I don't think he gets a pass at all. His unit was not prepared, especially after Ginn's plan was already known.
Who cares who gets blamed? It is a team sport, and the team didn't win. The Defense did everything but score. Bottom line we were in position to win the game, and we failed to do it. My biggest concern with the game is why are we putting the game in a shaky rookies hands instead of the teams offensive strength? That should be the focus of question. Either Rex or Schotty made a bad judgement call on this. However, it is a team sport, and everyone loses together. There are many times in a game where we can say, hey, if this did or didn't happen we win. If Miller had returned both those kicks would we be saying he made 2 great plays, or would we be saying the opposing team didn't contain. If Ronnie Brown had fumbled for a TD, would we not be saying great take away by.... Bottom line is we could have won anyway, and is the mark of a good team. I hate fucking bye weeks. Now we have to wait 2 fucking weeks.
Reading through a lot of the post you would think every one BUT our ST's screwed up. As I mentioned in a few other posts I lay this mess squarely on the ST unit. 14 points in less than 10 minutes. Most of it was lack of execution by the players, but MW still bears part of the responsibility. BUT, this is one part of out team that for years has always been well ranked and well run. I would want no other coach running this unit. He gets a pass from me, no questions asked.
It tells me a lot about the direction of this team, we spot them 21 points (fumble return & 2 ST returns) in the second 1/2 and we still had a chance to win at the end. We still need some polishing and fine tuning but there really is hope.
You lay the loss on ST but unfortunately for that little theory the game didn't end after the ST letdowns. The Jets were in position to win the game inside the Mia 15 with plenty of time on the clock and the Jets OC brainfarted.
Anyone who would roast Westhoff hasn't got a clue. The man is one of the best ST's coaches in the modern era, maybe the very best. He gets and deserves a pass here, but since this MB is so into the blame game (which is different from raosting a guy) Westhoff is as responsible as anyone else on the Jets. As someone said, Westhoff is very well loved by Jet fans. If we had another ST coach, the guy would be getting dragged through broken glass naked on this board. I was really just trying to make a point. Posters here are not very objective. They will rip any coach or player they already have an opinion on whether it is deserved or not. They will defend their "favorites" no matter what. For players and coaches they don't like, they will rip them to shreads for little to no reason.
jeez, no one is safe on this team. A lot of our special teams players were out and the second ko return we had him wrapped up at the twenty but couldnt execute tackles. Tackling didn't look fantastic yesterday at some points. Westhoff is the best you could ask for really.
You aren't the sharpest knife in the drawer, are you? This thread was to make a point about ripping both some players and coaches on this team a new asshole, and why it's a stupid thing to do. But you aren't alone, half the posters in this thread didn't get it either. This team was ready to play. Schotty started out with the same conservative game plan he used very successfully against Oakland last week. When it didn't work, he opened it up in the second half, but he's an idiot because he was conservative in the first half. Then when he let Sanchez throw late in the game, he should have run the ball. It doesn't matter WHAT Schotty does... the idiots will be out to hang him either way. Then there was the idiot that started a thread saying Greene isn't TJ because he fumbled the f'n ball? Then in another the loss was all on Woodhead? Half the posters in this forum are fucking CLUELESS, but they have big mouths, and turn every thread into personal attacks. This site was a whole lot better two and three years ago. I wish I had a site to go to where there are real Jet fans who can discuss football without all the BS that goes on here. In the maentime, I will make due with TGG, as there are still some really good folks to talk with, but the noise level is starting to get unbearable.
This is a completely inaccurate assessment of what actually happened in the first half on Sunday. Go look at the play by play listing of the Oakland game and this game and you'll see that there was no similarity at all between the two gameplans. The Jets passed as often in the first half against the Dolphins as they did in the entire Raider game. They had 12 2nd down plays against Oakland in the first half with an average distance to go of 6 yards and they ran the ball 10 times in 12 plays. They had 14 2nd down plays against Miami in the first half with an average distance to go of 6.6 yards and they ran the ball 7 times in those 14 plays. The Jets game plan just wasn't remotely similar to what had worked the week before. The Jets came out of the first half without a TD primarily because they didn't invest in the run enough to establish any kind of momentum on the Fins. Here are the possessions they had in the first half and why they broke down: 1. 3 and out with TJ gaining 1 yard on 1st down and then the Jets passing on 2nd and 9 and 3rd and 5 and then punting. 2. Two runs for a first down followed by a 1st down pass (why?), a 2nd down run for 0 and then a 3rd down pass and punt. 3. 1st down flea flicker (what? Against a weaker team at home and you're gimmicking at the beginning of drive 3, why sell out your team like that?) Pass on 3rd and 1 (what? Well it worked but still what kind of call is that for a team committed to running to protect a rookie QB?) End around to Cotchery on 2nd and 7 which goes for 1 yard setting up... (I'm going to sprain my fingers typing what? before this post is done.) A punt after Sanchez can't make the 3rd and 6 work out. 4. Ok this is the kind of drive the Jets should have been trying to establish the entire 1st quarter instead of just on their 4th possession. They run the ball to Thomas Jones 3 times in a row at the start of the drive, give Sanchez a pass attempt (illegal contact on Vontae Davis) and then come right back to a run with Jones up the middle. They give Sanchez another pass attempt now that they have established the run and drawn the safeties up a bit tighter and Sanchez hits Edwards for 25 yards. Then BACK TO THE RUN. This should be the Jets gameplan against everybody this year until they prove they can shut it down. 3 straight runs. 2nd and 5 at the Miami 5 and then they throw 2 passes in a row for some reason (what?) and settle for a FG. The drive was great right up until they decided not to try and push the ball into the endzone on the ground at the end. 5. Jones up the middle for a 11 and a 1st down. Jones for 1 yard and then we pass the ball (well I guess the Jets can pass on 2nd and 9 some of the time and I can't specifically pick the times out when it's not appropriate but Jones has just gone 2 carries for 12 yards and we're going to make Sanchez throw a 2nd and 9 pass before we really have to pass?) Anyway that's the end of that drive so another wasted opportunity. 6. Sanchez incomplete on 1st and 10 (what?) Sanchez sacked on 3rd and 6, end of drive. 7. Jets start at their 40 with 1:55 to go. All the time in the world to run a few plays get better field position and see how things are going. Sanchez lines up in the shotgun on 1st and 10 (what?) and muffs the snap, Jets recover. Sanchez goes incomplete on 2nd and 5 (what?) 3rd and 5 the Jets have to pass now and wind up punting. The first half was a completely wasted opportunity for the Jets primarily because although they could run the ball against the Fins they passed the ball enough to get shut down fairly easily. This was a polar opposite plan from what they did against Oakland. The Jets CS needs to have HE'S A ROOKIE tattooed on Mark Sanchez forehead in flaming red letters so they get that fact reinforced every time he comes back to the sideline this season. Somebody just does not get it on the sidelines and that somebody cost the Jets the game on Sunday.
I'm starting to yearn for Buddy Hackett myself. He wouldn't know anything about football but I bet he'd see that offensive line and Greene and Jones and say "just run the ball baby..."
and he'd utilize play action at one point or another, with a QB who can throw the ball down the field.
Lets get this straight, NO ONE, NO ONE is exempt from criticism on the team, regardless of how long they have been in the job, or reputation. However, this does not mean that people should come in for personal attacks . Westhoff is/has been a great STs coach for many many years and IMO still is, but has he got complacent? Jury is out on that one. We are in the results business and on sunday we did not get the result and Westhoff and team deserve a full blasting. NOT acceptable.
Sure, he is doing a great job as qb coach for JaMarcus Russell. I personally would not want him within 100 feet of Mark Sanchez.
Feely seemed to be the only one other than Wright to want to make the tackle. 3 of our top ST'ers were inactive. that will always get you.
It's actually crazy the way people react to losses. If they reacted this way to other things in life, I think a lot of posters here would be hospitalized, jailed, divorced, unemployed, etc.... Be upset with it, but don't go upsetting the entire applecart because one aspect of the performance was truly poor.
