I dont know if you have actually seen him do it but its true. Saw him brake one over Rhodes head on an interception he missed. He was in position to make the catch but he missed. Rhodes came to the sidelines and Westhoff went off broke the cane over his helmet and stood there screaming at him.. Five minutes later he had another cane. I wonder if there is like a guy in charge of the equipment bag that has all his canes in it . Too funny
I've heard Bill Belichick say that about special teams coaches. Might only be because that's where he got his own start.
Those bringing up his health don't know enough about it. He had his femur replaced last year. No more cancer. Before that, they were just going in and removing it each time it popped up, just delaying the procedure. Then, he got the metal prosthetic. The controversy about him coming back early this year was with his rehab. He was supposed to have ~2 months more of rehab before coming back but said "Screw it, I am THAT badass" and came back from his rehab early. With an offseason of rehabbing it, he will not be having health problems anymore, unless there's something new, which would be just as likely to happen to anyone else his age.
Ok, listen... they seem to be pretty high on Scotty jr, right? So if they're so concerned about Westhoffs health, you make him the Head Coach, with Scotty as assistant head coach/coach in waiting. Scotty gets exp, Westy gets to coach. Best case, West stays healthy and we kick some ass, worse case, Westy gets sick, and Schotty takes over ANYWAY, and much more smoothly. It's a win-win!!!
His health is definitely a consideration, you dont know what you dont know. You sound like that idiot poster who keeps telling his sister she is wrong for listening to her doctor instead of him.
Not sure I'd trust Westhoff to lead the team at this point. He's been a Special Teams coach forever, and I just don't see him making an easy transition into head coaching.
Certainly can't argue with his resume, so i think, out of respect, they should give him an interview.
People are bringing up his health because it is a buzzword. Someone else said it and they parrot it without knowing the situation. I explain the situation. How, in any way, shape or form, does this make me like a brother telling a sister to stop listening to a doctor? If anything the people just saying "health! omg!" without any other description (Most likely because they don't know any further) are the uninformed, whereas the person that fully described the situation is the informed one. Wacky outlook you have there, JC.
...and you sound like the type of guy that'll wear his Nikes and drink the punch like a good little boy. Or are you a member of the AMA? You may already be blind like Paul, but you're still acting like Saul.
I thought everyone on this board for the last two weeks were sreaming for a guy who is an established head coach with a track record. That all changes for Westhoff? What was so great about the Jets special teams lat year anyway?
Just what I'm thinking. I understand his health being a question mark, but if your going to interview guys from within he should have been at the top. I kinda thought when his name was not even brought up, it was a bit of a slap in the face.
That's what I've been saying all along. As for Westhoff, he did get his shot once before with the Jets. He was interviewed, along with the other coordinators, when Herm left town. He lost out in the race to Mangini. I wouldn't flip out if he were chosen, but I wouldn't be confident either.
Agreed. Not only were they unspectacular, in the last few games they were a downright liability. Westhoff - over - Schotty Jr. is as far as I'd ever go.
Westoff would be a great choice as HC. Experience,Great rapport with owner and players. Great motivator and teacher. He is already signed for two more years .
Westhoff's body of work is way too big to be judged by the STs performance in one awful 5 game span, when the entire team- starting with the HC, seemed to lose its head.... If he had only been coaching for a couple years, I could see the point- but he's been the best at what he does for years and years.
It is a good point, but I think it's clean slate time, not that anyone in the organization will ever admit it.
Westhoff is a brilliant ST coordinator. I think he has tons of the X's and O's knowledge. That's why he's always so successful at creating an outstanding KR game. Pretty much everyone who returns kicks under him makes the Pro Bowl. I once heard an interview with Leon, I think, where he was saying something about how the KR team is in a certain position to fool the kicking team into covering one way while the KR team ends up doing something else. It was very complicated and I don't remember the details, but I walked away thinking Westhoff is at an elite level when it comes to X's and O's knowledge. Not to mention what everyone knows about his fiery nature on the sidelines, waving his cane around and screaming. The more I think about it, the more he's nearing the top of my wish list for HC candidates.
