Cutler is due $15.5 Mil next year, add to that the cost of a draft pick and the fact that Cutler has only been able to make it to the post season once in 10 years this would absolutely set the team back. Resign Vick for a lot less than Cutler, it doesn't cost a draft pick and draft a QB.
I was operating under the impression that he would be cut, I didnt read the OP thoroughly enough. I wouldnt trade for him and take on that contract. I should have said under the same conditions I'd prefer Cutler to Vick.
The OP says we should get Cutler which would require a first round pick... Lol some jet fans never dissapoint why not just trade a top 10 pick for Josh McCown?
it wouldn't take anything close to a 1st round pick to get him. and neither would the Jets be interested at that price
I've been calling for Vick's return in 2015 with a draft pick sitting in the wings. The only advantage I see with Cutler, is that he's taken the field almost every week for the majority of his career. With Vick, we'd be gambling that he'd give us at least 11 or 12 healthy starts next year. Would you take the gamble? I think I would.
Anyone who is saying Vick: Do you really think he can remain healthy for the next 20+ games as he reaches the ripe age of 35? Having just Vick and Geno (and maybe a rookie) is not sustainable. If we could get Cutler for a 6th rounder (as Br4d suggests), we would have a Qb better than anyone we've had since Favre. He's not going to be outstanding, but remember when some people wanted to trade for Rivers after his poor season a few years ago? Look how he bounced back. Cutler (an average Qb) would make this team a playoff contender, in my opinion (assuming we re-sign the players we need to and make a few key draft picks). We simply haven't had an average Qb in the entirety of Rex Ryan's Jets' tenure. Though it's true that he's surrounded by talent right now and remains very inconsistent, at least he's young and less of a health risk than Vick. He would be a great player to have as we continue to search for our future franchise Qb through the draft.
Cutler's 31, unless you think he's the long term answer (4-5 years), pass on him. If you're looking to him for 2 years, keep Vick and draft early. I don't think the FO is completely over Geno being the guy.
I really need to qualify what a QB disaster is with this team? I mean, really? I don't remember O'Donnell because I was doing temporary duty in Arab countries at the time and had no access to football, aside from medics giving us NFL updates. I remember small portions of O'Donnell, including him getting his ass smashed by the Cowboys in the Super Bowl, but he means little to me during his time with the Jets. Jay Cutler is an erratic gunslinger that acts aloof and accepts little responsibility for his mistakes, even though he has all the offensive weapons anyone could ask for. Bring that dickhead to our team and you are asking for an avalanche. He's not the QB this team needs. He'd basically set the media vultures on full anger mode. And if you haven't noticed them with Vick, who is saying all the right things while being run through the wringer, let me tell you that this is the exact formula for disaster.
http://overthecap.com/player/jay-cutler/130/ Can the Bears really cut him with that kind of guaranteed money?
No, if Trestman wants to move on they need to have a trade partner to take the $15.5M guarantee for 2015 off their hands. It comes off the cap also in that scenario. Hell, they may be willing to give up a 6th round pick to get somebody to take Cutler's contract by the time February rolls around.
Considering how much money the Bears trading partner has to absorb, maybe they're forced to throw in a 1st or 2nd rounder? That's a crippling salary there.
They'd probably just live with the contract for 2015 at that point if that's what it took. I'm guessing they will be peddling him dirt cheap and seeing what the market brings.
