What people don't know is not only Art Briles' system but how he goes about 1. evaluating/recruiting potential QBs and 2. the way he teaches his offense to them. In Briles one-read system, he ironically plays down "reading" playbooks but instead has his QBs focus on "seeing it" with hours of on-field reps and film study with the overall intent to simplify if not eliminate the guesswork for his QBs (i.e. belly dive handoff to the RB or, pulling the ball out of the RB's belly--faking the dive--and passing based on a single read) and with that allowing them to play faster.
Great article. Not sure if its been shared on this thread but here it is: http://mmqb.si.com/mmqb/2016/04/07/christian-hackenberg-penn-state-nfl-draft
I don't love this pick but Mac scouted him personally, chan must have signed off too. The kid looked great under O'Brien who is now the Texans coach and I'm sure Mac had some insight there since he was with the Texans prior. Gruden who is considered a qb guru felt he was a first round talent. All these guys know more football than we do, I'm willing to give him a chance.
Gruden thinks everybody is a first round talent, he hates to say anything bad about anyone..that's ok though.
Interesting the more I read. Was originally pretty down on the pick based on what had fallen so far to the pick. Haha did you read the top comment? Gave me a good laugh. "He looks like someone drew a smiley face on a big toe". Sent from my SM-N910U using Tapatalk
This guy is going to be the real deal. Give him a year or two and all the pessimism will get on broad
Looks more like the left side of the Penn State OLine couldn't stop anybody. The kid had no time to do anything but get blasted from the blindside.
The best line from the article was the coach that said their offensive linemen didn't even know how to hold correctly. I LOL'ed for real on that one.
I agree. His OL was awful. That said, after his freshman year he learned some really bad footwork habits. After researching this kid a bit, my feeling is he's a reclamation project. There's a lot of good here, but he needs to be deprogrammed, then built back up. He's got the head for it, they just need to go through the process.
So Hackenberg's play model was Brady. No surprising considering OBrian was his coach. If Jets passed on his and Pats took him at the end of 2nd, this board would exploded with "Pats got another Brady".
Yup, and @Don would have led the charge talking about how "the Jets had a shot at a franchises QB, look at the Pats took him and I'd say they know a thing or two about QB's"
Although I'm not a big fan of the pick, it felt like all the good O-Lineman were drafted 3-5 picks before our pick and then Macc went BPA right after that. I think they would have taken an O-Lineman had there been one available they liked. Rebounded in the 3rd round with a solid pick. Hopefully this means Geno is gone.
Ok I've calmed down. Big ass dude, huge arm, gotta give Mac his due if this pick turns out to be THE man. He's someone I could truly root for. Gailey is going to fix him and hopefully he'll fulfill the promise he started out with at Penn State. Welcome to the Jets Hack. Now let's get to work!! _
