I disagree with him being taken that high but people like Mel Kiper projecting him in the 6th round means nothing. He might have been a bit of a reach but who knows how actual teams ranked him. The Honey Badger was projected to go very late but was picked up in the third I believe.
I don't think that's it at all. Some people defending the pick are arguing that the Jets picked off their own board or something. That's not the issue, the issue people being critical of the pick are pointing out that is that maybe the Jets didn't place the value on the pick correctly. They could have a punter graded as the BPA in the 3rd when everyone knew he wasn't going until the 6th. Does that make it good value to pick them there? No. The issue here is that it comes off as if they didn't grade the pick correctly. We won't know for sure, maybe the next 6 picks after us all wanted this guy. Personally I doubt it as the guy is small and coming off a shoulder injury that put him on the sideline for a year. That seems to be a guy more likely to be a UDFA or at best a late 6th or 7th round pick. The point is that any player in the draft is a gamble to make it in the NFL let alone a small corner who hasn't played in a year. We need corner help right now and a rookie is already going to have a big adjustment problem. By picking a guy who is coming off injury, who is small and who it doesn't seem was ranked highly by any "experts" ahead of a number of other corners or other positions (like WR for example) just doesn't seem like a wise choice. Yes we have 9 more picks but your odds of getting a starting calibre or even just a decent contributor falls the further you get into the draft. The smart play would have been to draft a WR in the 3rd and hope that McDougle fell to you in the 4th. If he doesn't, who cares? There are plenty of other CBs available, bigger, faster ones who actually played last year and you pick one of them with your 4th. Everyone wins. Now we have a smaller, less talented pool of WRs to choose from because we decided to add this guy that is by no means a lock to get a starting role with the team.
He was projected to go in the sixth or seventh round mostly because of his shoulder injury. He has good stats when he's on the field. Could Idzik have waited and selected him later in the draft. He obviously thought he would be selected even though the Jets have three 4th round picks.
I don't know dick about where players are "supposed" to be drafted but I watch this kids highlights and I get excited to see what he can do at the next level. I love the way he plays the ball.
The way this draft is going they're going to troll us all and address every other need before receiver...wouldn't shock me if they picked a couple of backup OL/linebackers for depth/youth, one more corner, maybe a #3 QB.
Bingo. Also, we have no idea the kinds of things Idzik and co. might have been hearing about McDougle. If his stock dropped because of injury and the buzz was that a few other teams saw early round value in the guy, Idzik might not have wanted to risk letting him get away. It's only a "reach" if you know that no other teams were interested.
Everyone complaining is alarmingly stupid. Everyone thought we'd go pass catcher - cb in the first 2 rounds - and we went pass catcher, cb in rounds 2 and 3 with a potential beast safety (also a big need) in the first round. You really think a lineup of Decker - Kerley - Nelson - Amaro won't vastly improve our pass offense? LOL. Also with CJax/Ivory/Powell in the backfield AND Stephen Hill and Ford as our Meachem-like deep threats who just come in and run fly routes. And Cumberland is a solid in-line TE who is improving as a blocker and can catch the ball. Stop being stupid, please. And is this guy a reach? Who the fuck knows. No one knows anything at this point. We all hated the Sheldon pick when it was announced last year.
It doesn't matter what other teams are doing.. It only matters what the Jets are doing. They can not know how high teams have Dex graded, they obviously had him graded out very high. They actually were scared he wouldn't make it to their pick in the third from what I've been reading. So.. Again, just because the media said we could get him in the 6th, doesn't make it true. They don't have complete inside knowledge, they are not the be all end all of the draft. Matter a fact, most of them have no fucking clue. That is not the smart play, if you are that sure about a prospect, y0u draft him. Just like the Jets did.. You don't gamble and HOPE you can get him later, if you feel that good about a player, then you pull the trigger. They made the absolute right move. Your trying to act like the Jets didn't do their due diligence. I am willing to bet that they not only see this kid as a starter in this league, they view him as someone that was a steal in the third round. You are judging a guy based on his measurable aspect to his game, which is unfair. Look around the league, there a tons of examples of heart trumping physical gifts. None of those WR that were left were "locks" to be a starter either, if they were, they would've drafted one by now.
injury prone? he played all of 2011 and all of 2012 and got injured his senior year. its not like a long pattern of missing games to injury
people need to pipe down with the WR stuff.... We took amaro in round 2 and we have like 5 WR's on the roster already. anyone we took in round 3 would have had a hard time making the roster let alone seeing time on the field. we are better off taking a project undrafted or in round 7 and hoping he makes a splash in training camp as opposed to using one on a WR in round 3. if you wanted to go oline or somewhere we have a big need that could be filled, sure... but its not like we were getting mike evans or sammy watkins in the 3rd
it only takes 1 other team being high on the kid for it to ruin your plans... if 28 other teams had him as a 7th rounder, and the jets and 1 other team had him with a 3rd round grade, well, then we needed to take him in the 3rd round. as far as draft grades, im sure it fluctuates dramatically from team to team. and we have already seen experts 1st round grades make it to rounds 3,4,5 before.
Exactly... to completely validate your point... im sure there were other teams who thought they could wait till round 5 or 6 and get McDougle. they would have been wrong
How many of those 5 WR's are really starter quality though? Kerley's a 3 currently masquerading as a 2. Nelson's a 4. Hill's done squadoosh and Ford's mainly here for special teams.
What I'm judging him on is that he has limited tape, missed the majority of his senior year and is coming off a shoulder injury. Now I'm assuming they have done some kind of investigating into the medical side of things but it still could pose a problem heading forward. Many teams are going for bigger corners and he's short. I agree that the media isn't the be all and end all but this isn't a guy rated in the 3rd who went in the 2nd it's a guy rated in the 6th or 7th if not a UDFA who went in the 3rd. That's a huge difference. Maybe the WRs after where we picked McDougle aren't locks to start on most teams but they'd probably be able to beat out some of the junk we have. I agree that Amaro is basically like drafting a WR in the 2nd and I'm okay with that pick. I'm just of the opinion this was a reach and we're going to regret not going WR at this point. I hope I'm wrong and he ends up as a hands down starter in the NFL...right now I don't have high hopes of that being the case.
..and that is fine. You are entitled to your opinion, I just hate when people get caught up in the media drivel. If you watch tape of this kid, he has a lot of potential. I admit I was surprised by the pick, as I'm sure a lot of people were, but once you start to look into it, I felt a lot better about the pick. I trust Idzik & Co. They haven't done anything to lead me to believe I shouldn't trust them up to this point, so I am willing to bet that they think this kid can come in and contribute right away. I don't think they would have wasted a third round pick if they didn't think he could be a legit starter for us. I'm excited to see what this kid can do when healthy. They know that is the biggest knock on this kid and luckily for him, he will come to a place where we have a top tier strength and conditioning program to remedy his injury bug that he had in college. I'm excited. In conclusion, I'm just asking for people to use their own judgement on a prospect and stop being a media drone. It gets old. If you don't like a player because you didn't like what you saw from him in college, then I can respect that.
Watched his Clemson,Old Dominion, and Connecticut cut ups, it seems like Maryland ran a lot of zone. He reads the routes pretty well in zone, doesn't try to be a hero, when Maryland does play man he doesn't press very well at all, mainly plays the trail technique when man is called upon. He plays the ball very well, has very fluid movement and keeps himself in good position in his zone. I don't like the way he tackles, uses his body too much and just bounces off guys at times. I wish he had a little more patience at times in press coverage, he let's the receiver dictate where he goes instead of the opposite. Overall I think he's a good player, I didn't like the scheme that Maryland ran, made it hard to get a good evaluation on him but he's a ballhawk. He needs some work on his hands in press coverage but he's great in zone. He has a high football IQ, he understands that when a screen is thrown to force the receiver inside towards the help. When a QB scrambles he doesn't leave his man, very big plus, he's disciplined in coverage, doesn't initiate contact prematurely when the ball is thrown. I love this pick a lot he needs to stay healthy and learn the playbook though.
