Welcome to the Jets Calvin Pryor

There is a poll on the Gang Green main site that has approval rating of the Pryor pick at about 87% so it sounds like the vast majority (almost 9 out of 10) people like the pick. Doesn't necessarily mean anything but I bet the numbers were far, far lower for Milliner and Richardson last year.

 

I agree Cooks was a better choice than Pryor and so do most draft experts on TV today. I also think the jets could have moved down about 3-5 slots and still got Pryor. That being said, Pryor does fill a need for the jets. It's not like they passed on Sapp and took Kyle Brady. But I think the jets will eventually regret passing on Cooks, although people on this board still think whatever Rex touches is gold.

 

Good post man. Especially about the FEAR. We haven't had a dude like that since Laron Landry. It could very well improve the secondary better than a corner would. If you think about it, the best 2 years we've had in the secondary under Rex both had premier safeties. 2009 we were #1 with Revis & Rhodes doing most of the work. In 2012 we were 2nd without Revis, with Cro & Landry. I like the idea of having 1 good corner and 1 good safety as opposed to 2 very good corners, and weak safety unit. I think it makes much more sense. Cro & Landry were a better duo than Cro & Revis. Think about it.

 

I'm almost positive Arizona was going to take Pryor at #20. You notice that they traded out of #20 to #26 and selected a safety? Pretty sure we ruined their plan.

Had we traded down 3-5 spots, we'd have lost out on the guy the Jets brass wanted.

Well I totally don't agree this was pure BPA. Some around here have a fetish of insisting that Idzik does everything BPA. I don't know where that comes from. Has he claimed to be guided purely by BPA? If so I missed that. And quite obviously you have no inside info that Rex was not happy with the Pryor pick. Rex needed help in the secondary, Fuller and Gilbert were gone. He may or may not have preferred Dennard, but one should hardly conclude Rex was not supportive of this decision. They pretty much had to go secondary.

And I did think my seeing an implication that Rex wanted to trade up in your previous post was a fair observation.

 

Sounds reasonable. From what I hear they likely had Pryor higher and got their second choice. Remember Arizona added Cromartie to their secondary (heh). I could have seen them going Qb, grooming someone to ake over in two or three from Palmer, and they may still do that down the draft. But safety was a logical pick for them. So yes, the Jets likely would not have gotten Pryor if they had traded down.

 

Nice catch. With all the Manziel coverage, I totally forgot about this. Hopefully, tonight there will be more focus on prospects and not some BS storyline.

 

Personally I see the Jets as having to face a division loaded with offensive talent. I understand the natural desire for the team to exhibit balance in its construction, but when the strength of all three of our primary opponents is offense, I don't see anything wrong with going the completely opposite direction and building a truly dominating defense. The Jets defense is the strength of the team, but it is NOT dominant. Seattle's defense was dominant, and they crushed one of the greatest offenses of all time in Denver in the Super Bowl.

Pryor brings the Jets D one step closer towards dominance. He also brings talent to the safety position which is something Rex has not had since he took over as head coach of the Jets (I don't count Sherry Rhodes as talent due to his unwillingness to adapt to his new coach). Three hallmarks of the Ravens defense when Rex was there was Ngata, Suggs, and Reed. The only player the Jets have had that came close to any of them under Rex was Kris Jenkins, and obviously Jenkins career came to an end with his injuries. I don't believe Calvin Pryor will become Ed Reed but I do believe he'll provide a new threat at the position that the Jets have not had recently.

To my above point, I'd be perfectly happy if the Jets continued drafting defense. Get a pass rusher, get a starting caliber corner. Don't dictate draft decisions based on the fact that the balance of the roster favors the defense.

 

Dude I hear what you are saying. And it is with difficulty that a anti-FO Homer such as myself says what I am about to say. But Rex and Idzik have seen him, so there's that. Rex has his issues, but he's a good evaluator of defensive talent.

Mostly I like it though because the Jets needed help in the secondary. I would have preferred a corner, but two of the top three Cb's were already gone at 18, and I can't say Dennard is better than Pryor.

 

Yup. Either you have it or you don't. He doesn't have it.

That doesn't mean he's good; it just means our front office is stupid.

Succeed? No. Not be in the bottom 5 of statistical QBs? Yes. I've seen that show before (Sanchez); no thanks on waiting another five years before acknowledging reality.

 

If anyone had any doubt Idzik was going to pick the best player left on his board they haven't been paying attention. He knows how he wants to build the team. This pick was in the bank weeks ago. If someone had taken him earlier he would have gone to the next highest pick. Very predictable.

 

Dee Milliner will be very happy to have a hard hitting safety to have his back and help generate TOs. It's time to strike more fear into the heart of receivers and TEs that want to go deep - they will see Pryor and think differently.

Tight ends like Scott Chandler roamed free down the middle of the field - it's time to change that.

I can say Pryor is better then Dennard, he def is.

 

I feel u but look at our roster. Got a stud wideout for 5 yrs, 3 good RBs , possibly our QB of the future , a d-line that can potentially be historically great, and now building a young but good secondary .. Ur right tho games have to be won n playoffs have to be made

 

I hope Pryor is the enforcer we need patrolling the middle of our defense.
Instilling a swagger to the whole secondary ... Capable of making plays that lifts the whole team.

Was amazing to see so many DBs go in the 1st round.
Glad to see the Jets ahead of the curve.
They get their pick of the best safeties and now will probably still get an impact passing target in round 2.

Really liking the trend of staying at our pick and grabbing value at the spot. ( very satisfying )
Getting bargains, as opposed to moving up in drafts and paying retail prices.

Welcome Calvin Pryor ! anticipate him being a fan favorite for years.

 

seems like a pretty good prospect who can help this secondary, so I'm on board!

will be interesting to see how quickly he adapts to the NFL. it's a lot faster, so he'll need to adjust his timing and some of those aggressive angles.
think the best case scenario is that he can handle single high safety in 2014.
In that event, i leave Landry out on the field to play SS and to call the D.
Landry will be only guy in secondary with any substantial experience in this D. Even better if Pryor can pick up both positions, and him and Landry can be used interchangeably depending on situation. might be a bit much to ask from a rook right away, but the long term potential of this pick is certainly there.

Welcome on. I think Pryor will be a fun guy for us fans to root for.
He'll play like a Jet.

 

They want him to quarterback the defense so he will have to be able to do a lot AND more.

 

When or where did I imply that you wanted for Rex to trade up? Or that Rex was unhappy with the pick? Or even why do you think that my first thread was in response to one of your inputs? My response was to those that thought Idzik caved in to Rex's request. That in my view is dead wrong. Idzik stuck to his guns and his board and made the choice, a choice that might or might not have been Rex's first choice.
As for BPA I said it many times before, BPA does not mean ignoring teams needs, in fact that is part of the weighing criteria. But I don't think, and he said that himself, that he would skip over one bracket or grade of talent to the next just because there is a need.
May be I did not make myself very clear.

 

I'm with you on that man. I really really like the pick, borderline love it. Shores up a position that we have long been just tinkering with. As long as he doesn't end up getting a pile of penalties and or suspensions with the way the league is going I think he'll be a great asset to the team.
