoy would be better. If the Lions decide to move on from Stafford or the Raiders to move on from Carr and have a reasonable price on their QB, then one of them would be a better option, regardless of what style of offense they hope to run eventually with the rookie (assuming they draft a rookie to sit and learn for a year).
Sorry, trading for Prescott makes zero sense. He's not that good, costs way too much, and the Jets aren't ready to compete yet. They're at least another year or two away, maybe longer. This is the right time to add a rookie QB, regardless if he starts his rookie season or sits for a year or two. It's not the right time to trade for a Prescott. That would be a move made out of desperation and panic, and those never work out.
Darnold haters galore! Name me a 23 year old QB playing lights out without a running back, TE, and multiple WRs. Russell had beastmode, Ben had Bettis to start off their careers, Hall of Famers... you need to pieces around you when you’re young. Not a single Young QB has ever taken a team far or made them competitive early, except for running style QBs like RG3 and Lamar Jackson. Dude Josh Allen looked terrible his first two years...he missed wide open receivers in the end zone early this year. But guess what the Bills built around him...enabling him to grow into his abilities. I keep telling you JD rug-pulled Sam. Took away Robbie for Perriman. Sam and Perriman are just not on the same page. But somehow Crowder he can make it work. Robbie he made it work last year. Blame JD and Gase guys...
I know that it is quite frustrating watching this team on Sunday’s. I personally can not wait for Gase and his entire staff to be fired because they are terrible. It is a terrible coaching staff. We will immediately get better once they get fired. However, to build this team the right way we must first build this offensive line. The offensive line is paramount. With that being said, we should not be concerned with drafting wide receivers but focus on the line. Case in point. Do we remember Andrew Luck? The inability for the Colts to protect him cut his career short. Luck could have been a phenomenal QB. Believe me Darnold is no where near luck but for any QB to be successful you need a line. Look at how well the Bills are playing this year. Look at how well their line is playing for their QB. That line moves people and protects. That’s why they won the AFC East. Let’s get this line going and let’s get someone who can coach for a change!
I agree as well, don’t think Fields or Wilson is worthy of a 2nd pick. As we already know we have an extra 1st rd and 3rd round picks, I think if JD could get creative for trading a 2nd pick for another 2nd rd pick and extra pick, the Jets could have the Jets could still build 6 impact prospects within the first 3 rounds.
Hear me out please Sam Darnold: excels in the hurry up - They rarely run hurry up excels on the sprint out - They rarely run sprint out plays excels as a running type qb when given the chance or makes the choice to run - they hardly ever run RPO's has been banged around for 3 straight seasons, mostly due to being behind some historically bad O-Lines has had hs caliber receivers most of his career and never any speed at RB's. has had slithers of TE help when Herndon is not off practicing how to be invisible Entered the league under head coach Todd Bowles, and graduated to Adam Gase - arguably 2 of the worst HC's in NFL history, who both hired incompetent OC's or were incompetent themselves at calling the offensive plays. I mean look at the litany of issues with this organization between the previous regimes & FO's, and this present CS. How can anyone have the first clue what Sam really is or how good he can become given proper coaching an NFL caliber talent on offense? Not saying he is Aaron Rodgers. Also not saying he is Mike Glennon. I just have a problem using the 2nd pick in the draft on a QB that's not TL. They need too much. They need inside OL big time, some friggin speed @ RB, WR's who can catch (and get rid of that stiff Brashard Perriman who has hands of stone), a pass rusher, a cornerback, LB and CB's - basically everything! I can't lie, it was sweet beating Baker Overrated and knocking them basically out of the playoffs, but not at the expense of the future. They still have to make the coaching change one week from tomorrow if not sooner. Problem is, Chris Johnson is so dopey that if they manage to win next week, he could spin this into giving Gase another year and that is the scariest thing of all. If this happens and Gase is back next year, I am with you guys and am done with this team.
it also comes down to the pay. We have the chance to reset the QB pay clock now and if Wilson is similar to Darnold, you do it.
QBs get overdrafted. That's a fact of life in the NFL. If you want the best prospect you can get, then you have to bite the bullet and take him when you can. Trade down and you may have no chance. They can't afford to roll with Darnold another year or two, and they can't afford NOT to get a QB. Better to waste one draft pick and at least try to find the answer. One player taken at #2 is not going to make that much of a difference if he fails. Sure it will hurt and set the team back a little, but it would hurt them more to miss out on a very good QB.
I wouldn't trade anything higher than a 4th round draft pick, but I'd love to have a Stafford or a Derek Carr. Then the Jets could trade down from #2, and still take a QB lower, give him time to learn and develop by letting him sit for a season or two behind one of those QBs.
Wilson is not better than Darnold as a prospect. You’re almost crazy to think that. He has to put on atleast 15-20 pounds to withstand NFL level Qb hits. Nice college QB, clocked will be cleaned in the NFL.
Nonsense. Yes, the OL can be better and should be better, but the present OL has actually played well over the last month. It's mainly the OGs that need to be upgraded. Becton, Fant and McGovern are fine for now. If they add Thuney in FA and draft an OG, they should have a very good OL in 2021. They don't need to completely forsake drafting a WR and draft nothing but OL. Sorry, but that's just wrong. Crowder and Mims are not enough at WR. QBs need reliable WR who can consistently get open, catch the ball, and move the chains just as much as they need OL who give them time to go through their progressions. The Jets don't have that now.
He did not pull of anything, he was just there for the ride. If Flacco was the starting QB for these past two games, the Jets might have won by multiple scores. It's absolutely amazing what the bar is for this guy because he's been laughably bad in his career. Stop making excuses for this kid, he is not good.
I agree with all the obstacles you listed that Darnold has had to deal with, and agree also that you can't possibly determine how good or bad he can be because of all that, but because you can't determine if he actually is good enough to be a guy to take you to a SB at least, you have to draft someone who you do have confidence can be that guy. The only question is: do you try to keep Darnold to compete with him and maybe be the starter to enable the rookie to sit and learn, or do you get rid of Darnold and sign another vet? I think it makes more sense to keep Darnold as long as you can rework his contract.
Read the next two sentences? The Jets just beat two playoff teams and Sam contributed. He also contributed to "beating" the Raiders two weeks before that. All I am saying is that if your going to make the case that Darnold is the worst quarterback to walk the earth right this second is not the most appropriate time to be claiming that. This tidal wave of hatred for the kid has been getting out of control the last several weeks (my opinion) and amusingly the hatred has gotten worse lately as Darnold has not only done nothing wrong but gone 2-0 as a starter. Thats not rational. But I'm assuming its because some got swept up in the savior Trevor fervor. So they are now venting that disappointment at Darnold. That is also not rational but it is at least understandable.
