That throw around the 1 minute mark is impressive considering how far he got the ball downfield without stepping into the throw but also highlights how unpolished he is. There was no reason for that ball to be underthrown. No pressure, bad technique leads to the WR needing to stop and make a tough catch instead of an uncontested TD which it should have been. The play right after that... fantastic arm strength but he had so many opportunities to step up in the pocket and instead ended up about another 5-10 yards past his drop back point. The arm is super impressive but you can see why this guy was the 7th QB drafted in a weak QB class outside of the top 3.
not disagreeing with you. But IIRC the Pats actually carried Brady as a 4th QB for a similar reason (fear of him being snapped up)
I wasn't thrilled with the pick when it happened because i wanted more weapons for Sam at that point of the draft. I'm pleased to see that the reason for the pick was undeveloped talent. I'm a fan of a QB that can throw deep. While I am not hoping to see him play with Sam in front of him, I will be happy to know in a year or two that we might finally have some real insurance at the QB position. Old timers like me have seen far too many Jets seasons crushed once the QB1 got hurt. That said, we still need a vet with many W's in his past as our back-up in 2020. Matt Robinson-guy on these boards will back me up on this ; )
Yes.. That's why I said this kid with the right coaching and commitment can absolutely be special. He might be up there in the Josh Allen class of arm strength but needs work and the right tutor. Since his hero was Farve, why not give him #4 unless its already gone..
Thanks for the video. I agree, he might surprise people. I don't wish anything other than Sam proving he's our FQB, but if that doesn't pan out, I think this guy can step in. He's got two things you can't teach: arm strength and intelligence. I too had hoped this pick would've been for a WR, but given how BB wanted this kid, and other teams were interested, JD had to take him there. And frankly, it's easier to find WR talent as UDFAs or even an unsigned FA or a trade than finding a legit QB. This was a smart move by Douglas.
Douglas playing chess not checkers. Falk was Maccagnan trash. This James kid is all JD. Maybe if Sam gets Mono again we'll have kid under center who won't make the season unwatchable x2 not on JDs watch. Loved it.
How was his college completion percentage? If higher than 55% he's already a better prospect than Josh Allen was coming out of Wyoming lol. If not. They are one in the same. Great arm no accuracy.
Looks like his completion rate improved with his increase in pass attempt. Positive sign and I would imagine the FIU football program had better talent than Bowling Green. Nice to draft a Senior QB for once too...
Morgan has a lot of intriguing ingredients: -Ideal size for position -Elite arm strength -NFL coach in college (Butch Davis) and pro style -Grew up in a football mecca Green Bay -Highly intelligent (wants to go into law after football) -Great leader and lots of support around him -Super tough, played through a significant injury I do think it's interesting that JD took many high ceiling guys, including Morgan.
This kid will have a OL (we hope)..Hackenberg, Petty, or even Darnold for that matter had paper mache.
It's easy to rag on Hackenberg, but that was clearly a case of Macc and Bowles being at odds and he was caught in the middle. This was the absolute worst situaiton he could've landed in - ruined his career. It was a horrible reach for Macc to take him with a #2 pick given how much work he needed, and really the Johnsons should've known then that he was a terrible GM and fired him, but instead they extended him. Thankfully it seems we now have a competent GM.
agree completely. and, we play outside in cold, windy weather at home plus in buffalo and foxborough. both qbs need an arm with zip. popgun arms can be easily rendered useless by a savvy DC, like beane or the hoodie.
he has training camp, and preseason games to do that. and, if sam gets injured, who says he can't be another gardner minshew? if i remember correctly, brady was pick #199 at end of 6th round. anything is possible if he has the smarts and the arm. the rest can be fixed with the right coaching.
