I doubt he'd want to return with how irrelevant special teams has become.

Kind of echoing the comments Westhoff made about the touchbacks and how irrelevant it has become.

In reality, though, there were no other options. Wideout Jeremy Kerley, their punt returner, has limited experience returning kickoffs. And rookie receiver Devin Smith, though fast, returned just one kickoffs in his final two seasons at Ohio State.

"I'm willing to take recommendations, if you've got one," head coach Todd Bowles joked.

The Jets had Walter Powell, a returner with some experience, on the practice squad until last week, when they waived him to make room for former Patriots wideout Kenbrell Thompkins, who had returned three kickoffs last season for the Raiders.

But elevating Thompkins to the 53-man roster would mean cutting someone else, and the Jets just aren't willing to do that, even though Stacy's average of 21.2 yards on six returns ranks 46th in the league.

"And cut who?" Bowles said, challenging a reporter who had been questioning his decision to use Stacy in the kickoff-return role. "There's a lot of a checks and balances. Which one?"

The reason the kickoff return role isn't a high priority for the Jets is because the league's decision to move the kickoff spot from the 30- to the 35-yard did a lot to de-emphasize it. Now, there are far more touchbacks.

In 2010, the year before the rule change, 23 kickoffs were returned, league-wide, for touchdowns. Last year, there were only six. So far this season, there have been three.

"A lot of balls get kicked in the end zone anyway and kind of eliminate kickoff returns as they go," Bowles said. "If we block better and we come out of the end zone better, we'll get better returns. I'm fine with that."

Strange that he would say they aren't as important. Ask Darren Sproles about that. ST can decide games. Kickoffs have become almost irrelevant, because they always boot it out of the end zone, but everything else is still very important.

Bad play on special teams can still kill you just like bad play anywhere. I think what he was saying was the the KO Return used to be one of the biggest impact plays in the game and now it's usually a TB instead.

Lockett is a total stud WR. He's not just a KR. Unfortunately Bevel might be the lamest O coordinator in the league right now.
